Before or after Jake’s return?
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
Pre Jake, I figure: Lee, Carmona, Reyes, Laffey, Sowers, Huff, Jackson to start the year… with a new acquisition probably stuck in there somewhere, and with room for Huff to trade up

I’m tempted to put Huff ahead of Sowers.
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
Ditto, though it probably depends on how everyone looks in the spring. Also, I know they were trying to keep Huff’s innings down this year since he hasn’t pitched a whole lot the last two years, I wonder if they’ll have a cap on them next year as well.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
I think there’s a good chance that’s how it would end up, but I think Sowers/Laffey would have to have a subpar spring training to have Huff start the year in Cleveland. Which could happen. And of course, we’re really talking about the 6 spot, since there’s most likely going to be someone else stuck in there in the 3 or 4 spot, so it will also depend on performances at Columbus.
by Logodaedalus on Sep 3, 2008 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions
if they don’t look hugely different performance wise in the Spring, I’m sure we’ll go with Sowers over Huff. There’s much more pressure to figure out if Sowers is any good than Huff.
I’d like a new acquisition, and then I think off Lee, Carmona, Laffey, Huff and new guy (not necessarily in that order), followed by Sowers. Jackson and other fillers after that. Do you think of Reyes as fitting in the middle of the rotation all year?
Well, he’s under Jake, obviously… I don’t think it’s possible to say anything now. If he finishes this year the way he’s been going, he certainly will have earned at least the 4th spot to start off. Beyond that will depend on how he does when the pressure’s back on.

Hey I thought you were in the clinics – get back out on the floor and check on your patients!!
Resident LGT beer kinda sewer
Nah we start in the clinics on Monday, this week is all of the orientation baloney.

internal medicine on the clinical teaching unit for 6 weeks. I’m pretty much expecting hell.

You’ll get it – not as bad as surgery though. Those interist are all anal retentive – they like to do a lot of navel gazing. The surgeons just work you like rented mules.
And what’s this 6 weeks BS? Shouldn’t it be at least two months.
Resident LGT beer kinda sewer
So internal medicine is 12 weeks total, 6 on CTU, 2 in elder care, 2 in onco and a 2-week selective. Surg is 12, paeds is 6, family is 6, psych is 6, obs/gyn is 6
by supermarioelia on Sep 3, 2008 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions
We had/have different splits. You’d do one service for a month – cardio, heme/onc, nephro, GI, Pulmonary, or neuro. You’d do “elder care” during your “splits” with ENT, etc. and CTU whasthat? Critical care? And that ain’t how you spell pedes!
Resident LGT beer kinda sewer
ctu’s the clinical teaching unit where you work as a team with the residents and consultants on one of the medicine floors with the sickest in-patients.

Yup… let’s hope for 6 tonight. Er, this early afternoon

Hmm. That’s an interesting proposition. I grew up in the south but am not really sure what a good resource is for this sort of spelling conflict.

Sowers numbers don’t show that he’s any better in the first (or first few) innings. Although I would have sworn it was true.
He’s had some terrible first innings, which is an argument against closing. My sense is that 2 through 5 have been pretty good, but I don’t have the stats.

I like how totally blah Hegan was about the pickoff/rundown.

Are we still doing posts of the week or have we given that up out of sheer indifference? If we were still doing posts of the week, this would be it.
Andy Marte is free at last! Now, if only he could hit a breaking ball...
Since Meloan has thrown so many innings due to his transition back to the rotation with the Dodgers, the Indians said they’ll go easy on him. I want to see Rich Rundles. He’s been shut-down facing lefties.

looked yesterday. The dude’s ERA is still very nice.

All those extra arms in the bullpen and we bring in Juan Rincon?

I can’t believe we keep rolling him out there. Are we trying to learn something about him for next year? I have no idea.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
He’s a free agent at season’s end. But I think they were hoping he was either injured or just had a serious mechanical flaw that when healed/fixed, would allow him to be dominant again. see: rafael betancourt
He was throwing fine when he was pitching ahead. Then he starts going 1-0, 2-0 on these guys. Then he’s pitching out of the stretch, which then causes him to revert to C.C. Sabathia playoff effectiveness.
Sowers has shown glimpses of being a decent back-end starter. And when you look at his AAA numbers over the last three years, it’s obvious that he is a Major League pitcher. But somehow, he becomes a nibbler, walks more guys, serves up more bombs, and his whole game goes to hell.
I really think he’s going to be a decent starter. He’s honestly not this bad.
hooray for hallway-before-class LGT

Good job swinging at that first pitch, Dellucci.

It’s that bad example that Dellucci sets by batting in front of him.

This would be a great time to hit your first bomb, Victor.
If you need me, I'll be senselessly rooting for Sizemore 40/40 for the remainder of 2008.
Except that he did that last night :)

MARTE COULDA DONE THAT
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
Seriously, we’re running guys like Brendan Donnelly & Juan Rincon out there, guys who pretty much have no future with this team, and for some reason we’ve gotta pinch-hit for Marte in every chance he gets with men on in the late innings?

One batter, zero innings

by Denver Tribe Fan on Sep 3, 2008 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Have I argued that?
I wonder if anyone has ever pitched to zero batters while recording more than 1/3 inning
That was rhetorical, not directed at you. I don’t think any pitcher has 0 BF and more than a third of an inning. B-Ref claims Tom Poholsky faced 0 batters in 2 IP in 1956, but that is quite clearly wrong.
I was just looking at that too, though apparently my PI subscription is expired (boo). Anyway, the boxscore (which is missing PBP) for that game lists him as giving up a hit in his 2 innings, despite not facing a batter, so it’s clearly wrong. It does seem that every other pitcher with 0 BF has only pitched 0.1 inning — I was figuring there was at least one situation in which a guy came on with multiple runners on & managed to get a couple of outs via, say, a pickoff/caught stealing and some shitty baserunning.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
Suck. I’d say 2 out of 3 ain’t bad, but we blew so many chances in this one it’s not even funny.

17 left on base this game. Awesome.

That’s total for all guys at bat…so it’s not as bad as you’d think.

As if I needed another reason, but Wedge’s ridiculous use of Marte has forced me to abandon the Indians for the rest of the season. Inexplicable. LGT. Minus Eric Wedge.
If Wedge hasn’t given him a shot this season, there’s no hope that we’ll ever find out what Marte can do. In a non-dominoes sense.

It’s fine to blame the manager since he is the main guy responsible for this but at this point (for a while now actually) this is equally Mark Shapiro’s fault. Possibly more so. There is absolutely no reason for Mark not telling Wedge he has no choice but to play Marte everyday and not just for 2 AB’s. If he refuses, replace him. But we are wasting Marte and it’s retarded.
What happens is Shapiro has told Wedge to play Marte. He checks and sees Marte’s name is written on the scorecard. Then, as soon as Mark leaves the ballpark for the ride back to Chardon, Wedge yanks Marte. It’s Shapiro’s fault—he’s been fooled about 50 times this season, the same trick.

I can’t believe the team that we played against today will likely win the division. Blah, I hate 2008.
They will get blown out in the playoffs no matter who they face.

for lack of a better place, Laporta has two bombs and is 4-5 with a BB in Akron’s opening playoff game
Which gives him a cumulative Akron OPS of .824 if I calculate correctly. Not bad at all, considering the bit of a cold stretch he went through.
