I especially like the point that’s made re: the Yankees having a lot of homegrown stars because they’re more able to resign them when they reach free agency. It’s not like they’ve got a ton of cheap young players or anything — Jeter may be a homegrown Yankee, but he’s still making $20 million this year.

Anger at a general manager who just announced the hiring of a manager who was cast away by the worst organization in the game.

I read this 3 times and can’t help but think it implies you’re angry at the hiring of Acta. Are you? Or is it a disguised dig at the fans who don’t like the hiring because of his W-L record?

No, I’m not mad about it at all. The piece is already very long, so I didn’t have time to go in-depth into popular fan misconceptions. My first job to was to report the mood of the fan base, and I only really got to hint at the misconceptions.

Wow. Now I know why I’m very selective about where I read comments. A few "high"lights:

Thomes, Ramerizs, Lees, Sabathas

Let’s play find the punctuation!

allot of people said that cc sabathia is allways bad in the post season but this year he did pretty good and he will still do good in game 1 of the world series and cliff lee is good also that was the perfect choice for the phillies and i hope cliff lee is playing against sabathia cause that would be awesome but i wonder why is the phillies not putting in cole hamels hes there #1 pitcher hamels is still good but i guess the phillies like cliff lee more now

That’s a lot of words. I just looked at the pictures.

"You are an LGT success story" -- Jay

by Turkmenbashi on Oct 28, 2009 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

No, what you’ve said in your follow up is that one who agrees with this girlfriend analogy must necessarily care more about the Indians then one who doesn’t. I just don’t think that’s what follows logically. It’s certainly one possible explanation but there are thousands of others. Perhaps someone who doesn’t find it apt feels so because he has never had a girlfriend. Or perhaps one who does feel it’s apt has never had a really emotionally invested relationship.

by afh4 on Oct 28, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah, my bad. Miscommunication. I should have said different “types” of emotional investments, not different levels. In no way did I mean to imply I’m more passionate about the Indians than you or anyone else, just that I tend to personalize it in a way that may or may not be healthy.

by woodsmeister on Oct 28, 2009 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions

It would be far easier to paint it as a black and white scenario but there are, in fact, fans of the Yankees who are intelligent, reasoned individuals with a love for baseball in general. However, that love of the game becomes consumed by the lust of the fan. Especially come post season. The blinders are put on.

I can’t wholly blame them for taking satisfaction in seeing their home team succeed. I just wish there were more moments when they admitted that their relationship with the Yankees of the last 10 years is built upon … how did Jay put it? “On the field, [the Yankees] were a club that started every inning on third base, and in the stands, their fans thought they’d hit a triple.”

They may be delusional, but they are still friends.

by JimmyAB on Oct 28, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Very few diehard Yankees fans are decent people.

Decent people who root for the Yankees tend to float off into two groups. The first group is diehard baseball fans, so that their diehard nature ends up getting spread out over the whole sport, even though the Yankees remain their primary rooting interest. The second group simply stop being diehard fans, becoming more like zempf rooting for the Phillies, because it’s hard for a decent person to be diehard Yankees fan, understanding the unfair advantages they use to gain on-field success.

by Jay on Oct 28, 2009 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I would say you are vastly overstating the relationship between being a decent person and maintaining one’s sports allegiances.

I agree in principal to your parceling of “decent” Yankees fans but think we probably disagree on the numbers involved. It has been my experience in living in NYC for over a decade that there are far more decent fans in NY than most of us here at LGT would care to admit. It’s just simpler to view NY as a vast wasteland of blow hard, overly privileged and spoiled jerks.

If the Yankees fortunes became the Indians fortunes (not just today but in a historical sense) would that preclude us from being able to remain true fans of our team?

I’ve wanted to punch NYY friends in the face for their maddening denial of how advantaged the Yankees are..it can be infuriating, no denying… but I’m a decent person and at the end of every game (or at least every season) so are they.

I don’t think it’s really a point to argue on. Hopefully we will be able to watch CC finally implode and Cliff shine…and when the Yankees go on to get swept, take some dismal satisfaction in that our best, on both sides, helped the lesser of two evils prevail.

Oh, Joy.

Hey, it’s me. I’ve actually been giving a lot of thought to this lately, so here’s a blog post-worthy rumination a bit:

I have vague memories of going to Indians games at Municipal Stadium back in the late 80’s with my tee-ball team. I remember having crappy cheap seats, I remember rooting for Cory Snyder, I remember there not being a whole lot of other people there. Flash forward a few years, I have much clearer memories of going to a bunch of games at the Jake in the mid-90’s as a teenager, sitting in my grandfather’s seats in section 555, watching Belle, Baerga, Lofton, Nagy. I moved to Columbus for school in ’99 or so but still followed the team, always making the drive up to go to a game once or twice a year & watching as many games as I could on STO.

