Adam Dunn
Ok, I know none of us are sold on Big Ben in Left, so doesn't it make sense to sign Adam Dunn? He'd do so much for this team, it's not even funny. A big bat w/leadership and versatility who could take the load off of Hafner and allow PRONK to return under Dunn's shadow.
If only we can find teams to give Kobayashi and Dellucci away to, b/c we wouldn't need anything in return. We'd have $7 mil/year and could possibly sign Dunn for less ($8-9 mil per year) but for longer (3-4 years) than any team on the market.
(I know someone's gonna comment on Dunn's defense and strikeouts)

I think it is not a parody. It appears that he/she posted the same idea in the comments section on cleveland.com after Terry Pluto’s latest Terry’s Talkin’. Where is it more appropriate, one wonders?

I can’t believe that no one has thought of this before.
But what about all the strikeouts? I don’t know if I want that kind of drain in our lineup. How are our baserunners going to move up? Lord knows he’s not much of a bunter.
Il faut d'abord durer.
If they would have signed 9 of him last year, they would have reached that 1,000 milestone that BTN figured was a sure thing.
*According to the Baseball Musings Lineup Analysis — one of my favorite toys — a whole team of 2008 Adam Dunns would average 6.67 runs per game — so that’s 1,080 runs per season.

I’m more sold on Ben in left than Garko at first. League average production in left is excusable, below average at first is simply inexcusable. I don’t have a solution just extremely frustrated.
I’d say the heaviest odds are between June and September of 2009 depending of course on performance/need.

Is it weird I’m more anxious for Michael Brantley?
by rockemsockem on Jan 13, 2009 10:07 PM EST up reply actions
No. On the surface they have about the same timetable for the majors—at least in terms of what they’re capable of—but I’m guessing LaPorta is going to make it up first. I’d bet a lot on that because A) Brantley is younger and probably won’t be treated in any kind of hurry, B) I can see the team needing some power and wanting a player who can also rotate at first, but I’m not sure I envision a scenario where Shapiro/Wedge want to inject speed into a corner outfield spot.
This is just off the top of my head. Jay or Adam could lay the hammer any moment now.
Steel Nick
He is? In what way exactly?

Yeah not even close. I just love the fact that a 21 yo gets on base like he does(AA!). I don’t know what the scouting reports say but you would figure he could develop some sort of power. Maybe an ISO around .100 would suffice if you’re getting on base like he does. Consider me a Brantley enthusiast.

Well, fellas … looks like we got another fan here who doesn’t know about the Most Important Stat for evaluating prospects …
It’s a little strange, looking at his last two years, to note that his BB rate actually went DOWN from 07 (13) to 08 (10.3) in AA, even while his OBP went up almost 50 points (.345 to .392).
And while we’re at it, a ban to the three individuals above who didn’t give sarcastic answers. For shame.

Well, everyone is quite hospitable these days, huh?
Hello, TF23. Welcome. The general non-response you’re getting is due to:
1-Shapiro’s repeated statements that all the money is spent.
and
2-The fact that Dunn has been talked about, a lot, on this site. Here’s a good place to start if you’re looking for the general opinion.
And the fact that we can’t just “give away” Kobayashi and Dellucci.

Mark Shapiro is on the phone with another general manager. In the manner of Bob Newhart, you can only hear Shapiro’s side of the conversation:
No, seriously, we’ll just give them to you….No, we don’t want anything back, you can just have them – no prospects, not even a few bats – you can just have them….Yes, I know they’re expensive, but you’ve got money, right? …Well, we’d like to play our prospects, too – that’s why they’re available….No, we can’t pay any of their salary- that’s why we’re making this special offer…I’ve been authorized by management to throw in a case of Snuggies – they come in handy for those April snow games…That’s still not enough?….No, we will not ‘throw in’ Jensen Lewis or Kelly Shoppach… C’mon, Neil, Jason Michaels worked out for you last year, right? You owe me, Dellucci’s got all kinds of veteran leadership potential and Kobayashi will provide you 50 decent innings out of your bullpen at a fairly reasonable price…No, I’m sure your Steelers playoff tickets were fantastic and I don’t want to talk about the Browns – nobody wants to talk about the Browns. Neil, I’m talking about just GIVING you two major league players here for free! free!… Well, sure, you’d have to pay them, but other than that they’re absolutely free! Neil? Neil? You there, Neil? Neil?…….

That deal was done if Shap had only offered the Slap Chop. Snuggies are overrated.
Still the local "Barfield Bounces Back Believer" and confident that there's still a lot of Pronk in Hafner. Oh, and for all the love of Cliffy, there's still a Sleepy Kitten inside.
Ah, but Snuggies are inexpensive enough that one really could buy them by the case. And let’s not forget the book light.

