1-0 Toronto on the Free Byrd.
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
“At this time of the year, you’re tired,” Meloan said. “Your body is tired and your arm is tired. When you take that much time off, your body shuts down. It feels almost like it’s the offseason.”
He should have a heart-to-heart talk with Andy Marte about tempering his expectations.
And he should learn how to play dominoes.
Platooning with Jamey Carroll is not freedom. Free Andy Marte!

So … interesting blackout news.
MLB renegotiated the Saturday blackout rules with Fox — as of only about a month ago. The new rule is that any game that starts before 1:10 p.m. EST or after 7:00 p.m. EST is not blacked out — before, every game that started before 7:00 was blacked out. So the result is simply that we can now see 1:00 Saturday games.
Funny thing, though, is that although these games are showing up on mlb.tv, they’re still not on Extra Innings. Can anyone tell me if they’re on Directv?
It’s raining again, but the game is about to start.

The radar actually looks good despite a drizzle that should linger for the first part of this game.
They should be able to get in both games tonight.

Billy Butler is mediocre. I was watching him during last night’s game (seats on the 1B side). He’s really … er … big (at least 240) and he looks like he’s totally unathletic. Barely can bend over to reach low throws (and acts lazy too — several warm up tosses went under his glove).
time machine from your comment — about….6-7 seconds

There are three recorded instances of a tripleheader in Major League Baseball, indicating three games between the same two teams on the same day. These occurred between the Brooklyn Bridegrooms and Pittsburgh Innocents on September 1, 1890 (Brooklyn won all three); between the Baltimore Orioles and Louisville Colonels on September 7, 1896 (Baltimore won all three); and between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds on October 2, 1920 (Cincinnati won two of the three). Triple headers are now prohibited under the current collective bargaining agreement, except when the first game is the conclusion of a game suspended from a prior date. This would only happen in the extremely rare case of the only remaining dates between teams being doubleheaders and no single games are left for the suspended game to precede.

I’m just done watching him. I hold out no hope for his starts right now and won’t until I don’t have to watch him for 6 months.
I’m hoping this is related to the missed time from the injury and he will rebound after offseason conditioning, kind of like Lee

I more or less agree but I think this sort of analysis is more than a little lacking. I mean, we all laugh about Bonderman and Verlander but their stuff is probably on part with Fausto’s. And Fausto has control problems.
I don’t know which one’s Drennan and which one’s Tait but the one on the L looks like William Shatner.

Just one of the years for Teahen, who’s been one of the worst offensive regulras in the league, yet he’s done handled the Indians and Tigers like nothing this season.

If the Royals make Greinke available this winter, I hope the Indians dabble. Dude’s 24 and about to enter a dominant stretch.
what are the chances of that? Seems to me he’s become a “core”, insofar as the Royals have one

Manning or Underwood saying the word in KC is they’re gonna shop him in the offseason, see of they can get a multii-prospect package back.
Have to see a replay, but is it really a break if a smash-liner goes right at a guy, and then he screws up the throw?
Yes. And on that note, I’d like to point out that the equivalent of David Eckstein is rotating with Marte on an every-other-day basis. When you put it in that light, Carroll’s continued play at third base is just scary.
You have to keep in mind, though, Carroll is an above-average shortstop as a defender, and he’s probably giving us some serious plus defense over there.
I mean, it’s crazy, but it’s not TOTALLY crazy.
By the way, I was wrong, it’s actually 788, dating back four weeks from today.
.315 / .362 / .426
I mention this in part because I was mystified by Volt’s comment above, feeling more and more like Marte sucks. This is a strange time to be feeling that way, and if that’s your “gut feeling,” it’s mostly because you’re sick of looking at his poor season numbers. In part, it may be the sinking feeling that even if he proves he’s a major leaguer, he still might not be a good major leaguer.
I’m just scared to have good bench players, only because I don’t think Wedge uses them correctly. Using Shoppach as a personal catcher for one pitcher last year was a good start. Playing Carrol every other day at third base is not.
As for Marte, I’m at least comforted by the fact that “good” major league third baseman are few and far between. What Marte can do over a full season compared to what Beltre will do for $12M isn’t worth the price difference. And that doesn’t even consider controllable player years. Nor does it consider that Cleveland should be a pretty good hitting team even with a merely serviceable 3B.
He’ll probably get on base at a much lower clip, but I don’t think Marte would be that far off a Blake season.
Hamilton said Wedge “desperately” wants to have Carroll on the team in 2009. Says he knows how to play the game right. A utility player who can play every day. Also a clubhouse leader with Casey and C.C. gone.
Yeah, check this out, xrickx … Carroll doesn’t have enough innings to “qualify” for a defensive title — if they existed — but in a limited sample, he looks stellar at both 2B and 3B
Here’s all 23 qualifying 3B … and Carroll is at .750 RZR, with 6 OOZ in 118 innings, so that’s about one per 20 innings. Those rates are about identical to Scott Rolen, who has made more outs per inning at 3B than anyone else this season. (Quick rule of thumb, each OOZ is worth 4-5 points of RZR, given most starters will end up with about 225 possible plays.)
Here’s all 17 qualifying 2B, and Carroll is at .829 RZR with 11 OOZ in 569 innings, about one per 52 innings. His RZR matches Chase Utley for 5th place, although his overall numbers are more comparable to Kelly Johnson, maybe the 8th best.
Keep in mind, Carroll is really a natural shortstop, we just haven’t used him there this season because of AbaCab. I think we all tend to forget that he really is here as a plus defender, maybe because he seems more solid than flashy. But, you know, a solid guy can make tons of outs in the field. The numbers above may just be a small sample size, or he may be a little more comfortable on the left side (SS and 3B) than on the right side (2B).
I’ll tell you what else, the guy has an OBP of .355. You know how many 2B-SS-3B in the AL have a higher OBP than that? Would you believe seven?
And let me stress, this is not an anomaly, this is what we knew about Carroll — plus defender, puts up quality at-bats so as not to make outs too prodigiously. He wouldn’t be anybody’s obvious pick as an everyday 3B, but honestly, I’ve seen crazier.
I’d vouch for his glove any day of the week. It’s just that he’s not going to be a backup shortstop on a team where Asdrubal is the second baseman. I know the Indians will choose wisely in keeping Carrol over Barfield next season—-to this decision I agree.
I’m just still not done ranting over the fact that in this lost season, when Choo and Francisco and Shoppach became bright spots in their own ways, Marte wasn’t even given the opportunity.
space-time is bent due to that blackhole. makes some weird stuff happen

