Around SBN: SB Nation interviews Jerome Bettis

Chien-Ming Wang, still rehabilitating after right shoulder surgery, will not be tendered a contract by the Yankees Saturday.

Even though I have never been as high on him as others, this seems like our typical pitcher signing. Also possibly nontendered, Kevin Correia could be a name to watch. Although his success came in the NL West.

[UPDATE]: The Indians have non-tendered the arbitration-eligible Jose Veras and Anthony Reyes. In addition, they removed Adam Miller from the roster. There are now 37 on the Indians 40-man Roster [Ryan].

What is Wang’s health status? If he looks like he can pitch a substantial portion of 2010, even given his brutal 2008-2009, I’m guessing he is out of our price range.

by APV on Dec 12, 2009 2:45 PM EST reply actions

The 29-year old is unlikely to pitch in the majors before May 1, but should draw plenty of interest.

I’ve been wondering why the Yankees are skimping on this? Is his shoulder that bad? He’s no ace, but he keeps the ball on the ground and in the park.

by xrickx on Dec 12, 2009 2:51 PM EST reply actions

Also nontendered: Kelly Johnsonand Garrett Atkins

by westbrook on Dec 12, 2009 2:53 PM EST reply actions

Johnson’s not really a glove guy, and he’s left-handed. Atkins doesn’t do anything particularly well, at least not well enough to warrant a shot ahead of Andy Marte. I bet Atkins ends up with the Twinkies. The Indians want a RH bat to play the corners and the outfield — if Troy Glaus played outfield, he’d make perfect sense. Even so, LaPorta can just slide out to LF on the days when a tough lefty is around, and Glaus can play 1B. Other days, he can fill in for Hafner at DH. If the Indians wait this one out long enough and Glaus is still around in late January, I’d like to see it.

by xrickx on Dec 12, 2009 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I’m expecting the Indians to sign a corner guy – Glaus would make some sense, and there’s plenty of others that will be available next month.

foxsports speculating that we’re looking at thames. do not want.

by emil minty on Dec 12, 2009 7:00 PM EST up reply actions

If it’s a minor league deal, who cares? Besides the only way he’d get any real playing time in Cleveland is if LaPorta is slow returning from surgery and Hafner’s shoulders fall off, and I’d like to think that Hafner’s shoulders are being held together by more than silly string.

by GoTribe028 on Dec 12, 2009 7:59 PM EST up reply actions

This is assuming the Indians want LaPorta sliding around. I have an inkling they want him to settle in at a position and work at it steadily, getting as many reps there as possible, as he’s not considered all that good at either spot.

by Jay on Dec 12, 2009 8:33 PM EST up reply actions

I still think (SSS aside) that LaPorta was above average in the OF.

by westbrook on Dec 12, 2009 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

Even if he was good, he should be playing 1B full time. Brantley is ready for a full season audition in left field, and that leaves LaPorta at 1B. My hope is that we never have to find out what kind of outfielder LaPorta is, which means Brantley, Sizemore, and Choo are all having productive, healthy seasons in the OF.

by xrickx on Dec 13, 2009 12:05 AM EST up reply actions

Wow, and to think we almost traded Laffey for Atkins.

Jonny Gomes non-tendered by the Reds.

He’s an absolute hack in the outfield no matter what metric you use. Doesn’t play first base, but he’s another right-handed bat to spell the lefties in the outfield corners or at DH.

by xrickx on Dec 12, 2009 5:09 PM EST reply actions

I saw that yesterday and thought he might be a good pickup for the Indians.

Adam Miller non-tendered.

by xrickx on Dec 13, 2009 12:18 AM EST reply actions

Also non-tendered Anthony Reyes and Jose Veras.

by xrickx on Dec 13, 2009 12:19 AM EST up reply actions

Let’s sign Matt Capps.

by westbrook on Dec 13, 2009 2:40 AM EST reply actions

He’ll go to a team that needs a closer (Tigers, Orioles, Marlins, Nats) or a team with cash who can pay him $3M to set up (Red Sox, Yanks, Mariners, Dodgers).

by xrickx on Dec 13, 2009 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

I kind of wanted to keep Veras. I’m also sort of intrigued to see what we do with these three extra roster spots.

by APV on Dec 13, 2009 11:25 AM EST reply actions

my question is what happened between the time we decided to remove Pino from the 40 and now? Has the FA market cheapened? Carroll?

by westbrook on Dec 13, 2009 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

I think the idea is that you keep the guy rostered, let him know that you like him, let all the other teams fill their rosters up to 38, 39, or 40, and then non-tender him when he won’t agree to a cheap deal to avoid arbitration. Now, other teams have full or nearly full rosters, and it’s unlikely that they want to go give Jose Veras a major league deal when Matt Capps and Mike Gonzalez and Octavio Dotel are still floating around.

by xrickx on Dec 13, 2009 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

I think this is right.

by APV on Dec 13, 2009 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

Also, Pino was never on the 40-man roster. He was rule five eligible for the first time and the Indians took the risk not to roster him.

That is very good news. I think Shapiro played his hand as well as it could be played.

by MickS on Dec 13, 2009 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

I’m happy to hear that for Reyes sake. Going through rehab is difficult enough, without having to pack up and start over with new trainers, coaches, and doctors. Maybe it works out for the Indians sake too. All of his injury trouble related to the same elbow, if the fix works, maybe they get something worth having.

Remeber, Reyes already did his job for the Indians. He covered for Paul Byrd, admirably, I might say, at the end of 2008. That saved you all about $2 million. The rest is gravy.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.
Oh, and could you get Mike Adams for the bullpen, please?

by jillsinmo on Dec 13, 2009 3:35 PM EST reply actions

Well, Ryan Garko’s available.

by Ryan on Dec 13, 2009 5:53 PM EST reply actions

let’s face it. ryan garko is always available.

by Brick. on Dec 13, 2009 5:57 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

And to be honest, getting him cheap, using him strictly against LHP (career line: .313/.392/.495), and turning him into Eduardo Perez part deux might not be the worst idea. I’d like to think the team will instead play its younger(ish) guys, but somehow I’m not optimistic.

by APV on Dec 13, 2009 6:02 PM EST up reply actions

I think Fernando Tatis is the ideal, but that might make him too ideal for other teams with more cash and PT. Then I think you run into guys like Glaus and Garko.

And I agree, APV. If he’s brought on to strictly face LHP, you don’t get much more productive than that. Otherwise, he’d be a starter.

by xrickx on Dec 13, 2009 6:21 PM EST up reply actions

Interesting that Shoppach had a trade market, but not Garko.

by Roger Dorn on Dec 13, 2009 6:36 PM EST up reply actions

Positional value, I would assume.

Welcome back, Sandy! ATALECG...

by USSChoo on Dec 13, 2009 6:45 PM EST up reply actions

The Giants didn’t hide the fact that they’ve made offers to some free agents (Nick Johnson, Andy LaRoche?). Teams knew Garko was on his way out. Despite what all the media outlets were saying, there’s no evidence the Indians made contract offers to any free agent catchers. And, contrary to reports, the Indians could have afforded Shoppach’s salary. With so many teams needing catchers this offseason, Tampa would not have been able to sign Shoppach as a free agent for one year and $2.5 – $3.5M.

by xrickx on Dec 13, 2009 7:51 PM EST up reply actions
