If Westbrook isn't ready by April, Pavano has a decent chance to be back.

I saw an article stating this a few days ago. I just don’t believe it. From either side.

Every time Pavano pitched I found myself waiting for an implosion. Sure he had his poor starts, but he managed to avoid prolonged suck-itude. I think he’s a type B FA, so the Twins would get a supplemental pick, which means the Indians wouldn’t lose a draft pick (which is nice). Pavano would make a nice place-holder while some of the younger arms get a little more seasoning, plus he provides some insurance should Westbrook go down, Carmona suck, or any of the quartet of pitchers (Masterson, Laffey, Sowers, Huff) who will likely fill the last three spots in the rotation can’t hack it. Just keep the guaranteed money low and the incentives reasonable. Bringing him back isn’t necessary, but with the right contract I could justify the move.

The bigger news here:

Westbrook will start for Ponce and manager Eduardo Perez on Nov. 28 in Puerto Rico.

Finally convinced my dad that Jeter is immensely hatable.

I really hope the team he is pitching against is managed by Ben Broussard.

I really hope they bring in Ben Broussard and his guitar to play the national anthem before the game.

Want out of Cleveland? Easy - mess with LeBron's entourage.

April? I’d think that Pavano would certainly get an offer from somebody before then, right?

FIP: 3.56
xFIP: 4.18

That’s a pretty valuable pitcher…

And we know how obsessed they are with FIP and xFIP.

I don’t get it?

I’d assume that most front offices at least consider it…

FYI: I have no idea what the difference is between FIP and xFIP. FACT.

by gte619n on Nov 11, 2009 2:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

you should have used xFACT

The x stands for expected. Used as a better indicator of future performance.

In this case, it’s normalizing the percentage of flyballs allowed that became home runs. It is not considered all that reliable.

he’s probably a good #4 starter for somebody, but let’s not get carried away. . .

If you don't respect Aaron Laffey, I will fight you.

Never forget that Jarrod Washburn was coveted by many teams at the trading deadline.

This seems like sloppy reporting by Hoynes.

Consider these quotes:

He obviously pitched extremely well in Cleveland and Minnesota, so we’re going to make to make those guys priorities to talk to first and kind of branch out from there.
Mark Shapiro had nothing but great things to say about Carl and he really thought Carl was a tremendous asset to his club this year. And Carl really enjoyed the training staff and just the whole experience was solid. This was a very important year for him to really truly establish himself as one of the top starters in the game, and they gave him that opportunity.

Those are from Pavano’s agent. Then consider these quotes:

Our expectation is, at this point, that Jake will be in our rotation at the start of the year
We appreciate the job Carl did for us. He continued to pitch well for the Twins. We’ll have to see what Carl’s expectations are.

Those are from Antonetti. I translate those as the agent saying, “yeah – Cleveland and Minnesota should be interested in Carl (and help drive up his price).” And Antonetti saying, “we did a good job signing Carl and he’s probably priced himself out of our plans for next year now.”

Like with almost every pitcher, he’s looking for years, not salary. They realistically know that Minnesota and Cleveland aren’t going to pony up a 3 year deal.

I’d certainly much rather have Carl Pavano pitching for us next year than Jeremy Sowers. That’s for damn sure.

Cost and control aren’t the same, though.
