This is tough news for all of us at LGT. Let's hope Steve gets the treatment he needs.

I’m going to do a little a preemptive moderating here.
There will be no discussion in this thread (or any other) of the various women in Phillips’ life.
None.
Yes, by all means talk about Phillips the ESPN personality, but please do not go into his personal life.
Those fake GM conferences that Phillips did on Sportscenter a few years back may have been some of the worst and most pathetic things I’ve seen on TV, and certainly contributed to my near cold-turkey separation from the show.
Yeah those were ridiculous. Almost as bad as the awful “Who’s Now” contest they did a couple years ago.

I can only speak for myself, but I will certainly NOT be seeing that, in any way.

When I saw the headline, I really thought he was fired for being a bad analyst.

Yeah, but even pious types like Jimmy Carter got the lust. In law it’s all about intent.

Chuck, what the hell are you talking about?

Not sure how old you are, MTF, but the ref is (kinda) explained here. It was taken from an interview with Playboy, if memory serves.

Thanks for all the responses, but this was what I “what the hell”d:

The act matters. I’ll just leave it go at that.

I find it hard to believe that any half-literate American boy hasn’t heard the “lusted in my heart” line for Mr Carter.

I haven’t, and I’m at least half-literate

I guess I was about eight years old at the time, but you’re right, it was a famously repeated quote for 20-25 years. I’m not surprised, however, that people who were not alive during his presidency haven’t heard of the quote.
Lots of old people think all the cultural currency from their earlier lives is the cultural currency and they are baffled when young people do not know what it is. At the same time, lots of these same old people are totally oblivious to what is actually cultural currency now and even actively scorn it (Jon and Kate, Lauren Conrad, etc).
And, to pre-empt, yes I would say Carter’s interview is about as culturally important as Jon and Kate. It was a different kind of pulp but it was still just pulp.
It may not be up there with “four score and seven years ago” or “I regret that I have but one life to give” but jeez, it’s got little, if anything to do with being alive when it occurred.
And it’s pretty amazing that you would put Jon and Kate and Lauren Carter on the same plane as a former president. Now if you’d made the parrellel to Tiny Tim or Monty Rock, then I could see your point. But really Jon and Kate = Jimmy Carter? That seems like quite the stretch.

A former President is much more important than some reality stars, but that doesn’t mean every single one of his quotes is important.
Jon and Kate = Jimmy Carter
I think it’s obvious Andrew wasn’t saying that.

While this is certainly true, I think it’s important to become a student of history. I like knowing about what went on, even culturally, before I was born. That’s not to say you can know everything, of course. I probably watch more TCM than other 37 year olds I know.
I’m inclined to agree with Chuck on the ‘equality’ claim. Presidential quotes trump reality show stars on the cultural significance meter over time. Doesn’t necessarily make it right, but I think that’s how history works.
Also! I actively scorn Jon and Kate because they were idiots for prostituting their children on television, not for their cultural significance or lack thereof.
BTW, Chuck — it’s Lauren Conrad, not Lauren Carter. Sheesh.
Wait 'til next millennium!
I hope that whomever replaces Phillips can give us the same kind of quality analysis. Who am I kidding? The man is irreplaceable.
I feel like Valentine might be just the man.

I don’t know much about the Twins, but I know less about the Tigers. After I’m done calling this game, though, I’m willing to do whatever it takes to learn.

I hope one day television personalities get fired for their incompetence on the air, rather than what happens off the air.
