Clemens heartbroken by Yankee snub
No Clemens, no Torre, no Steinbrenner ... it's almost as though they were trying to pretend like the last seven years never happened.
Gee, you think he'll still try to get the Hall of Fame to enshrine him in a Yankees cap?
Come to think of it, I wonder why they Yankees didn't sign him again this season in June, announcing it from the owner's box and everything. Could have been just the shot in the ass the team needed this season.

That got me thinking….do the Blue Jays have any players inducted in the Hall wearing their cap? I can’t think of any off the top of my head. I suppose they may have Roberto Alomar some day.

Without doing any research, I believe the answer to this is no. Robbie will presumably go in as a Blue Jay. He’s totally deserving, but it might take a while as he doesn’t have any magic numbers.

I think you’re right. Dave Stieb isn’t a hall of famer; nor is Tom Henke, Tony Fernandez or Jorge Bell. Maybe, if he keeps it up, Roy Halladay might be a contender. But, Robbie Alomar is the most likely guy to go in as the first Blue Jay.

I think Robbie will be inducted in his second or third year, and I won’t be surprised if it’s in his first.

Yeah, I don’t think it should take him long. He doesn’t have the magic numbers, but he’s widely regarded as a great defensive second baseman and he was a very good hitter for many years.
Plus, he was the best player in baseball at his position for, what, 4 or 5 years? Any player you can say that about is a definate Hall of Famer.

Tell that to Ron Santo and Bobby Grich.

Well, Santo should be in the Hall. I don’t know enough about Grich to comment about him.

I’d be floored if he were elected on the first ballot, as it doesn’t happen too often for hitters without magic numbers. Puckett, Smith, Bench, and Morgan are the only guys in the last 25 years to do so.
Puckett had the lofty batting average, charisma, and whole career getting cut short to illness thing. Ozzie was regarded as far and away the best defensive shortstop of all time, plus he did back flips. Bench and Morgan each had multiple mvps and played on the big red machine. I don’t think Alomar falls into this category, but with hall voters, who really knows.
More likely, I think, he’ll get the Sandberg (3rd try), Fisk (2nd try), and Carter (6th try) treatment. For no real reason, I think it will be closer to Carter than Fisk, but this might be wrong, as Robbie was a flashy defender, which will most certainly help.

Seems like four in the last 25 years is actually not all that few, considering.
Magic numbers are for sluggers, not skill-position guys. Ten Gold Gloves is a pretty magic number for a second baseman who could hit and steal bases, and Alomar has ringz.
I also think that as the new generation of BBWAA members settles in, the whole first-ballot thing is getting less and less popular. Still, the over-under on how many ballots he’ll need is probably 2 rather than 1.5.

According to one list I found, the answer is no. 12 Clevelanders, however.

I remember hearing a suggestion that Clemens’ cap should have “$” on it.

I think it should have a picture of Clemens’ own face on it.

Gee they lose their historic stadium, they don’t make the play-offs and one of their all time greats feels sad. Why can’t I generate any empathy for the poor, down trodden Yankees?

“Clemens watched the telecast inside his mansion, which is still suffering the effects of Hurricane Ike weeks after it tore through Texas.”
Poor guy. I think a lot of people would take his “Broke down mansion” over our current homes.

This is part of our proud heritage as Indians fans. All the great old American League town have this legacy, but at least we were good enough to hang with them for a while, which is more than you can say for the Royals.

This from Chicagoan Mike Royko:
Hating the (New York) Yankees is as American as pizza pie, unwed mothers, and cheating on your income tax.
It’s my God-given right as an American citizen to hate those sons-of-bitches and their fans too!

It’d be better if it eliminated either the Yankees or the Red Sox while allowing a team to clinch that wasn’t the Yankees or the Red Sox. But I take your point.

Nah, as Roger intimated, his best years on drugs obviously were with Toronto — although whatever he was on that one year in Houston, hey doc, give me an order of that!