Katie & I moved out to Philadelphia in May of 2006 and despite not having cable I jury-rigged some horrible setup broadcasting from mlb.tv on my computer to the living room so I could keep watching games, albeit slightly pixellated. When we moved into our house & got cable installed, I dropped the money to get the Extra Innings package so I could keep watching the Tribe, and I lived and died (mostly died) watching them in the 2007 season, the midge game, Garko pounding beers with Blake, all that fun stuff. 2008 rolled around, and hopes were high, but obviously the Tribe got off to their patented slow start. Even after Sabathia & Blake got traded, though, it was still interesting to watch Wedge’s usual second-half tear & watch Cliff Lee cruise to the Cy Young.

Meanwhile, in 2008 the Phillies were pretty good — I only went to one game, but it wasn’t possible to escape playoff hysteria around here, and what do you know? It’s pretty damn fun to see a team win the World Series and go to the parade. So early this year, I bought partial season tickets to the Phillies, though I think I actually watched more early-season Indians games on TV than Phillies games because I still believed. Well, that didn’t get me too far – not only did Lee & Martinez (and Betancourt & Garko & Francisco) get traded, but the Tribe had all the markings of a team that mailed it in the last half of the season. Meanwhile the Phillies were cruising to an NL East title, and here we are today.

I think in my heart, I just love baseball — when I travel, I try to see a game at the local stadium because it’s just a great game no matter who’s playing, whether it’s Diamondbacks & Padres in San Diego or Astros & Cardinals in St. Louis. Am I still an Indians fan? Most definitely. I know they’re coming to Philadelphia next year, and I am honestly debating which hat I’ll wear to the games (maybe my block C hat for the odd innings?). At the same time, it gets a little rough to be told “this is the year” so many times and have it turn out that, no, this is not the year (..again). I’d like to think that being a Phillies fan does not preclude being an Indians fan, but I would definitely say my level of fandom has died off, which I do feel.. well, I’m not sure what I feel. Bad? I guess, but I don’t know who I feel like I’m apologizing to, or for what.

*sigh*

MIke, I don’t know how to tell you this, but you’re kind of just coming off as a front-running douchebag.

I’ve been indulging in rooting for the Phillies this year. I tried to last year, but it was tough. Then I started to get into it, and then when they won it all, the rooting ran right out of me. I thought I’d be happy, but when it happened, it hit me like a ton of bricks … it was someone else’s team celebrating, not mine.

This year is a little different. I long to enjoy the simple pleasure of rooting for a ballclub again. I am rooting for Cliff Lee, and once the World Series matchup emerged, it got a lot easier to root for the Phillies. I don’t think it’s a rationalization to say that hating the Yankees is what keeps me from considering myself a front-runner. After all, I’d be rooting against the Yankees anyway. I mean, it’s my job.

Once you’re already rooting against one team, rooting for the other team becomes a distinction without a difference. Plus, the Phillies make for a nice team to root for. A bunch of solid hustling guys and a few major talents who are really worth watching.

Having said all that, I walk around Philly in an Indians cap four or five days a week, and the thought never crossed my mind that I might wear something different to an Indians-Phillies tilt.

I mean … DUH.

by Jay on Oct 29, 2009 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

After all, I’d be rooting against the Yankees anyway.

I was at a bar last night celebrating a friend’s birthday, and several of the people we were with have no real interest in baseball, or at least none while the Indians aren’t playing. I didn’t even notice when the WS game started.

One of my non-interested fans looked up and noticed what was on, and said rather loudly, “Oh, it’s the World Series! Who is everyone rooting for?”
And a guy at least 20 years our senior next to us answered, “I know who the f*** we’re rooting against,” and with that Matt Stairs drove in the first run and everyone in the bar cheered. The timing was perfect.

First, I can tell you first-hand that this is the case.

Second, I can tell you that the kind of shrill ignorance found on cleveland.com is pretty much mainstream in Philly. In this town’s sports culture, passion is absolutely conflated with anger and ignorance. There is pride in being angry and ignorant, because that is a signifier of your passion as a fan.

by Jay on Oct 31, 2009 12:33 AM EDT up reply actions

by Jay on Oct 31, 2009 12:52 AM EDT up reply actions

by Brad D on Oct 31, 2009 1:04 AM EDT up reply actions

First sentence: I never said that. I stated (or implied) that there is significant variation in the quality of fans in different places. Cleveland and Philly are only two data points out of dozens.

