Jamey Carroll at 3B again. After Marte got two hits last night. And the opposing pitcher is a lefty. Super!
Hey, let’s get seriouSLewis now. It’s a big night.

I’m turning into a bit of a Zachson fan. I think a good off-season could make a respectable starter of him yet. I remain higher on him than on Reyes.
by fleerdon on Sep 10, 2008 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Though just so we’re clear, I like the Reyes pick-up quite a bit.
by fleerdon on Sep 10, 2008 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions
I still wish a guy who was 6’5" threw harder than 89-90 mph. I know I’m obsessing about this….but we’re collecting a lot of guys with those mean 88-91 mph fastballs. I just think in the context of a baseball series you want to throw a little more diversity at the opponents.
That’s a good point. The contrast may actually be more important than the absolute advantage of having a 95 mph fastball.
by Logodaedalus on Sep 10, 2008 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions
That’s difficult to argue against, but at some point, you play the cards in your hand, no? If they’re throwing strikes, well, let’s have ’em. Anyway, Lee-Laffey-Sowers-Jackson-SLewis would be the bane of the Yankees and the Reds.
by fleerdon on Sep 10, 2008 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t have anything against JZ — he’s pitched well enough — but just hypothetically, suppose Lewis pitches a CG shutout. It’d be hard to just say, “Thanks very much, you’re done”, wouldn’t it?
But maybe giving Reyes some more time off would be more likely than skipping Jackson.

So how’s SLewie look?
If you need me, I'll be senselessly rooting for Sizemore 40/40 for the remainder of 2008.
12 pitches, 8 strikes, 3 weak outs. Perfect through one!

Still, he’s making them swing. Against the Orioles, I consider that sound strategy.

I went to the game. My entire section hated me and I loved every minute of it. We even corrupted tOSU’s favorite cheer, you know, the one where the entire stadium goes O-H-I-O. OU people would shout U after the last O each time they did it so it would read O-H-I-O-U. It was so cool, lol.
Great!
I spent three years at OU in the late 70s and have a fondness for the place. OSU’s appropriation of “Ohio” is right up there with the pretentious “The.” Can you imagine Michigan State doing the Script Michigan?
I can’t imagine Michigan State being able to spell Michigan, let alone script it in formation on the football field.
ZINGER!!!
Pinch-hitting Carroll for Marte at this point in the season is inexcusable. I’ve had it with Wedge. He’s a younger, paler Dusty Baker.
Having met a lot of MSU alums over the last few years, my view of the place has softened. There are some ridiculously bright Michigan residents that U of M more or less gives the finger to, let alone out-of-staters. The fact that MSU is something of the school for what Ann Arbor considers the chaff of its applicant crop says a lot more about Michigan than it does about MSU.

how is it? I’ve actually been on a major classic gaming kick lately, playing through the original Zelda and a bunch of SNES games I always wanted as a kid.
Not watching the Indians much these days has definitely freed up my evenings.
Mechwarrior 3050 (GIANT ROBOT SMASH) and the Mega Man X series. I’ll probably tackle Chrono Trigger after the playoffs.
It ends up being a lot like Civilization or something. It’s not not fun but it’s not as biology driven as I (a biology major) would’ve liked.
This is great, I’m commenting from my passenger seat in my school parking lot, listening on the radio.

So I liked Lowell before he was on Boston and kind of wish we had a slick-fielding 3B who was a solid line drive hitter. And I’ve always liked Wakefield, in part because Boston jerked him around for so long.
Lowell wasn’t much of a slick-fielding, line-drive-hitting 3B for the Marlins. The Bosox got him because they needed to take his salary, and voila he rehabilitates when he gets to Boston. David Ortiz is kind of the same way.
I see we have our Olympic 4×100 meter relay team of Peralta, Martinez, Shoppach, and Garko batting 4-5-6-7.
Still an Ohio boy through and through!

He’s given up some decent fly balls, but nothing to really complain about. He’s been significantly better than I was expecting.

Really relies on fastball command. Changeup looks good. Breaking ball hasn’t been anything special. It hasn’t been close enough to the strike zone to get hitters to chase. Tries to work both side of the plate with the fastball, so that’s encouraging. Definitely a “pitcher.” WWill be interesting to see how he responds the first few times after he gets roughed up—-does he becomes a nibbler a la Sowers? or does he trust his stuff, maintain the gameplan, and let his defense do the work?
His AA/AAA numbers look nice. He’s already had the requisite TJ surgery. If he gets a few more starts and looks decent, is he a keeper on the ML roster, Columbus-bound, or trade bait as part of a package? I admit to being torn, having been so wrong on Gutz, Garko and others.
Columbus with very little doubt. He doesn’t break camp with the big league club unless a number of unfortunate things happen.

Barring a season worst (I think at least) bullpen implosion the Indians will be only two games below .500 after tonight’s game. That has to make more people than just me smile.

In my zeal for ripping on Ellsbury, I was looking up Juan Pierre’s stats on baseball-reference.com, and the sponsorship on that page is priceless:
Lots and lots of grit and hustle doesn’t obscure the 700+ PA’s of 75 OPS+ production Pierre brings. He’s David Eckstein in the outfield. Bill Plaschke’s unsavory fetish notwithstanding, Juan Pierre should not be a regular in baseball.
