Drennan/Tait to do Saturday's Indians-Royals game on STO
Scanning an email I received from STO, and this caught my eye:
"7:00pm Cleveland Indians vs. Kansas City Royals - Bruce Drennan and Joe Tait step in to replace Matt and Rick and call the game. These legendary Cleveland Broadcasters have not worked together since 1982 when they called the Indians games at Municipal Stadium."
I'm not old enough to remember listening to them, but it'll be nice to give my ears and sanity a rest from Manning/Underwood

Thinking about Joe Tait just makes me think of listening to Cavs games on the radio in the late-80’s. Where’s Hot Rod Williams when you need him?
http://hasthelargehadroncolliderdestroyedtheworldyet.com -- just in case.
When I first seen that advertisement on STO, I thought it was an old-time game involving those two from seasons’ past, much like they show select games (like Len Barker’s perfect game) – I thought that that was what the advertisement referred to at first.
I had forgotten that the Royals and Indians had a game to make up; when I realized it and after I paid more attention to the commercial, I realized that this was going to be a live broadcast of a live game. It should be interesting, and different from Manning/Underwood. I’m not sure I’ll see much of the game on Saturday night, but perhaps I’ll catch a little of it, or perhaps part of the replay.
Just my 2 cents.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
Chuck, I’m surprised you haven’t weighed in on this. I’ve heard you rave about Tait’s Tribe broadcasts before.
I’m ambivalent about this. In my book Joe Tait is second only to Jimmy Dudley – and my bias for all things 50’s Indians colors that evaluation. Tait is the antithesis of Hamilton, much less drama, much more accurate with the calls, not as edgy but still capable of zinging a guy when he deserves it. But when Joe raises his voice there are very few false positives. If Joe thinks it’s going out, the smart money’s on a round tripper, not a near warning track fly off of Jamie Carroll’s bat. I think you guys who’ve never heard Joe call a baseball game will be pleasantly surprised.
But why in the name of Vin Scully did they hafta team him up with that cazzi schemo Drennan? I’m with Spidey here – Score was a much better partner for Tait than Drennan. And if they wouldda teamed Joe up with Feller – he did play-by-play for the Tribe for a while – I’d be rhapsodic!
Anyway I’m in Princeton now – goin’ to the game tonight in Baltimore – and won’t be able to hear Joe. Too bad, I guess, but then again Drennan would probably make me incazzat and spoil it.
On a completely unrelated note, it looks like I’ve landed a gig with Boeing back on Maui, so my days as an itinerant engineer maybe coming to an end. Imagine, East Coast Indians day games at 7:00AM and West Coast night games over at 7:00 PM – heaven!

Feller never worked with Tait, though. Joe Castiglione is doing Red Sox games, and Jack Corrigan works for the Rockies. What’s Denny Schreiner up to these days? Feller would be fun, though. Given that he once compared Thome to a hippopotamus, no telling what he’d say about the current Tribe. Best Feller quote ever:
What the hell do (these HOF committee members) know about baseball? I know more about Aristotelian metaphysics and string theory than they do about baseball.
AWESOME!!! Thanks for this reminder. Are they going to go back to the “Indians Fever” theme song?
I hope we hear a few “Ducks on the pond” comments from Drennan…
My preference was Joe Tait and Herb Score on 3WE back in the ’70s.

Anybody have an mp3 or know where one could buy an mp3 of “Go, Joe Charboneau”? I’ve been searching for a vinyl copy for years to no avail.

I couldn’t listen to that clown Drennan. Ruined the Tait for me, and made me miss Herb Score. God, what a simpleton Drennan is.

If they had him team up with Munch, they could destroy your average sane man in a matter of minutes.

The first time I ever heard Munch, I was painting my new laundry room with some heavy-duty high-moisture paint. While applying the first coat with only a small window open for ventilation, my head hurt, I was dizzy and I couldn’t follow what the guy on sports radio was saying. I had to lie down and take a nap when I was done.
The next day, fully recovered, I happened upon Munch on my car radio and realized that he makes absolutely no sense and was more likely the cause of disorientation then the paint fumes. I am amazed that there are people out there who can a.) follow his train of thought and b.) function highly enough to dial a phone and have a conversation with the nut-job.
When I applied the second coat, with the radio tuned to music, I had no symptoms.

I was living in Columbus – it least it was a close approximation of living any way – when I first heard Munch. He was doing a 90 second sports bit on the Classic Rock FM station there – 96-something? He said he was from Cleveland – oh great a homeboy, maybe we’ll hear about something other than the Buckeyes or those goddam Reds! – and that he grew up around Fleet Ave. – better yet he’s from the neighborhood, I’ll bet I’ll get the inside skinny on the Tribe! And then he started talking about baseball and football and what not and then I thought “Holy Shit this sturnzo doesn’t know his ass from thirdbase!” Man what an embarrassment!!!