Second sentence: Perhaps. It’s an interesting topic to study. Thoughtful old-school Red Sox fans lament that the next generation of fans will be spoiled douchebags, and probably stupid, too. A team with a long and proud tradition but not so many rings attracts a different type of person to be a diehard fan, that’s for sure. I mean, just look at the mutant scum that root hardest for the Yankees.

I’m pretty proud of some of my posts in there, if it’s not too obnoxious for me to say so. I get to the heart of the Yankees awfulness in a better way than I usually do.

There’s nothing for you to be proud of. I would be embarrassed to be a Yankees fan, embarrassed to be playing the underdog to a team like the Indians. I’d be saying, “Even if we win, there’s nothing to be proud of here.”

Hell, I felt that way even when we were mugging the Twins back in 2001. But you have no shame. If you understood how this game really works, you’d be ashamed of the Yankees.

There was a guy at the Phillies/Dodgers NLCS game wearing a Yankees hat & jersey. I think he was lost or something, cause.. why would you even leave the house dressed like that, much less go to a freaking Phillies playoff game dressed like that?

I don’t understand the reasoning behind wearing a cap or jersey or whatever that represents a team that is not playing a game in the stadium you are at.

Perhaps if there is a particular player who was once on your team and is now playing for someone else. i.e Cliff or Victor. But really, what is the point?

I typically look at someone doing that and think that they really should be walking around with a big sandwich board that reads: “Hey, everybody! LOOK AT ME! I’m a fan of another team that isn’t even in this ballpark. What do you think about that?”

Maybe that’s the point. Seems silly.

Unless it’s Indians gear. I can accept seeing that anywhere.

by JimmyAB on Oct 30, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t see it as billboard-like, especially if it’s just a cap. A cap is hardly a statement at all, but if it’s a statement, it’s just, “I’m just here to enjoy the game.”

My perception is perhaps colored by 10 years of seeing most of my baseball at Yankee or Shea stadium; In the Bronx particularly, if you are wearing stuff other than Yankees crap you are going to get attention. If it’s the visiting teams colors, fair enough, but if the Red Sox are not in town and you are there in a Boston cap or jersey then you are most definitely asking for some conflict.

So, I guess in most parks I can get on board with Nickjs21’s take on it.

It’s exciting to be with another team for awhile, but in the end, you’ll come running back to the Tribe, which has been good to you for so many years. I mean, we all fantasize about being with a winning team from time to time. It’s human nature. Sure, the Phillies are a little different, maybe a little younger. Maybe you’re bored with the same old routine, the slow first halves, the injuries, the bitter disappointments of near victories. I know, I know, these days we probably win only once a month, or once a week, when we used to do it all the time. But we can do better. Sabathia unquestionably was the club’s most valuable pitcher that season, but he faltered badly in the playoffs. He barely managed to scrape together a quality start against the Yankees in the Division Series, and he crapped the bed completely in the ALCS against the Red Sox. It may seem cruel to pin the Indians’ failure to win the pennant on Sabathia, but the simple truth is that he was absolutely terrible in that series, while his teammates took three games out of five without his help. He won the Cy Young Award, but his team won only the division title.
And now, just to rub salt in our wounds, Sabathia has produced for New York where he totally fell flat for Cleveland. In the 2007 postseason with the Indians, Sabathia posted an 8.80 ERA over three starts in the first two rounds. In 2009 for the Yankees, he’s posted a 1.19 ERA in three starts.

Thanks for writing this. I found it strangely therapeutic; it validates the (petty?) anger I harbor for CC.

Jay, your piece was very cathartic. Especially liked the last few paragraphs.

Remember after Lee’s phenomenal Cy Young season in 2008 most of us thought it was a fluke, a career year, and that he would never again rise to the level of a Cy Young again? God, were we wrong.

If you believe it's just a game, you're also probably wondering why Santa keeps skipping your house every year.

by LeftyCatcher on Oct 28, 2009 10:29 PM EDT reply actions

In an alternate reality, Westbrook went on to become the 2008 Cy Young winner and thereafter, following a complete Indians collapse in 2009, was traded to the Phillies and matched up against 2007 Cy Young winner ( and ex-Cleveland ace) CC Sabathia in Game 1 of the world series.

Equally as painful for the Indians faithful but here and today we are at least spared the NY Post headline: “JAKE AND THE FATMAN”.

That is, until I just went and posted it.

That’s what I hear. I keep meaning to take the Acela from DC to NYC, but I always end up going the cheap route and take the Chinatown Express. Biden was supposed to put more funding into it – I saw the regional “high speed” plans. But I’m not sure that’ll ever amount to much. Such a shame, it works so well in other parts of the world.

Then again, DC metro ain’t nothing to write home about either – except that its generally clean. And always late.

