6-man rotation in September?
The PD is saying Laffey may join our current 5 SPs in a six-man rotation.
I guess they like what they are seeing from Reyes (I know I am) and Z-Jaxx.

Whatever it takes to stretch this 9-game win streak into a 39-game win streak.
I wonder if Cliff’s Cy credentials will have any bearing on this. It seems like he’s got a good lead on it, but a switch to a 6-man rotation could cost him a start or two at the end of the year.

it could be an unbalanced rotation, where certain guys stay on their normal rest.

Maybe we can do like spring training — half a game for each starter, thereby eliminating the danger of having to watch Rincon or Mujica!!

LEE FOR 5 THEN CARMONA FOR 4. WE’LL BE UNSTOPPABLE. ROCKIES, HERE WE COME.
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

I highly doubt missing one or two starts will hurt Lee’s Cy Young chances as long as he keeps pitching like he has been. Even if he ends up something like 21-5 (which would mean he’s 2-3 the rest of the way), as long as his ERA is leading the league (or in the top 3) then he’s going to win the award. He already has lots of wins so he doesn’t need more starts to try to add to his total.

It might help Cliff next year to pitch less now. Rotoauthority has concerns he will pitch too many innings over last years total:
“The other risk factor is that he pitched 145.3 innings in ‘07 and should top 225 this year. Lee is 30 years old and he’s topped 200 innings in the past. Still, 80 innings is a notable increase for any pitcher in my opinion.”

i’d be all for keeping his totals down – same as i’m glad carmona got some time off this year.

You know who writes Rotoauthority? The same guy who writes MLB Trade Rumors. I hear they may have done something wrong.
And that whole innings increase thing is only significant in youngsters in the injury nexus, if I recall correctly. Lee’s a big boy. It’s the pitches that matter.

The Milwaukee faithful dubbed him “Zachson”, which works for me.

I am British and really shouldn’t mock and I know it’s not baseball or Indians-related in anyway, shape, or form, but when they released that logo over here they spent days trying to justify its ghastliness, this is now summed up on their website very un-pithily. Follow the link if you’re still reading at this point (and interested obviously):

Far from it. It adheres to a common sentence, paragraph structure. Like, you know, English.

The design expert Michael Beirut—who’s a former Clevelander and Tribe fan—has brought this subject up a number of times on his radio appearances. I kind of like it just because of its uniqueness / ghastliness. My biggest concern is that while it’s ‘cutting edge’ design at this moment, 2012 is far enough away that the early-90s revival will have come and gone and they will have missed the mark.

Is it supposed to look someone barfed out his bangers and mash?
by JulioBernazard on Aug 28, 2008 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The barf cost a million dollars or something, I do not that much, but the contract includes not just the logo but multi-media barf and all other kinds of barf-branding.

I like what I’m seeing from Z-JAX a lot more than Reyes. Remember when we (justifiably) thought he’d be Sowers lite? I wish Sowers was this good.
by Joe. on Aug 27, 2008 5:44 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
do you think jackson is more adjustment proof than reyes?
by Brick. on Aug 27, 2008 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The way they’re pitching now? Oh definitely. Although it’s important not to forget that stuff wise Reyes has Jackson beat by a long shot.
by Joe. on Aug 27, 2008 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i keep wanting to view jackson as a bullpen guy. for no particular reason. i think he’s better suited as a starter, but i think he could be used in a pen, too if we run out of room in the rotation. i have a feeling, though that he’d be either awesome or horrible depending on the day in the pen – not enough time to level things out in 1 or 2 innings. ramble over.

I direct you to the first reply on cleveland.com to the story:
Gee….let me think…..Laffey gets lit up at Triple A and it’s a good idea to bring him on up…..Yea things are going too good right now (9 Game win streak)…Wedge & Shapiro need to try something to mess it up……16 Hits in 5.2 Innings and we already have 5 pitchers doing well – let’s screw it up! Great thinking Eric and Mark….You IDIOTS!!!!!!

Maybe he meant 61 hits in 56.2 IP. FWIW, Laffey hasn’t been pwning noobs in AAA, but maybe he’ll just go Samardzija on the tribe and become ridiculously dominant.
by joeee on Aug 28, 2008 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not knowing a thing about Samardzija might not help me here, but do you really think so? 07-08 he’s struck out 144 and walked 46 in 182 innings. 08 in the majors he struck out 43 and walked 31 in 93.2. I know it was his first stab at that level, but it doesn’t seem that promising and doesn’t compare that well to his promotion from Akron last year.

I’m pretty sure Samardzija is a hard thrower. Laffey just needs to worry about the ground balls. Strikeouts are just gravy.

Samardzjia? He’s a good Catholic boy. What more do need to know?
And oh yes, he throws hard. He’s a still a project.

Aha. Thanking you kindly. I assume we’re considering taking out a subscription to provide Young Aaron with some biscuits?
But more seriously it’s not his lack of K’s that concerns me, it’s that fact that my brief and inexpert look at his mior league stats for 07-08 suggests that he struck out batters at a reasonable rate and that this was a decent part of why he got to Cleveland. To then turn out and not strike out hitters at anywhere near the same rate and to have his walks go up suggests he might be overmatched.
But hey-ho, the lad’s young and I’m probably being rather harsh.

Rasen, dude, the Yanks are having you on here a bit.
Before taking up baseball full time Samardzija was better known as a Notre Dame University footballer – the real kind with helmets and such – here in the States. He gave yeoman service to the Fighting Irish – that’s the ND teams nickname, don’t you know – last year before deciding to play baseball for the Chicago Cubs – Chicago being right down the road, in US terms anyway, from Notre Dame.
Anyway, the boy throw smoke.
Pip, pip and keep a stiff upper lip ol’ chap and don’t let the Yanks grind you down.

I’d heard of the Fighting Irish nickname – too much time spent watching West Wing boxed set I’m afraid.
Thanks for the headsup mauichuck. Decent of you. And don’t fear about the leg pulling, my day will come. Or possibly not…

Don’t we need to keep Laffey down until around Sep 9th to guarantee he’s not a Super 2? I assume they don’t try it until then unless they’re reasonably sure he’ll spend at least a week or so down in 2009.

Man, if this screws up my one chance to see Cliff pitch on Monday (I noticed the pitcher was now "TBD"), I’m gonna be steamed.
