The Tampa Bay GM calls, and asks you if you’d like to trade these entire lineups. We say no sizemore. He says no Longoria.

Fine then, he says.

Do you do it?

do we get Garza and Shields for Ginter and Byrd?

Yes.

Ginter, Byrd, and $100 million dollars. Cash.

So far, Garza looks a bit off. Assuming we can string a couple of hits together, we can take this game.

Here’s hoping Cliff’s got it goin’ on tonight.

The announcers (Hamilton and Hegan) somewhat speculated that maybe he lost it for a bit in the lights – not sure. I didn’t see the actual play to say for sure. The announcers did mention that they think it’s easier to see the ball in the Tropicana roof than the Metrodome roof (probably because the Metrodome roof is white – how ridiculous is that? :-)

Thanks for the update SanD – great news!

That’s interesting – Fielder shoved Manny Parra in the dugout in the MIL-CIN game, a game the Brewers lost. Fielder had to be restrained – further evidence that Fielder may be gone from Milwaukee sooner rather than later (being that Fielder is up for FA much sooner than Parra, who looks like a promising pitcher).

Hate to say it, but Marte needs to get hot now in order to stick around next season.

by Ryan on Aug 4, 2008 10:04 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ok, suppose Marte (likely) is not the 3b option for next season. Ruling out any resigning of The Bearded One, who is the ‘09 3b? To my knowledge we have no satisfactory replacement within the organization who is prepared for next season, which leaves it up to free agency to find someone. Which 3b’s are going into FA next year and could possibly fit the Tribe’s budget? Any ideas? Because if Marte is actually out of the picture I have no clue who will be the 3b, and I hope we don’t sign some Aaron Boone-like stopgap player.

by westbrook on Aug 4, 2008 10:10 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

How seriously do you think the FO would consider moving Peralta to 3b? We could probably find a decent 2b to fill that hole with Droobal moving to SS. Some have suggested the O-Dog. I like Hudson and think he could be a great fit for this team, and since we will have plenty of spending money it could work out, so long as Jhonny can actually play 3b.

by obobcatu on Aug 4, 2008 10:16 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hello obobcatu,

I’ve heard several speculate that Peralta could be moving to 3B in the relatively near future, possibly as soon as next year, with Cabrera moving to SS. Of course, either Barfield or someone like Hudson, would have to step into the 2B hole left by Cabrera.

But I think that is a possiblity if Marte doesn’t start showing some consistency, and I agree with Ryan, Marte needs to make a positive statement now, not just for a game or two, but for the better part of the next two months, or otherwise, his career with the Tribe is likely over.

Just my 2 cents.

by Fire Slider on Aug 4, 2008 10:16 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hello Ryan,

And I’m guessing they’l have to offer him a multi-year deal (2 years + an option, maybe even 3 years) to get him to resign with us?

And, we’ll lose two draft picks on top of it?! I like Blake, but a multi-year deal and losing two draft picks to have him back here for next year doesn’t sound like a great idea to me, no offense.

Just my 2 cents.

The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.

by indiansfan on Aug 4, 2008 10:39 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I hope you’re right. The way everyone has been talking about Blake as if he were Mike Schmidt will, I hope, price him out of Cleveland. The Dodgers’ trade of LaRoche could also suggest they will sign Casey. It would be a blow to have him back in Cleveland next year.

by odradek on Aug 4, 2008 10:46 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hello odradek,

Thinking about it more, technically, we’d only lose one of our draft picks (our second-rounder, I believe, if I remember the new rules correctly); the other pick would be a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds (I think), a pick we never would have had, so technically, we wouldn’t lose that pick, just the second-rounder (unless we finish in the Top 15 records in baseball, but that seems pretty unlikely at this point), but the Dodgers would gain two extra picks.

Sorry about any earlier confusion – hopefully, that clears things up. :-)

by Fire Slider on Aug 4, 2008 10:10 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No offense, but in the “old days,” Perez very rarely blew the lead – it’s been more common this year, but hardly the case in 2007. Often, Perez would hold the tie 5-5, then JoeBlow would come in, and often, “blow” it or come darn close to doing so.

Hello Fire Slider,

Sorry about that – June is already “old days” to you, huh? :-)

With this disappointing season, I can see how “old days” could be June; I just thought you meant further in the past than that.

1 more…

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

15 pitches = 6 outs for Perez. Very nice.

Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

DP Dellucci: “I just swung as hard as I could.” Nice.

I'll regress to my career numbers if you do too!

Scott Lewis tonight: 5.1 innings, 0R, 2BB, 10K

He’s ready for Buffalo.

Laffey tonight: 6 IP, 4R, 3BB, 7H, 4Ks. Sigh.

Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

First start with his new mechanics. Patience.

by xrickx on Aug 4, 2008 10:27 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He needs time to get back into the flow – that’s only been his 6th start, and probably his 2nd worst, with 4 solid to good ones, one “meh” outing (tonight) and one poor outing (his second start – 5.0 IP/11 H/6 ER/1 BB/2 K vs. Richmond (ATL)).

The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.

Something else to keep in mind about Laffey – he’s only 23-YO, one year (baseball-wise; really about 6 months actual age) younger than Adam Miller, so if he needs a little time to find himself, he has that time to do it. Now, hopefully, he can do it, though perhaps he too is a little “gassed” from last season – he did throw over 180 IP last season (that’s even before you consider his postseason outings, which didn’t add that much more, granted, but he did make at least one outing, if not more than that).

Before 2007, he threw 153.2 IP in 2006, and that was the first time he was over 150 IP, having gone 147.1 IP in 2005, so that roughly 30 IP jump from 2006 to 2007 could be having an effect on his stamina and ability to finish as we progress through this season. I know Laffey has said “he hasn’t felt right” regarding his mechanics – perhaps fatigue may have something to do with that.

Just my 2 cents and something to consider.

The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.

I agree – his K rate is going up, which is nice. I’d like to see him get some AAA time this year and see if perhaps he could maybe factor into the back-end of the rotation either out of ST or early on next year. At the very least, be quality starting depth early next season, since the back-end of the rotation is likely going to be filled with guys whose track records are a bit mixed and/or limited (Laffey, Sowers, Huff, Lewis, maybe Miller and Lofgren, etc.)

Just my 2 cents.

The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
