Omar a Ranger
Omar Vizquel has accepted a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers. He's apparently to be mentor to Elvis Andrus, the shortstop prospect that the Rangers are moving Michael Young to third base for.

Considering that he’s there to fill a mentorship role for SS Elvis Andrus, I’m guessing this is more of a sign that Omar is beginning to make the shift to coaching as opposed to wanting to keep playing as a utility guy. I’m sure the Rangers will play Omar at short as little as possible so as to not piss off Michael Young any more than they already have by shifting him to 3rd to make way for the unproven Andrus.

I’ll bet there is a lot of sadness in the cleveland.com forums over this. Cleveland missing out on Omar is going to cost them a shot at a championship — we could have signed him and moved Peralta to third!!!

It’s worth pointing out that our last two championships came with player-managers at the helm. Ahem.

Except in ’48, that guy won the MVP too.

Wedge should play first base, then. Like Frank Robinson, he can put himself in when the game is on the line. Unlike Frank Robinson, he can ground weakly to third.
I found some comments from Omar about the move to Texas. He’s never played any position other than shortstop so it will be interesting to see if he actually makes it as a utility player.

Omar actually played an inning in right field in one strange game back in 1999. From what I can recall, he was giddy about getting to play a different position for an inning.
That game was one of the three notorious 8-run comebacks the Indians pulled off that season, though I think it was the only one where the entire comeback was accomplished in one inning.
