Tribe in Cleveland thru 2023
The Indians have extended their lease with Gateway (the non-profit group that owns Progressive Field) for another ten years — until 2023. The extension includes a provision that allows the team to play five "home games" at a site outside the U.S. and Canada over any five-year period.

World domination here we come!
In reality though this could be good in terms of getting some opening days played in a place that won’t get snowed out, ie the Tokyo Dome or maybe Estadio Azteca? Too bad it’ll cost a few home games though.

Starts searching for a ballpark in New Zealand
One day I'll get over to watch the Tribe play

Good. If the tribe ever left i think i would literally be done with sports forever.

Agreed. I think the only thing that hurt me more is if Notre Dame moved to Ann Arbor or West Hollywood or some other awful place.
Il faut d'abord durer.

Gee Notre Dame moving to Nova Scotia would make college football much more attractive for me.

You mistyped “just off the watery edge of Nova Scotia, though surely NBC would still broadcast their games underwater”.

didn’t chuck predict cleveland would forclose itself into nonexistence by then?

Not exactly, what I said was they’ll end up in Columbus sometime in my lifetime. And since I’m damn near as old as Methusela that should happen pretty quick!

Those five games outside the US and Canada are interesting. I wonder if they have their eyes on Korea (Choo?) or Japan.

it’s probably nothing specific. more of a just in case. just something standard possibly even directed by mlb just in case they want the indians to play in one of their little international promotions.

Caracas would be sweet with Droobs, Vic, Gutz and Raffy B making the place go crazy.
(Mujica and Rincon are also Vinotintos, but hopefully we wont see them in a Tribe uni on any continent in the near or distant future.)

i’m guessing the latest fueling stop for russian bombers won’t be hosting MLB anytime soon
by Gradyforpresident on Sep 15, 2008 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
OOOOOOOhhh! I loved “Red Dawn” too.
Russian bombers refueling? What is this, 1960? They have long-range missiles GFP. They don’t need to fly to Venezuela or Cuba.
by PatBordersHelmet on Sep 15, 2008 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
we’re about to go way off topic here.
said bombers would almost assuredly not be used in any nuclear confrontation with the united states. however, it is a serious power projection into the western hemisphere that the USA historically absolutely would not stand for. russian airbases in latin america could threaten sea lanes, or the panama canal, or could potentially alter the strategic balance of power in south america; i.e. giving those who adhere to the so-called bolivarian revolution a hand-up in relations with countries that may want to align themselves more with the united states.
combine that with chavez’ ever present, consistently bombastic rhetoric towards the united states, and i am very prepared to claim that venezuela would not be a particularly welcoming place to start a MLB season.
also, Ugueth Urbina is still in jail.

They have long-range missiles GFP
Yeah, well they’re about as accurate as a Jason Davis fastball – when they and if they can actually launch them. Don’t worry boyz, the Ruskie stuff works about as well as the Brewer’s bullpen.
Relax GFP and put that saber away – the 10 foot tall, bullet proof Russian no exists.

Quite apart from the unpleasant relations between the US and Venezuela, I don’t think Venezuela represents a top priority market for MLB — they’re already nuts about baseball (US baseball included), but they don’t have the broad base of middle class fans with money in their pockets to represent a profitable opportunity for MLB. Asia is another story — lots of money, big consumer markets, and baseball fans who are only now beginning to get tuned in to the US leagues.

True. The same can be said about the Dominican Republic.

Staying on topic, politics aside, Venezuela is actually a great baseball country. In VZ the two most highly regarded dream jobs for kids are baseball player and classical musician. The number of Venezuelans in MLB is still increasing. Partly from the investment that many teams put into VZ back in the late 90s when they (including the Indians) built training facilities. By 2004 a few teams had already abandoned their VZ, but the remaining organizations were pretty much told to divest by the U.S. President in 2004. The Indians closed shop that year, but the facility remains open at the expense of the Venezuelan government. Baseball is alive and well in Venezuela. Regardless what you think of the politics, the people, the majority being baseball fans, are warm and knowledgeable and should be judged individually.
In Caracas, everybody loves Omar Vizquel. It’s the country folk to the West that like Ozzie Guillen.
Also, the hot dogs are intense. They’re skinny sausages served on a pita-like bun and absolutely buried in cole slaw, mustard, mayo, relish, and crushed potato chips . Hot sauce and cilantro sauce are optional.
VZ is a great baseball trip.

But, staying with the topic of your post—which pretty much approves of cold war era stalemates. I’d prefer more diplomatic relations with adverse countries.
Outreach with sporting events can be the best way two normalize and open communication between two countries that have made little progress elsewhere.

This conversation may not have strayed over the line, but you can see it from here.

actually i agree with this sentiment: “I’d prefer more diplomatic relations with adverse countries” entirely.

You went all The Day After on me, but I think your Ugueth Urbina joke diffused any potential crisis thereby saving both of us — and more importantly — the entire LGT community from a dangerous game of brinksmanship.

I won’t get into the rest of this, but I’m glad you mention Ugueth Urbina. It seems obvious to me that he’s innocent.

Speaking of going to games in Cleveland, has LGT done any polls on member geography? Comments on the board reveal where a lot of LGTers are from, but I’d be interested to see it quantified by state and country (hat tip to NZ tribe fan).

There’s some info on this in the “Introductions” thread, under Essential Links. We’ll probably re-open that thread sometime soon to let newer folks introduce themselves.

Google has some nice map applications for this. Can you put a map on the main page toward the bottom?
