The Indians are looking for a first baseman, preferably someone who hits right-handed, in case Matt LaPorta (left hip, left toe) isn't ready for opening day and to offset their numerous left-handed hitters.
Paul Hoynes, in the latest installment of Ask A Stupid Question. The context was a discussion of Jordan Brown (duh), but if ShapActa are looking for a right-handed hitter who can play 1B, I think I know a guy.

Run Marte and Brown out there and be done with it. This might be a really stupid place to spend money on this off season.
I’m sure Ryan Garko could be had. I can’t see the Giants keeping him, if they haven’t already non-tendered him, if we’re really honestly looking for someone, but what the heck is wrong with a combination of Marte/Brown? Especially since it won’t cost anything (in baseball terms at least).

Hey look, the Indians are still pretending like they are contenders.
Address it at mid-season if we catch lightening in a bottle.

If they run Jordan Brown out there at first base, we’ll know they’re making absolutely no pretense at contention.

I think that’s a little unfair. Contending teams don’t always have an entirely credible player to start the year at every single key position. Look at our rotation from last year. Even the Yankees, despite the $200 million, tend to run one or two clunkers out there. Jordan Brown isn’t the worst stopgap player you’ll see in an everyday job this year.

Did you just stick up a little bit for Brown?

This ends on the summary at “preferably one who hits.” I like that idea too.

Tribe luck. In 1994, the Indians had the most amazing team. Season ends in strike. In 2012, with the Indians resurgent, the world comes to a bitter end.

The world won’t end ‘til December, plenty of time after the World Series. Cleveland just won’t get to enjoy it very long.

Would seem appropriate.

Yeah, we’d go out as the last world champions… the Omega.

I subscribe to the 20.0.0.0 theory and think we will be okay in 2012.

I’m not sure the average fan would know if we signed a FA or not, I think the fire sale has turned off alot of the fans and it may take more than a fun team to watch to get them back.

Because the Jake was packed and rocking in early 2008. Or late 2007.

Just as the 1995-2000 was a different environment, and we were able to spend with the big boys, and in the 2001-2008 we were able to spend with the mid-market teams, I think the 2009+ the Indian have dropped to being a small fan market base like the 60,70,80. I think attendance will be the down to less than 1.4 million and maybe even around 1 million. It is going to be very hard to bring back the average fan, a team that losses more game than they win will not do it. Being fun to watch is for the hard core fans.

The average fan is not coming, period. You just said it yourself. There’s no “bringing back” unless we’re pretending that we’re trying to bring them back from over a decade ago.

A .500 team could draw fans if the Browns ineptitude continues and LeBron goes bye bye.

I still don’t follow this line of logic. I mean, I know what you’re trying to say, I just don’t think it washes.

“Hard core fans” are a different segment than “hard core game attenders.” There are people whose fandom is really and truly defined by going to dozens of games every year. It’s a lifestyle. Not many of us here are in that cohort, but those are the fans that support the club financially.

I never really thought about this but I think you’re right. The lot of us are so enthralled with the game that we really are content to watch it from home.
