Best Outfield Arms of 2008
Includes the quote...
"And if you're the kind of person who can't stand perfection in others, well, you'll be pleased to know that Grady Sizemore, who seems to be good at everything, is quite noodle-armed. This was his worst season to date, but he's been below average every year of his career. "
Frankie and BenFran were both a third of the way down their respective lists.

The stats guys have a long way to go to get me to give up my preference for scouting opinions in evaluating this tool. I will say that this report is more convincing than any other statistical analysis I’ve seen.
I love a good OF arm.
It’s fun to watch. But can we agree that “arm strength” is the least important of the 5 tools? That tool list needs a re-write.
Steel Nick
Agreed. What would yours be?
Power (SLG)
Eye (OBP)
Glove (range)
Speed (steals, 1st to 3rd, etc)
But then what? Agility (i.e. reaction time)? Domino skills?
Burn on, big river, burn on...

There isn’t a stat in the world that isn’t going to convince me that Ankiel is ‘worse’ than Kotsay, Upton, Kemp, Vlad, Lucwick, Pence, etc…
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
wait… did I say that right? Brick…?

Seriously, I hope every baseball fan saw the clips of him gunning down runners between second and third from the CF warning track. Amazing.
Carmona for Cy Young 2009
Glaus didn’t even need to do much. Those throws would have landed within 6 inches of the base without an infielder even there.

wow. ankiel is huge arm.
Anti-Ben Fran before it was cool.

Totally agree. Kills and holds are dependent on more than just the outfielder, so I think this model is pretty crude. I feel like this one could be settled in a good, old-fashioned high-school-baseball-tryout-throwoff.
To expand my opinion of model holes: pitching staff strength, divisional opponents offensive strength, divisional opponents run tendencies, park factor (adjusted for but still imperfect), game situation – plus, what is an “outfield arm”? Accurate, strong, or mesh of the two? Also – how well an on outfielder fields a ball has a lot to do with the runner’s decision.
yea i mean, what if a runner is a freaking moron and decides not to go to third when Ibanez is throwing from the deep corner of right field?
or what if Skinner is coaching first and third against all the teams these OFs are playing against?

I can’t believe we’re still going with Skinner.

i’ve always known grady has a weak arm. but, uhm, i’m pretty sure it was better last year than it ever was.
