Game 159: Red Sox 3, Indians 0

If this game were not a tuneup for Boston starter Jon Lester, the left-hander might have finished the game. Instead, he went 6.1, and let his bullpen finish the shutout. The Indians managed two hits against Lester, and one more against three Red Sox relievers.

The run of promising finales ended at three, as Carlos Carrasco struggled against Boston's patient lineup. To cap things off, he left the game after a line drive hit him flush just above his left knee. Carrasco had to be helped off the field, a rather bad ending to his first major-league stint. The 22-year-old started five games, and went more than five innings just once. It's tough to make a call on this young a pitcher after a month's worth of starts, but to me it would make sense to have him start 2010 in Columbus, have some success, and then bring him back to the majors.

The Indians have now lost 12 straight road games, tying a franchise record (1963 and 1991).

I’m thinking of betting the farm on tomorrow’s game. Sowers versus Matsuzaka? Could you find more of a lock?

I wouldn’t think you’d get very good odds.

Bet for the first 4 innings on the Tribe or a split and you’ll be a millionaire.

Carrasco didn’t look great pitching, but really did not look good being helped off the field

He couldn’t put any weight on his knee. Got hit on the inside of his (left?) knee.

I wouldn’t say he didn’t look great

Too bad “Eric Wedge” wasn’t a top search on May 18.

I only watched for the first few innings, but it seemed like Carrasco’s fastball was a few mph slower. Maybe he is trying to throw something with a bit more downward action on it?

Yeah, or movement of some kind. He’s got work to do.

I wonder how many times we’re gonna be on the wrong side of a three-hit shut out next?

Too many, but it doesn’t matter as management wrote off 2010 a few months ago. My ideal 2010 season will be a terrible first half, followed by dramatic improvement in the second half. The overall record would provide us a solid draft position, and the player development would suggest that we could compete in 2011.

I saw in the mlb network highlight reel, they showed Victor sitting behind the plate turn to Wedge in the dugout, give a chest pound salute to Wedge, and Wedge pointed back and gave the thumbs up and a big smile.

In the new Geico commercial, Marte sings "Let me be myself" on Wedge's front lawn (with the cavemen).

Yes, that was good to see. Lots of mutual respect there. See also these notes from Castro’s blog.

Martinez paid Wedge and his coaches a visit late last night, after the game. They ended up sitting in Wedge’s office talking for a couple hours. Wedge said it was a great, reflective conversation.

Here’s what Martinez had to say about playing for Wedge: “He made me a better player. Not only myself. He was a manager that made sure he got everybody ready to play the game. That’s big. He lets the players take care of things in the clubhouse. That’s something that’s great, too. Sometimes it’s hard to hear the truth, but he was a guy that’s going to tell you the truth. You’ve got to be a man to play this game, and he really helped me a lot.”

Didn’t Sawx pitchers give up like 12 HRs to TOR in their last series?

That’s because they dig playing for Cito.
