PTBNL update: It's not Lucroy
At least, probably not:
"Also pretty sure about the PTBNL in the CC trade, so much so I informed the player today. Wont be announced until after the world series, or at least that is my understanding."
Lucroy's not one of Kusnick's clients, hence my conclusion.

I’m pressing my luck for Michael Brantley.

I think we should make LGT t-shirts. Did anyone ever watch “We Need Girlfriends?” Instead of “Team Rod” and “Team Henry” we should do Team Brantley and Team Green.

I heard that Shapiro inserted a clause in the trade that if the Brewers win the World Series, the PLTBN list expands to include Ryan Braun. I’d be in favor of waiting….

I heard if the Brewers win the World Series CC becomes the PTBNL and he has to accept a 3-year deal.

My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with the girl who saw Sabathia pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it’s pretty serious.

yeah I thought he claimed it wasn’t either of his players at first, now he is saying that it is…….I’ll probably just wait until Mark Shapiro announces it. He seems to be a little more reliable.

Have to wait and see who the PTBN is — and we’ll never know what the choice was. Basically, we’ll never know the exact deal.
I have to say, whether Bryson’s injury turns out to be serious is really going to affect my view of the trade outcome.

Really, Jay? There was a lot of hope for Bryson, but he was/is a low-A reliever. That doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy you’d view as a make or break player in a deal.

Bryson’s got the stuff to close. If he’s healthy and put in the bullpen full-time, he could move quickly.

I understand…but I think it’s very hard to put much value in any low-A reliever unless they are obviously the second coming of Mariano Rivero. It’s the lowest value position a player can occupy (bullpen arm) and a long-way from the majors. I respect that elite closers are incredibly valuable. But the likelihood that even a dominating low-A reliever reaches that status is very low. The modal value for a low-A relief prospect I’m quite sure is 0 at the major league level.

High-risk/high-reward guy, but the bottom line is that I see it as a three-player deal. Bryson was not a randomly selected bottom-feeder, he was a real prospect.

That was my first thought, too. But that was a week ago, and he hasn’t appeared in any of the four games they’ve played. I’d have thought they’d put him right back in there two days later or at least three or four days later, but they haven’t. You have to wonder.

Hello Jay,
From Lastoria’s site, the Indians and Bryson don’t think the injury is as bad as first thought – if I recall correctly, they were thinking the labrum was shredded, but I think it was just inflammation and that there was a chance he’d return to game action, which he did.
However, I think it makes sense the Indians aren’t going to push Bryson too hard to finish off this season. Granted, Lake County is in the postseason, but it’s not worth risking further injury to Bryson’s shoulder just to have another strong reliever on Lake County’s postseason roster. If there was any doubt about Bryson’s health, that’s likely why he’s not pitching now.
Still, while that may not be good in the short-term, it doesn’t mean an offseason of rest won’t make him 100% or close to it for next season, especially if it was inflammation as I think the article suggested (the article was one of the more recent ones on Lastoria’s site, but I don’t have the link handy – if I have the chance, I’ll add it later). It’s better to shut him down now and not risk further injury than push him and perhaps have a long-term injury that might prevent him from being ready to go at the beginning of the 2009 season.
I agree that Bryson is important to that deal – Bryson has the makings of a good back-end reliever, if not possible closer, and with a player of CC’s magnitude, even if LaPorta turns out to be as great as expected (and that might be a bit unrealistic, as LaPorta may only turn out to be “pretty good,”) you’d still want a little more for arguably one of the best pitchers the Indians have ever had in their history, especially in their recent history (say the past 30 years or so).
Just my 2 cents.

Hello again Jay,
Here is the link to the article I was referring to.
Also, I had the details incorrect – sorry about that.
The Indians and Bryson thought that the rotator cuff was damaged, but tests showed that he only had a partial tear of his labrum and rotator cuff. After getting three weeks off to rest and strengthen the shoulder, he was expected to make an appearance or two in the final days of Lake County’s season.
Again, I think the Indians are probably erring on the side of caution in regard to Bryson and the postseason. It’s likely, like any professional player would, you’re going to try harder to do the very best you can in the postseason, even at Low-A, and the Indians probably fear that Bryson could injure himself doing that, much like Adam Miller did in that one Spring Training in front of the Indians’ brass, so I think the Indians are playing on the cautious side and making sure Bryson doesn’t get put in that situation.
That doesn’t mean he won’t be 100% and ready to go for the beginning of 2009, so I think we should take a “wait-and-see” approach and not read too much into thinking that Bryson will be dealing with a long-term injury at this point.
Just my 2 cents.

One note: Bryson himself has said how eager he is to face the Power in the playoffs, so it would seem to suggest that he may see some action.

We’ll see.
ifan, I don’t really buy the “cautious” argument, because they did bring him back for one game. He had a whole month off, that’s enough not to worry about his being overworked. If he were healthy right now, he’d be getting used.
Having said that, the fact that he pitched at all this quickly does suggest that it isn’t as bad as initially suggested.

It was feared going into the tests that he had seriously damaged his rotator cuff, but as it turns out he only had a partial tear of his labrum and rotator cuff.
Since when are partial rotator cuff and labrum tears not serious?

well since he made it back to action (i.e. throwing on the side, bullpen session, plus an appearance in a game) I think that adds up to a non-serious injury. I’d defer to those around here with medical backgrounds to comment further though.

Since forever, according to this article, an amazing 1 in 36 pitchers diagnosed with a torn labrum between 1999 and 2004 returned to their previous level.
Meaning we’re left to hope that Bryson = Rocky Biddle

W.C. recently suggested that article is now badly outdated and that the prognosis for labrum tears is not as bleak as it once wasy.

Problem is, even if it’s only one-tenth as bleak, it still sucks — 28% recovery rate rather than 2.8%.

my initial instinct was to doubt hoynes as this had not come up here as a clause of the trade. if hoynes has accurate information, then this seems like a very important stipulation and one that i would be surprised to see agreed to by shapiro.
and why/how has this only been learned now … ?
