About Fantasy Baseball
Tim from McCovey Chronicles' comment section here. Hate "spamming" but I thought the community here might be interested in this:
My company (Associated Content) is launching a comprehensive fantasy baseball preview, and I wanted to invite anyone interested to register at the site and take part. The individual preview articles (by position, team, category) are paid -- not a ton, but something -- and you will have an additional clip to point to if you're interested in expanding your writing experience. Plus, it should be fun; in the end, you're writing about baseball. We'll give you a lot of leeway in how you write them; we won't be sticklers for following the titles to the letter.
The claims are going fast, so check it out. Sign up, go to the "Call for Content" area, look for the baseball assignments, claim them and get paid to publish about fantasy baseball. Thanks!

Rotoworld is also hiring people to write about Fantasy Baseball if this is the sort of thing anyone is interested in.
I have no feel for how popular fantasy baseball is. I assumed nobody played it yet apparently it’s a growth industry in a down economy.

You assumed nobody played fantasy baseball? Why? Don’t you notice all the fantasy rankings and fantasy articles on every major sports website?

I just thought it was an extremely distant second to football. I assumed somebody did but not on a level that required all of these websites devoted to it.
by afh4 on Jan 23, 2009 7:40 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
it likely is a distant second, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it doesn’t warrant the attention it receives.
fantasy football is perfect for the casual fan. it requires a couple hours in august for prep (if that) and a draft, and then many casual fans spend about 30 minutes per week making moves or setting lineup before the weekend.
baseball literally requires daily monitoring. no room for casual fantasy baseball players with baseball’s schedule.

Haha as someone who formerly wrote for fantasyhockey.com, trust me that people are still gaga for just about any fantasy sport.

I mean, there’s fantasy golf. And NASCAR. And Olympics (but only every four years).

Are there Olympic keeper leagues?

I think Michael Phelps is clearly the number one draft pick in Olympic keeper leagues.

I actually played fantasy NASCAR for a few years.

It’s pretty big. I mean, ESPN.com has at least one regular writer who covers Fantasy Baseball exclusively.
It’s also a major driver of Baseball Prospectus premium subscriptions — those PECOTA pages get a lot more views by fantasy players than by other fans, I would bet.

This proves nothing but I know that fantasy baseball was first.

Damn, I’d love to do this, I’ve been on the lookout for gigs like this. Too bad I don’t know squat about fantasy baseball.

I have a fantasy baseball team, yet I’ll be the first to admit that along with old mainstream media, it retards the acceptance of sabermetric stats.

I finally managed to convince my league to switch from BA to OBP last season. It was moderately difficult because a lot of FLB players don’t understand it—just like the rest of the population.
But I was under the impression that a lot of early sabermetricians were driven by the desire to better model future performance in order to get a competitive advantage in fantasy baseball.

Should have had a “Me” after the quote. As in myself. As in this applies to me. My brevity was lost.

Is it too early to get the fantasy thread going? I mean, I ready for the season to start and to get things organized…
I’d be willing to manage a traditional H2H AL-only 12 team daily league, as I’ve done in the past. I also enjoyed DaytonDogg‘s obscenely large mulit-category league last year and would join it. Anyone up for starting a keeper league somewhere (presuming Yahoo doesn’t allow it again this year).

I would love to join any keeper league, doesn’t matter what the format is. I missed any leagues that were started last year, but I did win the football league in ‘07 so I’m ready for more competition.

Yes, that league was a little outrageous, but it was fun. I’ll probably set up another yahoo league with some interesting settings, but maybe not so all over the place.
I’m not crazy about the AL-only thing, but I’d join it.
I’d love a keeper league, I just wish Yahoo would do it. From my experience in fantasy football, I don’t like ESPN’s set up for fantasy sports at all.

I do like Yahoo’s the best, but I like ESPN’s better than most. I’ve done some at CBS and Fox sports sites, and they’re both terrible. So if Yahoo won’t do a keeper league then I’d rather do ESPN. I think that’s what we did our fantasy football keeper league (although we lost many of the players the second year, though).
I’d also rather not do an AL-only league, but I’d join if that’s what people wanted.

Hmmm… I’d like to join a league with you guys… but…
1) I haven’t played FBB since 06 – my team was set up for a nice future until the league tanked … I’m thusly kinda lukewarm about FBB.
2) Yahoo’s is much better than ESPN.
3) I do not want a CBS or Foxsports account.
4) AL only turns me off.

Actually, it hasn’t been as long as I thought. ANd look how epic fail my pitching would have been in 08:
Willis
Millwood
Kennedy
Meche
Guthrie
Byrd
Franklin Morales … who?
Bannister
Owings
Mr. No-Hitter Anibal Sanchez
Cordero
Raffy-R
Raffy-L
Janssen
Ashamed to say… Blowsavski

Whatever else you do to it, you have to keep it insanely large. I loved having to manage a 35 player team and figure out which stats I needed to win a given week. Maybe it was easier because my team was beyond anything I could dream up. I enjoyed that…

by fwembt on Jan 25, 2009 12:34 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If we do a keeper league somewhere, my preferences would be for a H2H. I’d like it to be a ML universe with daily updates. But that’s just what I’d like. I’ll investigate ESPN since no one seems to like CBS or FOX. Doesn’t MLB.com do one too?

Well with a typical population, it’s hard to keep players without a chance of winning involved. A playoff system keeps a fixed percentage of owners in a position to win until the end of the year. A roto league can often erode to the point where only the top 2-3 teams have a chance to win, often with a long time left in the league.
Then again, this crowd isn’t completely typical.

I’m interested. I have a keeper league that I’ve been doing for about 8 years now, and it’s roto. I also do H2H during the year on yahoo. Whatever format everyone decides, I’ll be happy to play.

I think we had at least 3 leagues last year, I was in 2 of them. The one I put up included 2 or 3 non LGTers.
Once Yahoo gets their game up, I’ll start considering the format and make a fan-something on here.

Just kicking around the MLB.com site and there seemed to be a couple of cool free games to play from last year. The type of register for free and win a cool million type games. All you need to do is pick a player who’ll get a hit on that day and build up a 57-game hitting streak. One or two other ones too…
Dunno if they’ll bring them back – but I’m intrigued.
Oh, and fantasy starts over there sometime in Feb. Neither ESPN or Yahoo have anything up yet.