I mean, it’s frustrating. Often downright maddening, sometimes waiting 9-10 minutes for trains during rush hour. Never as efficient as the NYC subway. But it’s clean. It’s a relatively robust system. Second-highest ridership in the country. And for when it was built, it accomplishes some great things. It’s done a lot of good for this city.

by Turkmenbashi on Oct 29, 2009 8:18 AM EDT up reply actions

The problem is – as one longtime DC resident explained to me while waiting for a Metro train for over 30 minutes – that the DC metro really is a light rail system designed to get people from the suburbs to the center of the the district. It’s not a subway system like New York, London or Paris. This doesn’t keep people from trying to use it as a true subway. When it comes to getting around the city on a daily basis – it matters.

It also matters when the system is constantly – and I do mean CONSTANTLY – breaking down, running slow or being repaired. It also hurts it that it takes an act of congress to make changes to it or to get additional funding.

Ask people who ride it every day – it needs improvements. I am all for public transportation – I absolutely support it 100%. DC’s Metro – while functioning – can be improved greatly.

I just wanted to believe.

by mjmarble on Oct 29, 2009 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions

While I agree that it needs (potentially vast) improvements, I think you’d do well to consider the time period during which Metro was built. This was an era of more cars and bigger roads. The fact that DC had the foresight to do this then speaks volumes. This wasn’t something built before cars were even imagined, as in NYC or London — this is a public transit wonder spawned in the height of the automobile era.

Also, you have to think it’s inherently easier to allow a city to develop around an existing subway than to build a Metro system in a modern city while simultaneously trying to create and improve neighborhoods without destroying pre-existing ones. It’s really quite a feat. But it needs better leadership.

Much like the Tribe — great “talent,” lack of funds in an otherwise unfair system, and questionable leadership.

I use Amtrak quite a lot to get from Richmond to DC. The single biggest problem with Amtrak is that it doesn’t own the rails on which it runs. The freight lines own the rails, and their trains have priority. That’s why the Amtrak trains will sometimes come to a complete stop – they are required by the terms of their contract to let the freight train pass.

I honestly think that one of this country’s biggest problems is its addiction to the car. I once saw an interview with an elected official from Portland, OR who was basically being attacked by a reporter for being “anti-car” and somehow by default anti-American. The official kinda cocked his head and said that Portland’s de-emphasizing the car (narrower roads, less parking and more public transportation) was done so that people had the right and the ability to choose their method of transport. He ended the interview by asking the reporter what was so wrong with having the freedom to choose.

This country has a very long way to go. It is shameful that we’ve built a society that revels in its freedom while limiting its populace.

Sorry, Jimmy, but it really isn’t that complicated: No quarter given when it comes to the Yankees.

They are the ancestral foes of our Cleveland Indians.

They are presently destroying the game, and through their malfeasance have robbed Indians fans, directly and indirectly, of a lot of celebrating.

Their ownership and fans are disgusting people. Even if I were from New York and had lived their all my life, I could not be more than a casual Yankees fan.

I believe these views are absolutely mainstream among Indians fans. Most who dissent, pardon my saying, are either ignorant of Indians history and tradition or haven’t really thought through the economic realities of the present, or both.

There’s nothing really unusual about my stance on this, except perhaps for my confidence in that stance. It may seem unbecoming or even inconsistent, to some, for a moderator on a site that pushes intellect and civility to be so openly and even systemically hostile to anyone. To those who wonder about this, I say:

  • The site mods are not immune from the raw passions of being an Indians fan — far from it.
  • Evil is evil, and we call it like we see it.
  • Our stance is part and parcel of the Indians fan experience, and in the best traditions of Indians fandom.
  • It’s our site, and the Yankees are spat upon here, end of story.

I have no problem with you, Jimmy — I think you’ve been great in your brief time here so far. If you have a problem with me on this, well, that’s just too bad.

You make some good points. I don’t really care to argue them; I think there’s good food for thought on both sides.

One small clarification I will make. I have challenged the quality of a person’s Indians’ fandom based on their not hating the Yankees enough — guilty as charged. I don’t think, however, that I have derided anyone for not hating their fans enough.

I know you will not surprised to learn that when I meet a Yankees fan, I am not automatically hostile to that person right off the bat. Well, not entirely hostile, anyway.

Not that any of us need any more ammunition to think that the average Yankees fan is an idiot, but when a Cleveland team wins a Championship, I’m positive I won’t be that happy. Yes, it will be an incredible experience to have the journey (really, the more enjoyable part anyway) finally end with a victory, and being a Cleveland fan is a big part of my life and who I am, but I’m sure that I’ve worked hard enough at different passions and have been lucky enough to have such people in my life that there are many points of my life happier than that which this Manhattan chump is trumpeting.
