Cleveland Indians at Toronto Blue Jays, Aug 9, 2008 1:07 PM EDT
Cleveland at Toronto, 1:07 PM (STO)
Another showcase start for Paul Byrd; he's already cleared waivers, and the Indians generally have paid the salaries of pending free agents in order to get deals done, so all that remains to be done is getting enough back for him.

with a day-night DH next Saturday, it’s time to think about who is in line for a spot start:
Bullington, Jackson, Laffey.
If Byrd is traded, another starter will be needed.
It’s weird that Toronto keeps taking our AAAA guys that couldn’t stick on the big club. Inglitt, Johnnie Mac, Tallett. I look forward to seeing Garko in a Jays jersey.
Do they have anybody in their FO that used to work for us?
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
Again, this is why I can not like Choo.

Blue Jays’ announcers can’t get enough of the fact that Wedge pushed Lee back a day to avoid the Lee-Halladay matchup.
But Ryan, Cliff Lee has two more wins than Halladay. And Cliff has only two losses, compared to eight for Halladay. Not only is he a winner, but he’s not a loser either. And that’s clutch. Debate over.
/Joe Morgan gets to do THAT for a living.
Yea, Byrd’s up in the zone today. Not cool. With Ian Kennedy getting bombed yesterday and the Mets one-pitcher short, it would have been a great day for a knockout performance. There’s still hope.
Forgot to bring it up, but my favorite quote in a while, per Carl Willis in all the pre-game, post-callup talk on Anthony Reyes….
“He’s a very competitive kid who competes well.”
Oh. Now I get it.
it says when i signed up for gameday audio that i can choose the feed, does anyone know how to do that so i don’t have to listen to the jays broadcaster?
Blue Jays’ announcer: “Indians, I think, are one of the best teams at fouling off tough-pitchers’ pitches. It all starts with Grady Sizemore.”
1) He doesn’t watch a Cleveland game aside from the few they play against the Jays each year.
2) No.

Hypothetically, if Byrd pitches like this for the rest of the year, how much $ would he get as a FA?
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
(because I’d take this Paul Byrd in our 09 rotation)

The Jays look worse than our team. Errors, almost running into each other, total lack of emotion. Cito Gaston is doing well.
OT: CC’s ERA is now 3.11, ten points lower than last year despite the 13.50 start. If he had been traded a little sooner, we could be looking a Sutcliffe-style Cy Young.
I was thinking, what if C.C. went like, 14-0 with a sub 2 ERA in MIlwaukee. Could he win it?
Also, even though it won’t happen, what if Ziegler goes all year and 70 innings without giving up a run? Not that his peripherals are dominant, but how do you compare 70 scoreless innings to a starter’s workload?
A lot of it is based on the opposition. There are some pretty good Cy Young candidates in the NL this year. Sutcliffe was unanimous, with a rookie finishing second and a reliever third.
1 Rick Sutcliffe TOT 24 120 120 1.00 | 16-1 150 2.69 1.08 155
2 Dwight Gooden NYM 0 45 120 0.38 | 17-9 218 2.60 1.07 276
3 Bruce Sutter STL 0 33 120 0.28 | 5-7 123 1.54 1.08 77 45
4 Joaquin Andujar STL 0 12 120 0.10 | 20-14 261 3.34 1.10 147
5 Rich Gossage SDP 0 3 120 0.02 | 10-6 102 2.90 1.08 84 25
6 Mario Soto CIN 0 2 120 0.02 | 18-7 237 3.53 1.13 185
Based on those numbers, a pretty strong case could be made for Gooden. But I think the story of Sutcliffe coming over and leading the Cubs to a championship was too powerful to overcome. CC, on the other hand, is up against the Cub mystique.
The award is supposed to be based on league performance only. Note Sutcliffe’s stats above.
But something has changed. I notice CC’s stats in leaderboards and boxscores are always combined. It used to be when a player changed leagues, stats were listed for that league only.
I’m unaware of any official criteria for the award.
I think NL voters are entitled or at least permitted to consider performance outside of NL games.
I think C.C. will in fact win it if he wins at least 11 and loses no more than 1, while keeping his ERA under 2.30. The voters first and foremost love a good story, and the history is that they take all the remotely credible honorees and then vote for the one who had the most interesting season.

