A sad day, with the Tribe off tomorrow and my family and I flying to Australia’s Gold Coast for a two week holiday Saturday (NZT) this is effectively my last game of the season, strangely weeks ago I wanted it to end, now I’m going to miss it. Whilst early, thanks to everyone who contributes to such a great site. Bring on April 2009.
A great way to farewell 2008 with Cliff winning number 23.

Gutierrez is hitting .467 in his last 10, and Droobz is hitting .400 in his last 10, do we really have to be batting Carrol in the two spot? Or start him at all?
That was a nicely hit ball, but when Carrol gets a hit, it’s just okay. I don’t recall a fiesta of any type ever occurring.

i feel like i dont know the NFL at all. It’s early in the season so things are bound to be volatile. New players, players being hurt, players forgetting how to catch a ball (Braylon Edwards), etc. And I don’t know what I’m doing, so maybe im wrong.

Indeed. Sounds like the lost album between Justice and TBA. I mean, I actually really like TBA, Load/Reload, but this is phenominal. The Day That Never Comes is an odd choice for first single though. Easily the worst song on the album, IMO.

Agreed on the single. Funny that it sounds more like what you’d think “Unforgiven III” would sound like than “Unforgiven III” does. My fave track right now is that instrumental towards the end.

I love the clean verse melody in TDTNC, but the second half of the song is jumbled and incoherent and sounds like they tried too hard to make a new “One.” I’m really diggin’ on UIII though… the vocals and the lyrics are hauntingly good. Also love “All Nightmare Long,” and the instrumental kicks ass too. Very little filler on here in general, although there are a few songs I can see getting “meh” over many listens.

There won’t be enough games for it to happen this year, but glancing at their trends it looks like Francisco and Gutz’ OPS percentages are headed toward a convergence. It’ll be interesting to see where Ben ends up.
All your biases are belong to us, Jay.
by cleveland teamer on Sep 17, 2008 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Gutz’ power is finally coming around. It’ll be exciting when his slg pokes about .400, his raw OPS over .700. Oh, it’ll happen.
Maybe it’s because I’m not paying enough attention, but I like to think that Ascab and Gutz are both displaying their true, great offensive potential. I like to think that they’re cheering each other on.
by cleveland teamer on Sep 17, 2008 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Well I’d like to think they’re even better than that, but at least they’re showing that they belong in the major leagues. Only months ago that didn’t appear to be the case.
Gutz’ bat is still disappointing, but it’s looking like it’s at least good enough. I think his ISO SLG. led the team last year. He and Shoppach need to have a brainstorming session.
if the two really have equal true talent OPS values, Gutz is clearly much more valuable given his defense and should be in the lineup more often
but of course…we’ve been hitting Francisco in the middle of the lineup for quite awhile, while Gutz has been in the 7 or 8 slot
That’s a batting order question. It’s entirely rational that you could have one guy who should be higher in the batting order while the other guy is in the lineup more often. I know you’re don’t think that Gootz’s defensive skills should have him higher up in the batting order.
my statement was meant more to get at their perceived offensive value. People seem to think more highly of Francisco this year offensively, in part reflected by his slot in the batting order.
Right. And sometimes we even get the contortion that his (quite circumstantial) placement in the batting order means we should be even more impressed with his not terribly impressive numbers.
Just looked, his OPS+ has slipped to 99, meaning that his numbers overall (764 OPS) are slightly below league average (766) — well below average for a corner OF (795) of course.
Over his last 400 PA: .223 / .314 / .401. Really not good.
i’m totally taking this as justification and victory

Statistical analysis proves that there is no such thing as “clutch” posting of Jesus and the dinosaurs images. What appears to be clutch is merely the standard distribution of images one would expect over a small sample size. GFP may have come through today, but over time one would expect a corresponding paucity of Jesus images, with GFP’s JDA (Jesus-Dinosaur Average) regressing toward the statistical mean.

Just a late observation here…Wedge has been trying a lot of different lineups, but he generally tries to use what he thinks is his best lineup in games Lee starts…and in the last 6 games Lee has started, Jamey Carroll has been the starting 3rd baseman.
Hammy said something along the lines today of “Carroll makes the play at third… and that is why he’s playing there.” This appears to be the new company line.
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
Except that the reason Cliff lost is that Carroll did not make a routine play at third. If Carroll makes that play, Cliff leaves having given up only 3 runs and with 23 wins.
Platooning with Jamey Carroll is not freedom. Free Andy Marte!
by woodsmeister on Sep 18, 2008 8:43 AM EDT up reply actions
Sure, but if Lee was lifted after 6, when he clearly didn’t have his best stuff, then he only gives up 2 ER. The bullpen may have blown it for him, however. I blame the manager more for letting Lee stay in the game than for starting Jamey Carroll (and I want to smack Carroll upside the head for the baserunning blunder from which he was rescued more than missing that play at third).
The idea that we have some reliever who is a better bet to pitch the 7th inning than Cliff Lee, even without his best stuff, is more than a little ridiculous.
Rule of thumb: Cy Young contenders tend to be much much MUCH better than a bad bullpen’s middle relievers. Removing the starter isn’t entirely about the starter, it’s also about the best option after that.
Does the organization believe that Carroll is better defensively at third than Marte? I think Wedge certainly believes this, and it may actually be true. If so, it looks as if we may see a lot of Carroll at third next year. The sad thing is, Carroll may be the tribe’s best in house short-term solution at third. This is not good.
If the organization truly believes this, it makes me question what kind of metrics they are using that I as a casual observer can’t see, because to my unprofessional eyes, Marte is clearly superior defensively.
Platooning with Jamey Carroll is not freedom. Free Andy Marte!
by woodsmeister on Sep 18, 2008 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions
“Clearly superior?” Really? It’s, like, very, very clear?
I think Marte is a fine defender and would only get better with more regular playing time. But Carroll by observation, by reputation and by the numbers is an excellent infielder at pretty much every position. His range numbers at 2B and 3B put him among or very near the elite defenders.
Like I said, I am a casual observer. Maybe I am blinded by the shabby treatment that they’ve given Marte and I wish this to be true. I have not looked at the numbers (and I know that admitting this is pretty much the same as losing the argument). Maybe I’m still comparing Marte to Blake, who generally looked horrible, instead of comparing him to Carroll.
All I know is that every time I see Jamey Carroll out there at third base instead of Andy Marte, it annoys me. I suppose I am projecting that annoyance onto Carroll, who has done nothing to deserve it, especially when, as a veteran, he plays as boneheaded as he did in this game.

I wasn’t implying that Wedge has Carroll in there because of his defense. I think it’s actually because of his hitting. He plays Carroll because it gives them the absolute best chance to win that night, with Lee pitching.
Wedge has been very complimentary of Marte’s defense lately. But it’s probably more damning to Marte that as of right now he’s sitting some because of his bat.
That’s a pretty keen observation. Also, I notice that Dellucci only played once in that same timeframe.
I was wondering if Wedge refrained from using Perez last night to save him for tonight. Especially when the game became tight.
Could be. However, it appears he’s trying not to overuse Perez lately, so I’m not sure that’s related to Lee. Maybe there’s something going on with Perez.
The paper this morning said Wedge had hoped that Perez would pitch the 9th as well, but he had to work too hard in the 8th (30 pitches I think). If he was willing to let Perez go two innings, he’s probably okay. He’s already at 74 innings (more than last year’s ML totals, anyway) and is around 70 appearances. I suspect they’re just trying not to overuse him so he’ll be okay next year. He’s really important to the bullpen. He basically IS the bullpen (along with Lewis).