Not very scientific of me, but I just feel like he’s never gotten the feel of his pitches back since taking the time off, and I don’t really expect that he will this month. And I don’t really care, because I fully expect him to come back and dominate in 2009.
I mean, if he wasn’t “ruined” as of Sept 2006, he’s sure as hell not “ruined” now. I figure, anyway.
yeah, that’s what I figure too
in baseball, you don’t always have to be perfectly scientific :-)

Well, I'm going to change the subject:
Anyone heard about any of the Fall League assigments? I am really interested in seeing who the Tribe sends to Hawaii…
They’re available. You can search the archives of this site or google it. I don’t remember who’s going but it’s nobody very exciting. The usual suspects.
Wow, the spread on the poll question favoring Shoppach by almost 2-1. I guess I figured he’d edge out Choo, mainly because of the longer time he’s sustained production, but I didn’t think it’d be by that much
I guess that’s true. That 5 XBH game alone probably goes a long way for a lot of people

Glad to see Meloan out there.
Watching Brendan Donnelly pour gas on the fire the other night, I found myself getting irked that we were seeing him at all. I mean, why are we putting this guy into games, or even paying him to be on our roster? We made him a way-too-nice deal to release him at the end of the year, despite his not being eligible for free agency. We might as well have hung on to Borowski if we’re pitching that guy. He’s not under contract next year, so DFA his ass.
If that’s Rusty Meloan, I want to see Strong Meloan.

Aw, we don’t do real statistics here, man, we just do basic arithmetic. You start throwing around standard deviations, people get confused and frustrated.
Oh, sorry, letting my work blend with my baseball (I’m just now preparing a lecture on variability for a stats class)

Yeah, it’s funny, that sort of thing generally won’t get you any cred on a baseball forum — not even on this one.
That’s surprising, because the theoretical statistics gets me laid constantly… I’m sure you can imagine.

So my roommate asked this and I don’t know the answer:
If there’s a rain-out for a sold-out game and then that game is rescheduled for a doubleheader, does that mean that after the first game of the doubleheader the stadium has to be cleared so that all of the previous ticketholders have seats?
Because normally with doubleheaders you can just sit there, right?
A true doubleheader is a ticket to both games. I haven’t know the Indians to do that in years. Normally there’s a 1:05 game and they clear the stadium, then a 7:05 game (like today was supposed to be).
That Toronto doubleheader earlier this year (of the 18 straight scoreless innings by starters fame) was that way, wasn’t it?
by Logodaedalus on Sep 13, 2008 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions
That’s probably why they schedule these day-night dealies, so there’s room in between. Fortunately today, with so few people in the stadium, they can let them stay

Also with the room in-between, you hope people get tired of sticking around and leave, right?

I imagine their vigilance in enforcement will be directly proportional to the difference between the sum of sold tickets for the two games and the stadium capacity
