With all the constant lineup changing, it's a fact that the Indians need to have a set order. I think I have the perfect one.
1. Asdrubal Cabrera SS
2. Luis Valebuena 2B
3. Grady Sizemore CF
4. Travis Hafner DH
5. Jhonny Peralta 3B
6. Shin Soo Choo RF
7. Michael Brantley LF
8. Jamey Carroll 1B
9. Carlos Santana C
I know that Carroll isn't exactly a first basemen but he is way better than Marte. I also think that Shoppach is not consistent enough which is why I have Santana in there instead.

well, Carroll, despite not exactly being a very good first baseman, let alone a member of the Cleveland Indians, is much better than Marte. Therefore, LaPorta should not start.

To attempt and make everyone happy I have made some changes.
Carroll has been switched for LaPorta. However, if Carroll is signed look for him to get a lot of starts as a utility guy. Hafner is staying 4th because I will bet anyone that he will hit at least 25 homeruns and get 100 rbi’s or more. And Brantley will move to 8th so the so called “superstar” LaPorta will get to bat 7th.

And isn’t Brantley supposed to relieve Sizemore of his leadoff duties. I will agree with you that Droobs is a good hitter however he seems more productive in the 2 or 3 whole until we can solidify this offense.

You think the batting order was our problem this year?
by Jay on Oct 7, 2009 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The players in the lineup. Not the order. I know that our pitching wasn’t exactly superb but it’s more about the players than the actual order.
by steve koobs on Oct 7, 2009 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, you’re just wrong on the facts. We ended the season with a league average lineup. Six weeks ago, before we started phoning it in, our lineup was still top 5 or 6. This is despite a ton of missed time by Hafner and Sizemore, hellacious slumps from Peralta, Sizemore and Shoppach, and some rookie growing pains from Valbuena and LaPorta.
People who think the Indians have a bad lineup are simply ignorant of the facts.
Carroll is not a better hitter than Marte, probably won’t be resigned, definitely won’t get a lot of starts unless we have an injury in the 3B-SS-2B area. Batting one of your two best hitters 6th is incomprehensibly dumb. It is in fact a bad idea to stack a bunch of lefties in your lineup, as they can be dominated in late innings by a single pitching move.
People here will expect you to be able to back up your opinions with reason and facts, and yes, your baseball knowledge does in fact need some work.

Jay is of course 100% correct here. Even after we lost Martinez, Derosa, Fransisco, Garko, and Sizemore, along with a very unproductive year from Hafner our lineup still managed to score 773 runs which was 12th in the majors, 142 runs of the league leading Yankees. In comparison to the 2007 Central Division Championship team we were not that far off.
Team batting statistics 2009:
.264 BA, 773 R, 1468 H, 161 HR, 314 2B, 28 3B, 730 RBI, .339 OBP
.417 SLG
Team batting stats 2007:
.268 BA, 811 R, 1504 H, 178 HR, 305 2B, 27 3B, 784 RBI, .343 OBP,
.428 SLG

Alright although i still think he will start right out of spring training. Look at his stats from his second stint in the major leagues this year and you will be suprised how well he actually hit when you take out the first stint.
Laporta’s 1st stint:
.190, 1 HR 4 RBI
Laporta’s 2nd stint:
.273, 6 HR’s 17 RBI

LaPorta’s problem in the first stint was most likely attributable to a) nerves (first go around) and b) lack of consistent playing time (such as he had been receiving in Columbus and probably every team he has ever played for).
Oh, and quit comparing any of our players to the Nationals…that is just poor taste.

His second stint came once the Indians had no shot to reach the playoffs. So he either isn’t a clutch player or he just needed more experience.
by steve koobs on Oct 7, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ok. Deep breaths.
There is going to be no discussion on this site on whether or not LaPorta is a “clutch” player based on less than a season’s worth of at bats and, barring some very strange statistical aberrations, there will probably never be any discussion of whether or not he’s a “clutch” player.
Try numbers.

