Memories of Pitcher Cliff Young?
I'm Arne Christensen: I have a blog called Misc. Baseball. Last year, after putting together a long post on the boating accident in spring training 1993 that killed Steve Olin and Tim Crews, I heard of Cliff Young for the first time. For those who don't know, Young was a journeyman reliever, primarily, who was with the Angels in 1990 and 1991, then was with the Indians for about half the 1993 season. He died in Texas near his hometown, on the night of November 4, 1993, when the truck he was driving hit a tree and flipped over. I used excerpts from some newspaper accounts to put together an account of the accident and funeral.
It seems that Young's life is hardly remembered these days, and I guess his death has always been overshadowed by the Indians other 1993 tragedy. So, I thought I'd ask you guys if you remember much about Young, and the impact his death had on you and the Indians. At his funeral, Mike Hargrove said: “What can you really say at a time like this? A man you’ve been through a hot summer with is now gone.”

Honestly, I don’t remember him that much, so I checked out his b-ref page. It looks like he was a swingman, and was (I assume) optioned out in late July. I was 12 at the time, and don’t remember hearing about his untimely death at the time, though as I got older I learned about it.
