Indians get permission from Angels to speak to Ron Roenicke about managerial job
The LA Times is reporting that the Tribe has received permission from the Angels to speak to bench coach Ron Roenicke about their managerial job. It is unclear when Roenicke, who has spent 10 seasons with the Angels under Manager Mike Scioscia, six as a third base coach and the last four as the bench coach, would interview for the position, or if he has already been interviewed. If Roenicke were to get the job, he would be the third coach off Scioscia's staff to be hired as a manager, following Joe Maddon (Tampa Bay) and Bud Black (San Diego).

Sure seems that way now…

seems like the simplest explanation, though from the other day:
GM Mark Shapiro met with reporters today, following Manny Acta’s formal interview for the Tribe’s managerial vacancy, and revealed that four candidates are in the hunt for the job.
Finally, there is another candidate whose identity Shapiro did not reveal. Shapiro just said that this candidate currently has other responsibilities — the implication being that he is still involved in the postseason.
if there was only one guy, Roenicke fits that description. if they’ve added another since, then fine. but i read it as mattingly was jusy an incorrect guess.
If so, did they float Mattingly’s name merely to guage fan/media response?

I don’t know if the Indians do much floating. If I were them, floating Mattingly’s name, it would be as a distraction. Let them fixate on Mattingly while we get our work done.
Have the Indians really floated Mattingly’s name? They said Mattingly was in the original round of phone interviews, and Castro put him in the Group of Four, but Shapiro has always declined comment on Mattingly.
When I say float, I mean not denying it. They did come out and say that Fryman was not a finalist, and I forget who now, but one other guy who phone interviewed but was not a finalist. The media has all but assumed it’s Mattingly, and the tribe has not commented one way or the other except that he had a phone interview.

Giving someone a beard would be an awesome but not very useful superpower.

The article linked still mentions Mattingly as a candidate. I like Roenicke, kind of surprised he wasn’t mentioned earlier.
I really know very little about Roenicke as a coach/manager. He managed in the minors for five years in the Dodgers and Giants organizations, winning Manager of the Year in the California League in 1995 and the Texas League in 1997. I know he was in the running for the Mariners job before Hargrove was hired there. But that’s about it.
i don’t like that idea. if we had a bad month or two the fans would be screaming for hargrove to take over.. im not a fan of a possible replacement manager as the bench coach
Who else is thinking that next year’s opening day crowd is going to resemble the opening day in the movie Major League?
If the fans were screaming paying attention, that would be an improvement.

That would certainly create a leadership vacuum.

I wonder if Jhonny would notice.

i wrote about a few on my site yesterday. i just think he is being overlooked. there really isn’t a standout candidate in my opinion after farrell passed.
I’m sure this is a professional courtesy. Not interviewing your AAA manager would be an insult and pretty much an invitation for him to look for a new organization. Especially after your short season manager got floated.
He also looks like the default candidate. If they don’t want or can’t afford Valentine, Acta goes to Houston, Roenicke whatever……
We know Torey will take the job and he doesn’t appear to be on anyone else’s list. If the search crashes they can turn to him and avoid the embarrassment of starting over and having it look like nobody wants to manage the Indians.
This is not to suggest that Lovullo doesn’t have credentials, but I think this is his path to the job.
Also overlooked: Skinner. That is kind of a head-scratcher to me, although it does point up how serious they are about getting an outside perspective.
Roenicke sure is an interesting candidate, especially if you consider the Angels philosophy on hitting. I’d love to hear that part of the interview!
Well, Olney just said Mattingly is the frontrunner for the job. He couldn’t be wrong. He just couldn’t.
Steel Nick
that’s just the only one he’s heard of.

October 24, 2007: ESPN says Mattingly leading candidate for the Yankees job. He’s always the front-runner, until he’s not.
He needs a little shake and bake!

Wasn’t ex-Indian John Lowenstein his platoon partner?

Re: The Mattingly discussions above, according to this AP report on ESPN the Tribe is bringing both Mattingly and Roenicke in for interviews next week. The article is about Lovullo and how much he wants to graduate to the bigs.
I just wanted to believe.
