via Tony Lastoria, apparently Weglarz had a metal rod inserted into his leg to stabilize the area around the stress facture which has been bothering him since August

Another prospect with a weird injury. I hope that the rosey prognosis holds as I don’t want to go through flexor tendon v 2.0…

Not good, definitely not good.

This sounds remarkably painful.

I think I have the same situation. I broke my leg and ankle in multiple places a few years ago, and while healing, the fibula and tibia began to separate from one another, creating an air gap. I’m still supposed to have another surgery to close the space, I’ve just been putting it off. But I can say that putting a lot of stress on the leg in warm weather results in an absolutely unbearable pain, so it is totally necessary for an athlete to get it done right away.

Good luck with this. You always want to avoid surgery if you can but this looks like a tough bullet to dodge…

Did Weglarz struggle after August? I don’t recall.

I think I rode that at Cedar Point.

Matt Whitney. Sorry, had to be said.

by piersall on Nov 9, 2009 10:09 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

That was a little different. As I recall, Whitney broke his leg in several places and needed multiple surgeries. A rod to stabilize a stress fracture, while not good, seems to be a different beast.

On top of which, we never found out what Whitney might have done at higher levels had he not been injured.

I’m sure that there are multiple stress factures requiring mechanical stabilization that are not career threatening, I just can’t think of any.

“Mechanical stabilization” is a phrase I never want to hear my Dr. utter. That sounds brutal.

I was just thinking this as I reopened this discussion just now. You beat me to it!
