Even if the Indians had a bunch of money to spend, I don’t see a lot on here that I makes me say “we gotta get THAT guy”.
There are some serviceable pieces that I wouldn’t mind seeing the Indians try to get. Nick Johnson or Justin Duchscherer on incentive-laden contracts. Same with Mike Gonzalez or Rafael Soriano. I see all of them as this year’s Carl Pavano – aka the injury-riddled guy that could be traded at the deadline if they’re playing well.
BTW, Abreu just signed a 2 year extension with LAA.$9 mm per. So he’s off the list.
Raffy Soriano made 77 appearances this year at a 2.92. I don’t think he’s really looking for a make good.
shows how much I paid attention to baseball this year.
yeah, we have no chance of getting either of them.
I’d love to have Nick Johnson, but we don’t really need him with the glut of 1B/DH types we have. I can get behind signing someone to a Pavano like deal to eat some innings and take some away from the bullpen so they don’t get burned through. But I don’t think Duchscherer is that pitcher since he just hitting free agency and could command better money than the Indians can offer.
glut of 1B/DH types? They have Hafner and LaPorta as the starters, with Marte seemingly as the backup at 1B. We’re set if everything goes well, but if LaPorta’s hip is a bigger issue than we think, if Hafner misses 60+ games again, If Marte really can’t break a 700 OPS in the majors, or if Brantley needs some more time in AAA, there’s plenty of available PAs for Nick Johnson.
It seems like the logical thing to do is have LaPorta in left and Andy at 1b to start the season, with Brantley in Columbus. They can use Brantley if LaPorta has to miss time.
I swear that Brantley is going to be a beast in 2010.
why does anyone think Andy should be on this team next year? career ops of 624 in 668 ab for a 1st/3rd basmen this sucks, when are you guy going to give up of this guy?

1. When he actually gets consistent playing time for a period of months and still sucks.
2. When he isn’t coming off a season as the best hitter in Triple-A.
3. When we have an immediate option who is clearly better.

AND ALSO!
Consider that since 2006, Marte has not gotten that “several months of regular playing time” at any level … except for May-through-July of 2009, at Columbus. And in that one opportunity to play every day — really every day — for several months — and really several months — he absolutely raked.
In other words, in the past three seasons, he has absolutely raked every time he was given a full-time position to play for several months. Every time.

Not really. I don’t have huge faith in his abilities, only that he should have gotten a real opportunity way before now. He still may not get one, either.

I know a bait when I see one. You thought to yourself, “How can I add 600 comments to this thread?”

Because when he inevitably goes down with an injury it gives you a chance to see what Jordan Brown can do for 2 months.
Even if he only plays 50 games I don’t think he is going to want to come to a team where his playing time would be contingent on whether or not young player A or B are injured or under performing. Where would you put Johnson unless you are sacrificing time to Marte or LaPorta just to have him? And even if one them falters or is injured why not look at Brown or run out a AAA free agent type since we are rebuilding? Also, Johnson made 5 million last year and performed well for that money, there is no reason to think he is gonna take a huge discount.

We lose no one, we have a stocked system, and we’re young. We’re going to be good.
