This Vietnam thing isn’t really working out, think I’ll go play football?
Oh.

Hopefully it would involve a violent collision with Ray Lewis and Ed Reed followed by a quick trip to the orthopedic unit.
I think he could take one of them out that badly, I bet the other would be able to walk off though.

I can’t support positive comments about the Ravens, I am sorry. I am perfectly fine with your Celtics fanship, but rooting for Ed Reed and Ray Lewis in any way is too much for me
Damned if you do this weekend. I hate rooting for the Cardinals and/or Eagles. What a blegh postseason.
Steel Nick
Seriously. Four absolutely reprehensible teams to root for. I officially don’t care about the rest of the NFL playoffs.

See, I actually don’t mind rooting for the Cardinals or Eagles. I would really like to see either team win it all
I’m rooting for the Eagles and Steelers… but man it would suck if we have to hear on and on…
a) All-Penn Super Bowl
b) Phillies and now Eagles
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
Are you excited about the Eagles?
One good reason I could think of for the Eagles to win is that Philly fans would become like Boston fans, they couldn’t complain about sports for twenty years or so.
Philly fans will always complain, it’s an exceptionally obnoxious and ignorant fan base. “Passionate,” yes, but there is a serious deficit of class and nuance in the sports culture here.
Having said that, I just don’t see why anyone would find an all-PA anything all that objectionable. It just seems innocuous to me. What did PA ever do to anybody?
my vote is for the Eagles at this point. i can’t in good faith root for the Steelers or the Ravens, and Phoenix is just such a terrible place. and i have a lot of philly friends and generally like the town, so Philly it is. Of course I think Philly might be the worst of the four remaining teams.
I think the Eagles are pretty underrated. I don’t know why it took the benching to get McNabb motivated, but when he decides he wants to scramble and focus, he can move that team up and down the field. Westbrook is extremely dangerous when healthy. Their front 7 has been terrific at stopping the run all year, and Asante Samuel has finally decided to start making plays like he did in NE. They are very capable of beating the remaining teams
ugh. my experience with phoenix may be tainted by primarily experiencing it from the perspective of near retirement age people living in sun city (my parents), but it’s hot, has terrible air pollution, is a never-ending string of strip malls, and while it is surrounded by mountains, I find them to be the most unattractive mountains i’ve ever seen. i also can’t ever fully get past why so many people have decided to live in the middle of the desert with no water.
Well I guess my experience was a bit better than yours.
Yes, it is silly to have that large of a town in the desert, but I’d much rather live in a place like that than in Northern Michigan, Canada, etc.
Yes it is unbearably hot from May-Sept, but the rest of the year is just fine. And to me, there is nothing like riding around in the summer evening when it is 90 degrees at nite. Whereas in the North, you may have a decent spring and fall (usually surprisingly short), but then you have the muggy, sticky summers and brutally cold winters when you can’t even leave the house.
Sun City itself is a retirement community yes, but Phoenix is a normal city, while Scottsdale and Tempe are very nice as well.
Not to mention, it is very easy to navigate Phoenix since it is a square grid with a freeway around that square. Not like many older cities where you have to know each neighborhood because the streets all dead end or change names every other block.
Different strokes for different folks I guess.
but the traffic sucks. and those new speed cameras on the highway are brutal. i’ll fully admit it’s just not my style, though. i like buildings with multiple stories and I like the color green. and water. i will, however, happily be returning the last week of March to catch a little spring training.
You’ll have to excuse most of the people here; if the city isn’t an old, rust-belt city, then it’s a hellhole.

Ah Brad – I’ll bet you went to OSU, didn’t you? No, a city has to have a little culture – a little flavor – some personallity. Phoenix has little, if any of this stuff. Told you before, luv Houston – it’s got all of that stuff and, no rust!!
I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about it.

I think Houston came up in our discussion of the nation’s best looking ladies a few years back.

It takes time for a city to develop culture. Newer big cities, such as Columbus, Indianapolis, Phoenix, etc., don’t have the history of cities like Cleveland and Chicago to develop the culture. Give them a couple more generations and maybe they will.
To speak of Columbus specifically, I know it doesn’t have the history and culture of Cleveland, and it probably never will. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad place to live. I guess it’s all about what you want in a city, and people obviously have different preferences.

I don’t know, I tend to think these things take hold relatively quickly, based on the character of the first critical mass of residents, which itself is shaped by industry. The core cultural institutions of Cleveland and Chicago generally date back well over 100 years.
I see what you’re saying. Columbus and Indy will never be like Cleveland or Chicago because they’re different types of cities built by different types of industries. Of course, the manufacturing industry that Cleveland was built on is disappearing across the country, so it’s impossible for newer big cities to have the same ‘feel’ as Cleveland.
What I meant was that as Columbus grows, things like COSI and the Columbus Symphony might grow and gain popularity or notoriety. These kinds of things are what I think most people mean when they say cities like Columbus lack culture. And they take time to grow and get established as the city grows.

This is all my rationale too, except I can’t justify rooting for Philly. They got theirs, dammit. I guess I take Arizona by default, but either of the NFC teams over either of the AFC teams.

I’m slowly heading that way. It’s sad, because I think football is an excellent sport in its own right, but I can’t stand the hype around NFL of NCAA anymore, it’s sickening.

I can’t tell the difference between any of the NFL teams. Except, of course the Cowboys – who are a bunch of drug-crazed child molesters. I picked Reed and Lewis cuz they’re the hardest hitting secondary duo I could think of. If you could think of another coupla guys who hit as hard as these two feel free to substitute.
The best way to tell the difference is by looking at the helmets — they all have different pictures on them. (If you see a team that doesn’t have anything on the helmet, that’s the Browns. They’re from Cleveland.)

Brad I know the Browns, the team that plays in Cleveland now is not the Browns. They are the St. Louis Cardinals disguised as the Browns. It takes more than laundry and a helmet to be the Browns.
I know, Chuck. I was just trying to be funny.

Haha — I’m just watching my student assistance period now (like a study hall), so I have time to argue about LeBron if anyone wants to join in.
I just want to say LeBron looks damn good in a Browns uniform. I could just picture Brady Quinn throwing the ball up to him in the end zone while he outleaps and outmuscles defenders for the ball.

I love LeBron and all, but if he reacts on the football field to a hit the way he does on the court there are going to be a lot of delay of games while he dabs at his lip to check for blood.
Steel Nick
Since he’d be wearing a helmet and plenty of padding I doubt that would be a problem. I’m pretty sure LeBron would be giving more hits than taking them on a football field.

Compared to other NBA superstars, both current and historical, I don’t think LeBron is bad at all in this regard. There are things he does that are truly astonishing, and it’s understandable to me that sometimes even his own jaw drops.

my brother tackled him when they played in highschool. my brother’s like 5’6" soaking wet. did i use that right? he said lebron wasn’t the fastest guy out there, but that size and strength wise, he was a man amongst boys.
Now though, his speed is almost unparalled in athletic history for a man of his size. I would say only Bo Jackson was faster for a person of their respective sizes
i’m sure he actually was one of the fastest on the field. i’m just telling you that’s not what my brother found stood out the most.
I saw him play football once. SVSM didn’t throw to him very often because of the injury risks I think, but they did target him 3 times which resulted in 3 TDs and a 21-14 victory
That’s a damn good TD/reception ratio.

Pretty much what the Buckeyes did with Terrelle Pryor in the Fiesta Bowl, only LeBron is taller and much stronger.