I did a search to see if there is an official list of criteria, but haven’t found it. I did learn something, though. Why is it the Cy Young award? Because he died in 1955 and the award was established in his honor.
Ultimately, the writers make up their own rules. I’m sure there is nothing written down that says manager of the year goes to the manager of the team that most exceeded pre-season expectations, but there it is. And there are ongoing debates about what MVP means, or whether Japanese veterans should get ROY. So they’ll do what they want to do.
I have to think that with Webb a lock to win 20, and possibly several others, that the W-L obsessed voters won’t pass them over for a half-season performance. Unless CC is undefeated, then I couldn’t even guess.
I can’t wait to go home and read a Jays fan gamethread. Those are always hilarious when Byrd shuts someone down.
just checked: they have ONE poster, who only uses the subject line.
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
Why did not anybody claim Byrd? At least keep him from your rivals. Is there a limited amount of claims one can make?
It was probably because they didn’t want to eat the salary. But still, we’re talking about both New York teams needing pitching, and aren’t exactly stingy with the cash.
You have to find room on your roster for him, too — otherwise, he ends up right back on waivers, possibly claimed by a rival, or released a free agent, which would be worse.

Forgot, there’s also a limit as to how many claims a team can put in each day (or week or something), and literally hundreds of players get put on waivers in the first few days of August.

Wow. Jays plan of attack today was to be aggressive early in the count. It hasn’t worked. Byrd really is going to get the chance to close this thing out.
He’s at 80 pitches. On one hand, I want to see him close it out for style point. On the other, I don’t want to have him blow it. It’s gone too well.
Wish I could have watched this start instead of just listening.
Byrd now with a 1.85 ERA in his last five starts. You have to wonder what happens to his trade value if he can finish a complete game in 90 pitches.
If it were Beane and not Shapiro, he’d be calling his manager and ordering him to remove Byrd for the 9th. He’s run up a ton of trade value, why risk a horrible 9th?
Purely out of boredom, I just clicked the video link on MLB.tv.
And it worked. I am seeing the game — no blackout.
Not sure how to explain this.
I’m kind of, like … sssshhhh … not sure what the deal is.

The window used to be, any game starting before 7 EST. The game is not in EI.

I think this is the first 1 PM Saturday game the Indians have played this year. So maybe it was just the 4 pm games
I don’t think so. The blackout rules have never diverged for EI vs. mlb.tv before.

And one of his most unexpected.
(Yes other teams, he always pitches like this)
Wedge: [letting go of Casey's hand] I'll never let go, Casey. I promise.
You know, I used to be quick to emphasize that Francisco is far from a premium defender … but you have to respect a guy who is gunning for the “outfield assists” title despite only starting 74 out of 115 games.
The major league leader is Markakis, with 12 in 1006 innings. Francisco has 11 in 634 innings.
Trying to recall Law’s article. Based o Byrd’s hot streak, what’s the projected latest on the draft pick compensation. I’m guessing something like 40% shot at a Type B and still way less than 5% he’s be Type A?
woah…wasn’t the point of Law’s article that he very well might not even be a Type B free agent? While he may have improved his chances at that, I’m pretty sure he still has 0% chance of being a Type A free agent.
by APV on Aug 9, 2008 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Well yeah… I think we’re saying the same thing. I assume his chance of being Type A are literally microscopic so as to not even worry about…. but since I wasn’t sure, I wrote “way less than 5%”.
It’s the Type B thing I’m uncertain of… I mean a supplemental pick between the 1st and 2nd round has value.
It just strikes me as a classic weird Indians dilemma, perhaps finding trouble trading him for something better than a Type B, holding onto him and he might not even be a Type B, or offer him arbitration as a Type B and he accepts.
All of that said, I assume we get more value than a Type B after this recent Cy Young like stretch he’s put forth.
I think the FO is probably happy to get either outcome. I’m thinking the Indians may very well offer Byrd a 1-year deal this off-season. Not trading him away means they may not have to give up a pick to sign him in the off-season.
by APV on Aug 9, 2008 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Actually, a new detail reared its head in the past week. Apparently, teams do not need to offer arbitration in order to receive compensation for Type B free agents. This is a sensible change, considering that under the new rules, no draft pick is being given up by the new team. It also would make sense if teams got only the sandwich pick for Type A free agents to whom they did not offer arbitration, but I’ve got no indication that that is part of the new rules.
