Acta, Garner or Mills to Manage Astros. Decision coming soon.
Houston is going to decide by early next week between Phil Garner, Manny Acta and Brad Mills.
Acta has more allegiances towards Houston so he will take that one if offered. Kind of a battle for his services going on right now.

maybe the 2nd time will be the charm?

Who do we root for? Mills, so the Red Sox lose a coach?

Not Acta, I think. I’d like Acta’s position with our team to be determined by our team.

Well, of course. I had assumed that was a given.

My answer was going to be longer and I forgot to add the rest. I don’t think it matters either way as long as it’s “not Acta.” Mills seems like the better hire, at least to me. But I don’t know how much I need to root against the Astros as an Indians fan.
Unless, like you posited, the departure of Mills hurts the Red Sox.

Brian McTaggart says there are four finalists: Acta, Mills, Garner and Dave Clark.

There is no comment in the above piece that speculates as to what decision Acta will make. If there is another article that lists this, please link it. Otherwise, it just goes from your review of the article to your personal speculation, which can be misleading.

i have read that acta holds that job close because he spent 16 years in the organization. i’ll do some digging later to try and find it and post the link.

While its true that Acta has made statements to the effect that he is excited about the Astros opportunity due to his history with them, there isn’t a quote anywhere that says he will definitively take the job if offered.
I wasn’t trying to be snarky, but it is your opinion that he will take the job, and the fact that you posted your opinion inside a general summary of the article is misleading.
Just saying.

“It’s amazing, because as I mentioned, I owe them everything, including my wife,” he said. “I met her while playing in the Minor Leagues for them. That being said, I understand what the process is all about. They have to do what’s best for the Astros, and I’m happy to be part of it.”
That sounds like “Why do I have to go through a process? Hire me on the spot!”
I get your point, and you’re right. But it seems to be splitting hairs, in this particular instance.

In Houston, we’d have had the spectacle of the manager trying to explain sabermetrics to the GM. Clearly, they needed Acta more than we did but, naturally, weren’t smart enough to know.

People keep talking about the extra year on the Indians’ contract offer, but I wonder how much of the process was Shapiro vs. Wade. After all, Acta knows from experience what it’s like to work with an idiot as a GM.

Yea, I agree. Acta admits to spending his off time following the Indians, and my gut says he liked some of the pieces he saw in place.

For all we know, the Houston offer was for the same amount of money, but what Acta values at this point in his career is an extended trial. While managers often get fired with a year left on their contracts, it is rare to fire a manager before the end of his FIRST contract.

I’ve seen a few pictures of Acta in the dugout, standing tall, arms crossed, with sunglasses on. In the back of my mind I think, Wouldn’t it be funny if he just came across as a total badass? He’ll laugh and pat you on the back and tip you $200 for bringing him his coat, but if look at him wrong you might just disappear forever. And now the hat. This has only reinforced the idea.
