That goose egg he slapped up in the series doesn’t help either. Rather poor decision making on Cabrera’s part, who, judging from his BMI, has never struck me as an exceptionally disciplined or driven player. Hopefully he’s still in the bag for tomorrow’s game.

It’s the newest sabermetric trend, I believe.

Obviously the o-fer is going to look really bad to the fan base (and of course be the worse thing he did that weekend), but I’m not convinced him being drunk early that morning has anything to do with it.

The best running back in my high school’s history consistently smelled like he showered in whiskey during game time. Maybe just needs another round.

He was in high school in ’64 so that would make him early 60s. Name was Roosevelt Robinson, played in the NFL at some point, too.

It would seem that there is anecdotal support for some athletes to be able to play well or even better than they usually do while under the influence of alcohol. Miguel Cabrera does not seem to be one of those fellas.

And by athletes, you mean “people at the pong table.”

You can’t really support that last sentence, and of course I can’t really argue it. For all we know he was half in the bag during any given 4-for-4 outing. We have no idea how many players are dealing with a hangover during a game. I’ve had all kinds of hangovers and done all kinds of activities with them, with both wildly successful and appallingly poor results. Baseball certainly isn’t a sport where you need to be amped up to play your best. Maybe a cloudy mind might even be good for some guys.

Of course you’re correct. The only evidence that I have that Miguel has ever played whilst drunk/hungover is his little excursion this weekend, which makes him look dreadful but is an admittedly small sample. I was thinking more the lack of physical/ hand-eye coordination that occurs in some (most?) people when in any state of intoxication would be the hampering issue.

I would think baseball would be one of the toughest of all sports to participate in while drunk. Batting at least.

LSD and excruciating hangovers seem to do well for pitchers. Sample size of, what, two?

The Tigers have apparently warned him about an altercation he had at a bar in August :
[He] allegedly mocked a teenager about his weight and challenged a man to a fight

Oh, and here’s the link.
In the August incident, according to the information, a man told Birmingham police that he and an unnamed teen encountered Cabrera at the Rugby Grille on Aug. 31 about 6:30 p.m. Cabrera allegedly asked the teen, who weighs about 300 pounds, “What’s up, big boy? You need to work out,” according to the information provided to The News.
The teen then asked Cabrera to stop taunting him and said, “Let me be.”
But it became confrontational, the man told police: Cabrera allegedly challenged the man and the teen. “‘You don’t know me or where I am from,” he allegedly said. “Let’s go right now. I’ll fight both of you right now. Let’s go outside.” At one point, the man told police he felt that Cabrera intimated that he had a gun, saying he was going to go to his vehicle and get his “click-clack” and making a motion with his hands that he interpreted as the racking of a handgun.
