Not a setback but stalled.
Whatever.

This is a fun quote:
Soloff said the soreness is the result of Hafner adding game activity to his rehab schedule.
Well thank god it’s only that! It sounded serious for a second!
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Have you been tracking this story? Hafner’s shoulder evaporated, and the Indians have been regrowing it hydroponically. Or something. We’re not really sure.
You planning on sticking around after we take Brantley? You seem to like it here.

Martinez “in low gear.”
Barfield “applying parking brake.”
Miller “on cinder blocks.”

I am so over Proon now. I would rather have one of our fourth OF’ers or Shoppach DH next year. Just do a rotating DH with our bench players.
I too am largely unconcerned about Hafner. I believe that the offense will make huge strides this year and next with or without him. The health of Choo, the emergence of Shoppach, the acquisition of
Laporta, the improvement in Sizemore, the overall quality of the outfield, the Peralta power surge, the tentative resurfacing of Gutz and Garko and ’Droobs (who will soon be followed by Martinez) all make Hafner pretty forgettable.
Shoot, just having Choo back is more significant that I had ever imagined.
When things were at their worst this season, I don’t recall any of us saying, “man, if only we had Hafner back”. It’s more like, “man, I wish our bullpen didn’t blow.” Or, “man, we really need Martinez back and some of these other guys ’better start hitting.”
I am still a big fan of platooning, and I think that what Toxicadam posted in another thread about the future looking a lot more like an amalgam of Ben Francisco-types is spot on. Platoons work best, I think, when we’re able to make in-game substitutions and rotate PAs in and out of the DH spot. If Hafner is anything less than a slightly-above average hitter in that spot, then we’re better off without him.
(1) I think the jury is still out on the resurfacing of Gutierrez, Garko and Asdrubal.
(2) As we learned in 2008, it’s not always wise to count on continued improvement. So maybe Shoppach isn’t going to be as good in 2009.
(3) Even after posting insane offensive numbers for the past 20 games, Tribe is tenth in RS, with 646 runs. The MLB average is 614.
quality of OF is still below contender level, and if we have to have Francisco, Choo AND Gutz playing everyday because one of them is rotating in at DH, well, that’s not good. I’d really only want one of them playing at a time. The answer certainly has to do with LaPorta and hopefully has to do with a off season ML acquisition.
THE FANS WILL NEVER STAND FOR DH BY COMMITTEE

Also, when the injury went down I cynically believed it was a false injury designed to get him in Buffalo for a while. Turns out it’s very real.
Also, is there a good word for “feigning injury for convenience”? I can’t think of any at the moment. The Germans undoubtedly have a very good word for this concept.
Winner, winner! Chicken dinner!
(Watched 21 the other night. What an awful movie.)

Someone told me they had an MGMT song in the movie, which is neat. I still have no plans of seeing it.
Steel Nick
On that note, Tigers have socred 669 runs so far this season. They only have to average 11.4 runs a game over the rest of the season to hit the 1000 run mark.
