Indians interested in Alomar Jr for spot on Acta's staff
I've only seen Hoynsie reporting this, so take it for what it's worth

You know, this makes a hell of a lot more sense than the “Omar player/coach” non-sense that had been blowing around for the last month. I could see this as a decent pickup, especially for Marson and Santana as they become the everyday catchers. Especially for Santana. Who knows if this reports holds weight or not, but, eh, I’d be okay with it. Why not.

I just wonder, if it is in fact a lateral move, if that would create any problems.

Problems?
As in, Alomar not interested in moving teams for a non-promotion?
Or as in, the Mets being angry? Why would they—Alomar comes “home” is reason enough.

Alomar for Joel Skinner and a minor-league coach to be named later.

I’m sure Alomar would be fine with it, but to the best of my knowledge he’s under contract with the Mets.
Going from one similar coaching job to another is seen as a lateral move, which may prompt the Mets to keep him.
You usually only see members of the coaching staff leave for promotions. Of course we have no idea what capacity the Indians are looking for him to take.

It isn’t about leaving, it’s about interviewing for one job while already under contract.
- If he’s under contract with the Mets, he can’t interview with us without permission.
- The custom in baseball is to grant permission to interview only for a promotion, not for a lateral move. As in, you can’t have my batting coach to be your batting coach, you can only interview him if you want to give him a promotion.
- This would be a lateral move, so if he’s still under contract, we generally would not get permission.
- If he’s not under contract — as our former coaches are not — then it’s not an issue.
- Because the Mets staff is in flux, and Alomar has a big history with Cleveland, an exception might be made in this case.

Right, that.

NL → AL. That’s got to be considered a promotion, right?

You’d also have to wonder if Minaya’s friendship with Acta would contribute to him allowing Sandy a lateral move.

Of all the ex-Indian catchers to hire for a staff position, why are Andy Allanson and Chris Bando consistently overlooked?

I’ve got his autograph on the same ball as C.C., Juan-Gon, Roberto and Ellis Burks. I’m hoping to travel to a Scrappers game next year and snag Fryman’s for the ball. I tried to get Colon’s that day as well, but he was standing right beside me and kept ignoring me.

You need to grab his attention with some of these.

He probably thought I was some snotty rich kid sitting in the dugout louge with my mom while my dad was busy outsourcing jobs. Truth be told, the 90s was a good time to have a dad who was a grocery store manager. Pepsi and Frito Lay made my youth awesome with free tickets.

Unless it was Kroger I don’t wanna here it!
Kidding, but seriously, I hope it wasn’t Wal-Mart.

It was a privately owned and operated business (at the time). Hawkins Markets! Old Earl Hawkins is a hell of a dude. Started as a fruit stand after he came back from WW2, winning a Purple Heart, and grew it into 7 grocery stores.

i think the best hire would be omar to coach the infield.. but it looks like he still wants to play another year or two

I have no real reason to think Omar can coach. He’s pretty self-absorbed.
I wouldn’t mind seeing him return in a utility role at all.

Are you advocating using Barfield as infield coach?
by danvail on Nov 5, 2009 2:55 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
finally, a use for Mr. Barfield!
by MooneysRebellion on Nov 5, 2009 3:00 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe Jesse Barfield…..sadly he might still be able to hit better than Josh did in his time in Cleveland.

What, exactly, is an infield coach?

He also said as well, when brought in to Texas, he wasn’t sure how to “mentor” Andrus because he does things his way and wasn’t real keen on changing anything about someone else. Manager? Maybe someday. Coach? I think not.

It would be funny if an unemployed, heavily-bearded, drunk Wedge showed up at every game and sat along the third base seats and yelled these things to Acta during the game.