Not completely true .. from Dictionary.com
Pronunciation note:
Often was pronounced with a t-sound until the 17th century, when a pronunciation without the [t] came to predominate in the speech of the educated, in both North America and Great Britain, and the earlier pronunciation fell into disfavor. Common use of a spelling pronunciation has since restored the [t] for many speakers, and today [aw-fuhn] and [awf-tuhn] [or [of-uhn] and [of-tuhn]] exist side by side. Although it is still sometimes criticized, often with a [t] is now so widely heard from educated speakers that it has become fully standard once again.

It is a train wreck waiting to happen but I want to prove that I do actually know a lot about baseball.

I believe that you know:
- which direction to run around the bases
- how many balls are called before a walk is awarded
- that the team that scores the most runs wins.
Everything else is up in the air, but there will be no formal test. Either you will stop saying things that have no foundation in reality, or you won’t.

Huff and Sowers will probably come down to another spring training battle (Sowers has got to be sick of those by now), and Carrasco will be given extra time in Columbus with Rondon and Lewis. Reyes is gone or passed through waivers.

youth does not excuse ignorance.
Yeah, It does.
I didn’t realize that LGT was comprised of baseball whiz-kids whose fathers taught them to keep score when they were 5 years-old. If that’s the case, I need to excuse myself because my dad taught me nothing of baseball.
LGT is a great place to learn—I’d say there is no better Indians forum out there—and everybody usually takes their lumps when they show up on the scene (I know I stilll do), but show some compassion. I’ve always considered these forums a place to go for intelligent conversation even when it’s way off topic. Some of the stuff in here has gone too far. Are we baseball-snob bullies?
Be a man and help this kid become one as well.
No, not you. Your helmet!
by PatBordersHelmet on Oct 9, 2009 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions 2 recs
I’m no bully to those who demonstrate that they have any interest in learning. I was too glib – youth excuses the stupid post about Hargrove. It probably excuses the stupidity of the original lineup post. It doesn’t excuse continuing to proclaim “my baseball knowledge is just fine” and challenging Jay to a battle of baseball wits while (1) claiming a guy not on the team should be the starting first baseman, (2) insisting Travis Hafner’s salary is a valid metric when creating a lineup and (3) asserting that Matt LaPorta’s 49 PA are justification for leaving him on the bench while simultaneously starting a catcher who has zero PA above the Eastern League.
The solution is simple:
SK: I’m sorry for behaving like a 12 year old. Teach me, my elders.LGT: Welcome, son. Hear our wisdom.
by FredOx on Oct 9, 2009 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs

I’m not defending or supporting any of his posts or comments, I’m just pointing out this is a juvenile (which explains his demeanor.) Is it agreed that we not pick on or stoop to the level of a child? That would be bad for everyone, right?
I was one of the first to respond to this bizarre post, but I backed off once I sensed something was wrong. It was the DiaTribe’s link to his podcast that made me jump back in. I don’t care what age this individual claims to be, but he sounds and acts like a child. We should treat him as such.
If adults are playing b-ball and a 12 year-old struts up to the court and repeatedly declares he will school and dunk on everyone, how should the adults respond? Insults? Or should they set a good example how adults should act. Clearly this kid hasn’t yet figured out what LGT is about. Let’s not give him the wrong impression.

Can I ask how you thought a player who has have never played 1B in his career, never been a regular starter outside of one year with another club, and is a free agent should be our starting 1B next year? I am just really curious to hear the logic behind this. I know you stated earlier that in your mind he is better than Marte at 1B and that in your view LaPorta hasn’t proven he can play at the big league level. But what I really want to know is why you picked Carroll. Of all the people, why him?

by steve koobs on Oct 9, 2009 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
More depth and solid players? By starting a career back-up middle infielder at 1B? I fail to see how moving a back-up to a starter position adds depth and solid players. You added nothing to the mix that could constitute as depth, aside from Santana all the players on your list played for the Indians last year so you aren’t adding anything there. And aside from Carroll you stuck everyone at their standard positions, just shifted the line-up a little. Maybe if you would have advocated signing a Nick Johnson type player (high OBP, solid defensive 1B) then you argument for depth and solid players would have some more legs.
