I love it.

Max Scherzer (Dbacks) is also focused on advanced stats — he was talking about WAR in one interview.

This is actually hilarious.

by Roger Dorn on Nov 18, 2009 11:19 AM EST reply actions

There is also a certian irony that the Royals pitchers are embracing some stats that factor in defense, while the GM openly stated he ignores sabermetric defensive evaluations.

by Roger Dorn on Nov 18, 2009 11:20 AM EST up reply actions

"David DeJesus had our best zone rating," Bannister said, referring to the Royals’ left fielder. "So a lot of times, Zack would pitch for a fly ball at our park instead of a ground ball, just because the zone rating was better in our outfield and it was a big park."

Greinke FB% at home: 37.6%. On the road: 41.1%.

Well he didn’t say he did it successfully

by Logodaedalus on Nov 18, 2009 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

"That’s pretty much how I pitch, to try to keep my FIP as low as possible," Greinke said

I think the best part of this is that we’re no longer at a point where a mainstream article has to include the word “Moneyball” anywhere in the body for a subject like this.

I should say, no longer feels the need to include Moneyball.

Here’s an interesting stat about Greinke:

The 26-year-old right-hander was the sixth overall pick in the 2002 amateur draft.

I’m going to cry, I think.

by SuddenSam on Nov 18, 2009 11:29 AM EST reply actions

The Indians drafted 22nd that year.

by nickjs21 on Nov 18, 2009 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

I know. Just a reminder of what is possible with such a pick.

by SuddenSam on Nov 18, 2009 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

which we finally have this year? i don’t follow.

by Brick. on Nov 18, 2009 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

ah, i see. the sowers pick never bothers me much because there’s not really any clear misses behind him from that year that weren’t money demand guys.

by Brick. on Nov 18, 2009 12:09 PM EST up reply actions

Nice job by the writer not going for the easy rise from anxiety story.

by westbrook on Nov 18, 2009 12:19 PM EST reply actions

It’s also interesting to see in Greinke’s own words the amount of social anxiety he still harbors even though he has worked through treatment to a point where he is having such success. I doubt he’s going to sign that big Yankee contract when the time comes … he seriously couldn’t handle it.

Wait 'til next millennium!

by emd2k3 on Nov 18, 2009 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, no way he goes to NY… or Boston.

by westbrook on Nov 18, 2009 9:18 PM EST up reply actions

I think it’s entirely possible he never leaves KC. He is already locked up through 2012 at a decent rate.

by The Grimace on Nov 19, 2009 12:09 AM EST up reply actions

Think he smiles on days where there are especially small crowds?

Chugga-chugga chugga-chugga, Choo Choo!

by USSChoo on Nov 19, 2009 1:24 AM EST up reply actions

But if he signs a below-market deal post 2012 will he be ostracized by the union?

Wait 'til next millennium!

by emd2k3 on Nov 19, 2009 10:11 AM EST up reply actions

He’s going to be imitated by expensive shoes and champagne, and run screaming from the terrifying New York restaurant!

And then they’ll break his elbows.

If he doesn’t sign with the Phillies he will be ostrichized.

by FredOx on Nov 19, 2009 11:42 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

We don’t know how expensive the shoes are, just the color.

I’m still stuck on Greinke being imitated by shoes and champagne. I’m picturing a Crow T. Robot-style contraption in a baseball uniform.

by FredOx on Nov 19, 2009 4:48 PM EST up reply actions

I know, it’s terrifying, right?

by Jay on Nov 19, 2009 5:42 PM EST up reply actions

Social anxiety disorder can be justified and appropriate.

by odradek on Nov 21, 2009 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

Zach’s too smart to fall for that. No way he goes into the restaurant with the boys.

Now a good pick. In 2006, a bust pick. You never know.

by DixonCayne on Nov 21, 2009 10:59 AM EST reply actions

Are people busts at 22?
