Why does it bother you he signed with the Red Sox? It’s not like he’s a big name free agent who signed a massive contract.

Because I hate the Red Sox and I was sort of OK with Smoltz. I’m sort of OK with all NL players.
But, lord do I hate the Red Sox.

And obviously the “will the sox trade a young starter” talks will pick up again.
If Teagarden nets Bucholz, I’d imagine Shoppach would net Masterson.

God I would do a Shoppach-for-Buchholz swap. Shoppach+ as long as it’s reasonable.

I’d trade Shoppach for Bucholz in a second. Unfortunately I doubt the sox would agree to that trade when they could get Teagarden for that price.
I’m really concerned Shoppach is going to have a severe regression next year. Plus, I like young pre arb players.
Does anyone else get the feeling Shapiro has one more trade up his sleeve sometime before Opening Day?

With Smoltz not finishing his career with the Braves, I got to thinking…who was the last pitcher inducted into the Hall of Fame who spent his entire career with one team? I can name several positions players, but I can’t think of a recent pitcher.

Gibson, Palmer, and Drysdale are the most recent I can think of while doing a rudimentary search.

Ogden rules. He even wrote a poem “Sabathia:”

One end is moo, the other, milk.

And…looking at the list, two things:
1-Good god the Veterans committee gets busy.
3-Am I the only one who didn’t know that Fergie Jenkins was Canadian?
2-One team, by general election…
Hmm…
As Nick has just posted, it was Palmer in 1990 it looks like.

I was going to say Trevor Hoffman, but at one time he was a Florida Marlin. And of course, he’s moving on to another team as well.

For starters Roy Halladay has an outside shot. But he’s not a HOFer yet, and his contract is up after 2010.

3 – Really? Thought it was common knowledge. He was actually born about 45 minutes from here. Also played with the Globetrotters for what it’s worth.

He was so close to a one-team thing. I maintain an irrational desire for those.

Irrational and a-rational would be basically the same thing, I think.
You may be thinking that it’s not unreasonable, but it could still be irrational.

The way I’m thinking about it, an irrational conclusion is one made in a situation where reason would produce a different result; an arational conclusion is one made in a situation where reason doesn’t really apply. Loosely analogous to the distinction between immoral, where one bucks a moral system, and amoral, where one lives outside the moral system. I’m thinking that desires of this sort are a matter of taste (or something of that sort), and might not be subject to analysis.
But, y’know. Semantics.

How many years with Smoltz until Red Sox fans think that Smoltz should enter the Hall as a Sock?

it also require at least one column from Gammons on what a great influence Smoltz is in the Sox clubhouse

And then a subsequent Gammons column explaining that staying with one team really does mean something, but in this case, Smoltz is excused because blah blah blah and the Red Sox are like his new family because blah blah Pedroia blah…
And don’t even get me started on Bill Simmons.

So what’s your beef with Simmons? Does it have to do with his lack of reporting, analysis, humor, objectivity, insight, etc.?

Boston-centricity, probably.
It freaks me out how Simmons is 40-something but sounds like a 19-year-old.

I don’t like the Sox signing Penny, Smoltz, and Baldelli all on the cheap. Something tells me 2 out of the 3 of those work out for them pretty decently.