This phone conversation never took place.
How was Huntington expected to pick up the phone while lounging under a blanket if he didn’t already have his very own Snuggie? Blankets can be so goshdarned restrictive!

You forgot Shapiro’s second attempt.
“You’re interested Dan?… Wow! I didn’t know you’d be so excited. Of course! It’s my pleasure… Just Kobayashi? Fine. Fine. One’s better than none… I had no idea you needed someone like him so desperately… We’re friends, this is what friends are for… Gosh. I’ve never heard you gush so excitedly… ‘Seventh inning stretch’?… Wait…. Hold on… Dan… Dan!… Yes, that WOULD be a real crowd pleaser. I mean, who wouldn’t like to let a fan challenge him? But I think there’s been some confusion… Yes, confusion… Hold on… I’m talking about the RELIEVER Kobayashi… Dan?… Are you there Dan?”

Dunn is a DH, 40 hr and 100 rbi tons of strikeouts and walks, we really do not need him, we still need more pitching, not more hitting.
Fan in Texas
I would take more of either. You can’t have too much hitting or too much pitching.
The argument isn’t whether or not we could use Dunn. Shapiro would sign him in a heartbeat if he could, I’m sure. The argument is whether or not we have the money for him, and Shapiro has already said we don’t.

Why don’t we just trade Dellucci and Garko to the Royals for Soria? I hear they need a first baseman and an outfielder.
Besides, the Royals haven’t spent any money on bad contracts this offseason on players like Kyle Farnsworth, Willie Bloomquist, or Mike Jacobs. Oh, wait…
I think “need a first baseman and an outfielder” usually means “need a DECENT first baseman a DECENT outfielder.” Tell me, would you give up Soria?
Steel Nick
No, but I wouldn’t have traded Asdrubal Cabrera for Eduardo Perez, either. And isn’t that the basic backstory of all outlandish trade proposals, that someone may once again be that stupid?
As an aside, does anyone in the world actually call Asdrubal “Toaster”?
I’m gonna go out on a limb and predict 40 HRs for Dunn this year.

Adam Dunn is
1) the left handed version of Richie Sexson
2) the ghost of Dave Kingman
3) another one of the unemployed
4) The Nationals Savior
Baseball fans are junkies, and their heroin is the statistic. - Robert S. Wieder
Whereas Sexson isn’t a perfect comp for Dunn, I think Dunn’s career playing out like Sexson’s from this point on is a distinct possibility.
Congratulations, you picked out the biggest difference between the two players. Sexson had the better batting average of the two, but it didn’t quite make up for the difference in walk rates.
There are some similarities, though. They are both huge guys. Dunn is listed at 6’6, 240. Sexson is 6’8, 237. I’m not sure what the relationship between size and injuries is, but I would intuitively think they might be more succeptible to breaking down earlier. Like Dunn, Sexson didn’t have many injuries prior to his age 29 season.
They rely a lot on their power stroke. Sexson’s ISO in his age 26-28 seasons (.276, .225, .276). Dunn’s ISO the last three years (.256, .290, .277).
In Sexson’s age 29 season, he was hurt for almost the entire season. In his age 30 season, he posted his best OPS+ of his career (144, his ISO was .278, but it was also in a move to the AL.)He followed that season up with a OPS+ of 117. His ISO dropped to .240, but he also suffered a substantial dip in his walk rate. Finally, in his age 32 season, he was an ineffective player when on the field. He also missed time for an injury.. His ISO now was a mere .194, though to be fair, he suffered some bad luck on balls in play.
I think there is a distinct possibility that Dunn’s next four years could look something like that. Injured, very good season, decent season, and completely ineffective, if not in that order. Of course, Dunn may very well remain healthy and hit 40 bombs for the next four season.
Dunn’s list of comparable through age 28 is pretty impressive:
1. Darryl Strawberry (920)
2. Jose Canseco (906)
3. Harmon Killebrew (902) *
4. Rocky Colavito (895)
5. Reggie Jackson (889) *
6. Troy Glaus (867)
7. Tom Brunansky (865)
8. Barry Bonds (861)
9. Roger Maris (859)
10. Boog Powell (859)
Sexson’s comps through 28 is less impressive, and certainly different:
1. Cecil Fielder
2. Jay Buhner
3. Hank Sauer
4. Paul Konerko
5. Danny Tartabull
6. Matt Stairs
7. Tony Clark
8. Troy Glaus
9. Pat Burrell
10. David Ortiz
