Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Indians, Sep 1, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
Chicago at Cleveland, 7:05 PM (WKYC)
Cliff Lee goes for win #20 tonight. The last Indian pitcher to win 20 games was Gaylord Perry, who did it way back in 1974. Wins have become less indicative of a pitcher's worth over the last thirty years, but consider this: in only three of his 19 wins did not meet the modern definition of a quality start (6 innings, 3 runs). And of his four no-decisions, only one wasn't a quality start.

The local station here in Columbus that normally carries Indians games when they are on Channel 3 is showing “Friends” instead.
Andy Marte is free at last! Now, if only he could hit a breaking ball...
As a long time lurker let me say I’ve been really enjoying pithy banter that consistently comes from this site. I hope I can keep up.
To that end riddle me this…
Left pitcher… check
Rookie lefty pitcher… check
Rookie lefty pitcher with a six plus ERA…check
So of course Marte gets to give his very solid three week stretch and modest eight game hitting streak a breather.
Last rookie starter with a sky high ERA, Marte also got the day off.
Plus he also sits an inordinate amount versus lefties.
Coincidence?? I doubt it.
Whatta douchebag Wedge is…Way to tilt the scales to making sure your new bestest grinder Jamey friggin’ Carroll gets his option picked up.
Whatta disgrace…

shapiro says the only trade they seriously considered making with lee was for . . . yup, carlos quentin.
nah
left handed cy young winners > mvp winning left fielders
ha ha, no, i wouldn’t make the trade. without lee, this team would be awful.

I have. I loathe watching him flail and then stalk back to the dugout. He is my anti-Marte.
I crave the approval of others.
in a strange turn of events, Marte has turned into my anti-Marte

Shapiro’s priorities:
1) back end bullpen guy
2) one infielder with subsequent infield adjustments depending on what position that infielder plays
Infield? I’m not at all crazy about our OF production.

uh Manning, Matsuzaka has pitched over 40 fewer innings than Lee. The race is Lee and Halladay, period.
He said Santana isn’t quite a hitting/baseball God, but only cause God struggles sometimes with top end breaking stuff

more seriously, he said he’s very very good. Has the rare ability of taking a very aggressive approach to the plate, while also maintaining fantastic plate discipline. Also apparently has a cannon arm at catcher.

I want a replay of when STO hired Underpants and Manning. Bad move, needs to be overturned.
I crave the approval of others.
let’s see…we loved
Doug Jones
Jose Mesa (until…well…)
Mike Jackson (for awhile)
Bob Wickman (for awhile)

I hope not. His delivery still worries me and he hasn’t been as lights out as he used to be (aside from the ridiculous amount of saves). Paying 14+ million per year for a closer is stupid.
If he breaks the saves record, it’ll be more than that.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
I wish someone from the grounds crew would be assigned to fix the “:ndians.co n” sign behind home plate.

Shoppach with the sacrifice. I don’t know about that one, but whatever.

Chisenhall has hit his 19th and 20th doubles tonight for Mahoning Valley. I’m not sure, but I think that’s a lot for one of the short season leagues.
I prefer “the Chizl”
So the last person to hit 20 2Bs for Mahoning Valley was Chris Gimenez back in 2004. He hit 23 in 71 games (but he was 21).

BB-ref says that the league OPS is .690, so that gives him a 114 OPS+. Unfortunately, it also says he’s got 16 errors at SS so far.

Actually, a couple more doubles today will bring that up a few notches, of course.

I’m pretty sure I read (probably over at Lastoria’s place) that they are planning on moving him to 3B this off-season.

Caveats apply:
Franchise leaders, season, ERA+
can 2008 cliff lee travel back in time and start game 1 of the 2007 ALCS for us?

CHOO is so hot right now. I have to say, I’m kinda looking forward to a full year of him in the OF next year. Then again, I thought the same thing about Gutz last year around this time, and.. well.. yeah.

Ouchie, that one looked a little painful.

I know im violating off topic rule but….Sat night I saw the Dodgers/Dbacks game in person. i was sitting in the outfield. Manny threw me a warmup ball. My kid got a big kick out of it. Any ideas on how I could find a way to get Manny to sign the ball?
Off-topic rule? That’s what game threads are all about. Anyway, you might be able to contact someone from the Dodgers PR department or something like that, not really sure.

This is the most excited I have been for an Indians game in quite some time.

How happy would I be if we contributed to keeping the Sox out of the playoffs? Very very happy.

G. Perry’s 20th win was ALSO a 5-hit shutout.

I believe his issued 3 free passes, so I think he faced 4 over the minimum, unless there were DPs.

I spent the entire Spring waiting for the shoe to drop with Cliff. It wasn’t until late May when I realized that this was a sustaining thing he was doing. I feel dumb for doubting it for so long.
I made sure I watched every single pitch tonight. It’s amazing at how efficient Cliff is. Fastball, change and curve. That’s it. A simple deliverly and no time wasted in-between pitches. Even when he is done doing his work .. he is usually one of the first ones back into the dugout. No loafing .. just a hurried jog off the field. All told, just an amazing work of efficiency.
He fibbed in the post-game interview. This particular game meant a lot to him. That scream he let out after the game was over was unlike any reaction he has had all year. That was a huge burden to get off his shoulders (winning #20). I am just so happy he didn’t have to wait 2-3 starts to get it.
Got back from the game a little bit ago. Still buzzing all over.
I know this probably isn’t saying much, but that was the best game experience I’ve had this year, hands down. What a beautiful night and what a total thrill. The energy reminded me a lot of September 2007 down at the Jake. Good times.
2009 Season “greatly reduced expectations” check list:
1. Cliff Lee, 20 game winner.
2. Grady Sizemore, 40/40 club.
3. Cleveland Indians finish the year at .500 or greater.
4. Dealing a significant and/or killing blow to Chicago or Boston’s playoff hopes.

In Cliff we trust.
The game featured some interaction between Lee and Pierzynski, who exchanged words and stares beginning in the fourth inning and ending when the pitcher pointed to the White Sox dugout after the final out.
“His second at-bat, he slammed his bat down and stared me down,” Lee said. “I stared him down back. He was chirping at me from the dugout. Actually, I appreciate him doing that. It gave me a little extra energy.”
Pierzynski, naturally, had a different version.
“He yelled after the first out,” he said. “It was a 3-2 pitch and I popped up and slammed the bat down. It wasn’t meant anything toward him. It was just a popup.”
Told the White Sox players were standing on the railing staring at him after the game, Lee said, “I don’t care.”

Holy crap. Pierzynski loses every argument by default due to bleached hair, let alone the fact that Cliff is now a minor deity.
Minor? Dude’s moving up in the pantheon. I currently nominate Freyr, a Norse phallic fertility god:
In the Icelandic books the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda, Freyr is presented as one of the Vanir, the son of the sea god Njörðr, brother of the goddess Freyja. The gods gave him Álfheimr, the realm of the Elves, as a teething present. He rides the shining dwarf-made boar Gullinbursti and possesses the ship Skíðblaðnir which always has a favorable breeze and can be folded together and carried in a pouch when it is not being used. He has the servants Skírnir, Byggvir and Beyla. The most extensive surviving Freyr myth relates Freyr’s falling in love with the giantess Gerðr. Eventually, she becomes his wife but first Freyr has to give away his magic sword which fights on its own “if wise be he who wields it”. Although deprived of this weapon, Freyr defeats the giant Beli with an antler. However, lacking his sword, Freyr will be killed by the fire giant Surtr at Ragnarök, the end of the world.
