SEVEN IN A ROW BABY!!!

If you need me, I'll be senselessly rooting for Sizemore 40/40 for the remainder of 2008.

So, what inning does Wedge pinch hit for Marte tonight? Set the over/under for the 6th. I take the over.

by obobcatu on Aug 24, 2008 7:41 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Carroll and Dellucci batting 2-3. I wish it were Shoppach and Choo. Or anybody else, really.

We get the Dodgers/Phillies game here, alas.

Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

Maybe he gets no ABs tonight. Wedge gives no breaks.

Error on Marte per Gameday, what’d he do?

Misplayed a simple grounder hit right at him. Little Leaguers make that play.

Wedge likes it. A reason to pull him.

Yay for talking up Shoppach. Let Vmart play 1b and give Garko the Marte treatment.

by obobcatu on Aug 24, 2008 8:34 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

what’s the scouting report on Garko’s dominoes game?

by APV on Aug 24, 2008 8:35 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Manning and Underpants are saying that Shoppach has played himself into a starting role and that it would be unfair to him (at this point in his career) if the FO made him go back to being a back-up C. Manning also took a passive aggressive shot at Garko, which was nice.

by obobcatu on Aug 24, 2008 8:38 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

…then Shoppach chose door number 2 (SO).

ahh…to be in Prague. Two absinthes!

How to tell if it’s real absinthe: If you could afford it, it’s not real.

I go with the….if you can still focus on a point on the opposite wall after two of them, it’s not real absinthe

by APV on Aug 24, 2008 8:47 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Absinthe: Don’t believe the hype.

Absinthe is the NYY/BOS AA Prospect of liquor.

If you need me, I'll be senselessly rooting for Sizemore 40/40 for the remainder of 2008.

by gte619n on Aug 24, 2008 8:47 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They’re selling extremely watered down absinthe in the states now. Coming soon to a lame bar near you.

by PatBordersHelmet on Aug 24, 2008 8:47 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The same guys who buy the Heinekens will buy the diluted absinthe.

by obobcatu on Aug 24, 2008 8:48 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And they will be “totally wasted” and braging loudly the next day at brunch table next to you. You’ll pretend not to be listening, but you will be amused/annoyed by every word.

by PatBordersHelmet on Aug 24, 2008 8:50 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I know. It tastes like Sambuca mixed with Listerine. At least the European fake stuff is still a very strong liquor. Anyone ever hear the Mitch Hedburg routine about absinthe?…a real classic.

by APV on Aug 24, 2008 8:49 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he talks about drinking absinthe and how he wanted to trip but instead just got really drunk. so he was kind of “forced to trip”, “why is the ground as low as I can go”. He then segued into this link

by APV on Aug 24, 2008 8:55 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Next time you drink absinthe you should pour out a tiny bit for Mitch. But just a tiny bit, that stuff is expensive.

by PatBordersHelmet on Aug 24, 2008 9:01 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Mitch Hedburg would not condone that form of remembrance.

by fleerdon on Aug 24, 2008 9:02 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

instead I’ll drink it in the Eastern European way, carmelizing a little bit of sugar dipped in absinthe before dipping it into a shot and draining it. I’ll consider the act of liquifying a crystaline structure in a spoon with a lighter sufficient tribute to Mitch.

by APV on Aug 24, 2008 9:03 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So you are gonna Smoke Laird! Nice!

An STO commercial leading into the game: “Tuesday night on STO-HD, David Dellucci swings his hot bat in Detroit as the Indians take on the Tigers.” Two things:

1) Has the season really come to this? and
2) If the commercial had featured Sal Fasano, with that wording, there is a chance this board would implode.

by Fundamentals on Aug 24, 2008 8:41 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And this coincides with the team’s longest winning streak of the season. 2008 is the bizarro season.

As long as Texas gets an equivalent amount. We can’t have any one team receiving more of the runs than any other team after all. Perhaps we can form a commission (us in charge of course) mandating who gets a hit, where that hit goes, and how often people get hits, thereby ensuring an adequate amount of runs for all?

So with some quick math it seems if Shoppach played every game this season he would be 2nd in the AL in strikeouts, behind only Jack Cust. He has 97 right now, but would have 144(.37) if he played in all 128 games.

Relating to the discussion above, of the Sowers/Laffey/Jackson/Lewis/Huff group, I think the ones to be most excited about have yet to see any MLB service time.

From thewoot blog…Top Ten Things to Look for at the Olympic Closing Ceremonies

   1. 200,000 pizzas sent to "Chinese Taipei"
   2. Ceremonial lighting of the Tibetan monk
   3. Entire crowd replaced by more photogenic stand-ins
   4. New technology allows the “completely live” fireworks display to run backward
   5. Everyone looks under their seat to find a gift bag containing a DVD copy of Watchmen, one of those cans of Coke in a different language, and a female child
   6. Numerous mistakes by Chinese dancers (but no points deducted by judges)
   7. Bela Karolyi given Andy Rooney’s old spot on 60 Minutes
   8. One more silver medal awarded to Shawn Johnson, just to rub it in
   9. Olympic hostesses return to their docking stations and power down
  10. Everyone leaves satisfied but then somehow want another Olympics about fifteen minutes later

Because ERA, like a lot of stats, doesn’t tell as much as it seems.

Steel Nick

by nickjs21 on Aug 24, 2008 10:22 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

from Hardball Times:

“Fielding Independent Pitching, a measure of all those things for which a pitcher is specifically responsible. The formula is (HR*13+(BB+HBP-IBB)*3-K*2)/IP, plus a league-specific factor (usually around 3.2) to round out the number to an equivalent ERA number. FIP helps you understand how well a pitcher pitched, regardless of how well his fielders fielded. FIP was invented by Tangotiger.”

by APV on Aug 24, 2008 10:24 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The numbers they choose to multiply by seem arbitrary, as well as the final number that is added on. I’m sure the better pitchers will have a better FIP, but I doubt that the statistic can be used as a definitive indication of how good a pitcher actually is, though I’m sure there are other stats that can do that more accurately. It’s interesting nonetheless.

by obobcatu on Aug 24, 2008 10:29 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It’s pretty good. I can’t off the top of my head defend that as un-arbitrary, but you can pretty solidly trust the work of Tangotiger and the people who vouch for him (THT among others).

Lookout Landing has really champions tRA, which seems nice.
