Johjima out. Another Cleveland/Seattle Trade Possible?
Pure speculation (and this article mentions nothing of a trade), but with Johjima out in Seattle, might Mark Shapiro be able trade Kelly Shoppach to Seattle? Shapiro has had great success with our recent Seattle trades after all...

Yeah, but Captain Z is now in charge of the Mariners. It won’t be quite as easy as the golden era when Bavasi was in charge.
Want out of Cleveland? Easy - mess with LeBron's entourage.

On the other hand, Bavasi never would have gone for Shoppach.
It will depend, I would guess, on what Z thinks of Shoppach’s defensive skills.

It would be a fair trade among two GMs that get along pretty well together. Shapiro likes working with those people.

I literally don’t know his name, only that it starts with Z.

Jack Zduriencik clearly knows nothing about playing the game, managing only three hits and three walks in 47 PA with the Appleton Foxes in 1973-74.

Interesting article. Cot’s makes no mention of an opt-out in his contract; I wonder if they’re not pretending it’s there just to help him save face. Few if any American players would opt out of a guaranteed deal and leave $10 million-plus on the table. It seems to me that Z must have made clear to him that a trade or even a demotion were on the table, and Johjima didn’t want to face what those scenarios would do to his standing in Japan. Also seems to me that the Japan League simply plays a much easier schedule in every respect.

i guess any contract has an implied opt-out if neither party wants to finish it.

I don’t think that’s really true. The CBA prevents players from agreeing to reduce the value of their contracts.

he may be “retiring,” which would allow him to forfeit any remaining guaranteed dollars.

maybe cot’s just didn’t have the opt-out because it wasn’t a traditional one. more of a “can go back to japan whenever he flippin’ wants” clause.

That seems more likely to fly with the MLBPA.

Ugh. I think this guy has enough talent to warrant his own nickname. This “2.0” crud is very 90s. How about Dice-2-K instead?
