Rooting Interest
So here we are, the first week of October, at least 30 games under .500 and guaranteed to finish 20 games out of first place in the – ugh – AL Central. To us old timers this feels very familiar.
But now the play-offs are upon us and we need to ask the question: who are you rooting for to win it all? Lots of ex-Indians out there to provide a modicum of rooting interest for Tribe fans: CC on the Yankees, Manny, Casey, Thome, and Ronnie on the Dodgers, Pavano with the Twins, Vic with the BoSox, Cliff and BenFran with the Phillies (and Victorino too!), DeRosa and Ludwick (OK that’s a stretch) with the Cards, Maicer Izturis – another stretch – with the Angels, Raffie B– along with Dan O’Dowd - with the Rockies, so there’s plenty of reasons to root for one team or another. Or root against ‘em for that matter.
So here’s what I wanna know: who you pullin’ for and why?

I’ve sorta come to hate all the AL teams. My conditions at this point were a) NL team and b) high payroll (so that I could see how the other half lives, and because if it’s not the Indians winning, I want Selig’s parity argument to have no basis in reality). So a friend asked me to pull for the Dodgers with her, and I was like, yeah, sure. I mean, I like a lot of those players, and the games will be on late enough that I won’t watch most of them. Perfect.

Agreed. I hate to think the only thing that might piss people off enough to force a change in the system is the Yankees stringing together several WS wins.

I went Rockies, cuz screw those other teams.
However, if the Yankees were an option, I would have picked them. I hope the Yankees win the next 10 championships in a row and that the fans of baseball get so sick of the stacked deck that New York enjoys that there becomes a ground swell to level the playing field on player salaries. The reality of most small and mid-market teams bites, especially on October 5th.
by ShawnK on Oct 5, 2009 11:09 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Good idea, but the Yankees could win every World Series from 2009 to 2035, most of them four and out, and there would be no clamor for change. It would simply confirm what is already asserted: that the residents of New York are among the chosen ones, and that anyone who lives outside the NY metropolitan area is a hick, a cartoon character, someone who couldn’t “make it there” as their idiotic song has it. The Yankees could win every game by a score of 10-0 and it would simply be the ways things are supposed to be.

I could do a long pro and con on the Phillies. The main con is that the most diehard fans tend to be boorish dumbasses — the sports culture here is generally repellent — and anyway, no fan base deserves to win twice. The main pro may be the lack of more desirable options. It would be nice, I suppose, for some team other than the Yankees to look like a dynasty for a little bit. The last pro is Cliff Lee — his timing wasn’t great, but he owes us nothing, and I’ve really come to respect him.

Seeing that an AL West team must always make the playoffs, this collection of 4 in the postseason this year for the AL is my worst possible scenario.
by Roger Dorn on Oct 9, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hmm. What is the best possible scenario?
Good question, me. I’d have to say,
Rays— I have to think they’re fun to watch, right? Obviously we can view them as a threat but for reasons of this scenario we already assume these are playoff teams, and the Orioles are pretty boring outside of a few good prospects in addition to carrying the possibility of Jeremy Guthrie meeting and beating us in the playoffs. Pass. And the Blue Jays? If I wanted to potentially lose a series to a bunch of light-hitting fielding specialists I’d just put the Twins in the wild card.
Indians— Obviously.
Athletics— Someone from the West has to make it, there’s an obvious Thinking GM connection (which clearly isn’t hard to find anymore, but still, I like to think every nerd has a soft spot for Beane). Plus, payroll! I see the argument that more big-money teams making the playoffs makes Selig look bad and forces the issue, but I still have to pull for the little guy.
Mariners— Wild Card. This one was a battle of meh but I really can’t bring myself to hate the Mariners. Others will disagree because of Ichiro, but when I was a kid they were my second team for whatever reason a kid chooses—for me it was Griffey and having relatives near Seattle. And hat tip to Lookout Landing, a blog I’ve been reading since we invaded their game thread. Anyway I don’t really like Texas, I loathe the Angels, I won’t even name the teams I’ve left out of the East, and I don’t see a reason to put in another Central team in my dream scenario (although I guess it would make the Central look better… but we’re already in so who gives a crap?)
Nationals— Wow do I not like many teams in the AL East. And I think I’m just automatically annoyed by any team that has recently won a World Series.
Brewers— This one feels easy. I liked them even before they hosted our snow series and CC’s trade.
Arizona— Just because I like several of the players.
Giants— Loves me some pitching.

As far as this year goes, once we were out of it, I think I was going with the Rays, Mariners, Giants or Florida. The Rockies are up there but not enough to even pick them in the above poll.

I agree with all of this except that I’d have the Rangers coming out of the west. Always kinda liked them for some reason.

I never like the Rangers because of the fact they could never evaluate pitching. Looks like that’s changing.

Yankees versus Red Sox i hope for an asteroid to smash into Fenway Park. An 850-meter object at a velocity of 22 kilometers a second.

For Yankee Stadium games, the object will have to be larger and travel faster.

Seems fair.

It will also have to be richer to be allowed into the park.

Don’t know if he can count, but I’m pretty sure he can’t spell.

I think CC can count. To higher numbers than we will ever reach.

One of the reasons a larger object is needed in the Bronx.

My prediction was a wee bit off.
I won’t jinx my new pick.

Pitching this well, he’ll certainly end up in pinstripes early this offseason.

Still a great start, against that lineup.

Of course. But dammit, I just hate these Yankee fellas.

Victor, Pavano, Betancourt and DeRosa — all out.
Lee and Francisco are the only 2009 Indians who made it to the second round. Amazingly, neither one made the postseason roster for the 2007 Indians or contributed much to their 96 wins.
Blake and Sabathia are the only other 2007-2008 Indians still in it.

It can’t be amazing that Benfran wasn’t on the ps roster nor that he didn’t contribute much.

What is amazing is that both guys are contributing now in the 2009 playoffs for someone else, and that neither was a part of our 2007 success despite being on our 40-man roster at the time.

Not any more amazing than CC turning in a good performance in a playoff game. Thanks for the memories!
