Bad as it is, it’s still not Sabathia and Teixiera and Burnett

Yeah, I know. I mean, it could be worse is all I’m saying.

There’s really no difference. The Red Sox offered Tex 8 years, $170M. He just took the Yankees money instead.

They bought Beckett and Lowell by absorbing Lowell’s salary, in which he was owed $16M at the time coming off a horrendous season. They bought Schilling. Dice-K. Drew.

Manny Ramirez, whom they previously bought, was flipped for Jason Bay.

Renteria and Lugo didn’t work out, and the Sox paid $11M for Renteria to play elsewhere and $9M for Lugo to play elsewhere next year.

Drafting good players is one thing (and it’s easier to do when you can go above slot multiple times to do it). Actually letting those prospects mature into established players with your club is a whole different story. And even then, developing two starting pitchers (giving them a real shot to be a part of the rotation) in an entire regime is not a sign of success. In Theo’s regime, they’ve developed Lester and I’ll count Bronson Arroyo, since he got his first real shot in Boston. And even then, developing players is a hell of a lot easier when you have surrounded them with the top free agents.

So yes, it’s the same thing. The Red Sox are the Yankees, and the Yankees are the Red Sox.

Boston has done a hell of a lot more good developing than the Yankees.

i shed a tear, really.

don’t want to start a new thread but there’s rumor of a 3-team blockbuster that involves the Phillies, Toronto, Halladay, Lee, and an unknown team.

by ASP on Dec 14, 2009 3:47 PM EST reply actions

The Mariners are supposedly the third team.

by xrickx on Dec 14, 2009 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

Heyman twitter: 3-way trade agreed to with halladay going to phils, cliff lee to mariners. phils trying to lock up roy now.

by ASP on Dec 14, 2009 4:00 PM EST up reply actions

If only Halladay were an improvement over Lee, this would be a win for the Phillies.

Wait 'til next millennium!

by emd2k3 on Dec 14, 2009 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

Could be that they think Halladay is cheaper to extend considering Lee is supposedly demanding 23 mill per year

by 7foot3 on Dec 14, 2009 4:10 PM EST up reply actions

Cliff Lee’s no dummy. He sees the advantage of having Gutierrez patrolling centerfield and not playing in Citizens Bank Park.

by APV on Dec 14, 2009 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

does that really compensate for the AL/NL talent differential? Kliff owned NL hitters.

by emil minty on Dec 14, 2009 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

You know what, though? Cliff dominated AL-hitters for the previous 1.5 seasons, too.

by APV on Dec 14, 2009 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

Reports are saying that Halladay will agree to an extension as part of the deal. Lee seems intent on pitching 2010 and then raking in the big bucks. Halladay doesn’t have to be better than Lee for this to be a win for the Phillies.

by FredOx on Dec 14, 2009 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

I was kind of joking.

Wait 'til next millennium!

by emd2k3 on Dec 14, 2009 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

Considering that Lee’s current contract in no way reflects what he’s worth, I can’t say I blame him. The only problem I have with it – he is worth on the market what only a few teams can actually afford to pay. And pitching for two of those teams will render him dead to me.

Welcome back, Sandy! ATALECG...

by USSChoo on Dec 15, 2009 2:25 AM EST up reply actions

I’d take Halladay over Lee any day of the week.

by ASP on Dec 14, 2009 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

Somebody want to explain the Phillies thinking here? Halladay’s cheaper to lock up or something?

by afh4 on Dec 14, 2009 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

Seems to be the crux of it. The twitteratti were saying Lee wasn’t going to give the Phils a discount, while Halladay would sign for less than a Santana-esque extension if it meant being on a winning team.

Also, Cliff Lee refused to sign up for the Phillies Book Club. The Kite Runner discussions were really stalling.

by nickjs21 on Dec 14, 2009 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

The Phillies probably think Halladay is a better bet going forward and he’ll actually sign an extension.

Cliff’s ascension to become an elite pitcher was rather dramatic, and his decline could be just as rapid.

by xrickx on Dec 14, 2009 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

Yea, the only explanation is the willingness to get an extension done.

This is a situation I did not see coming

ESPN’s saying 5 years/82.5 for Lackey. Same per year as Burnett, if I remember.

by afh4 on Dec 14, 2009 4:11 PM EST reply actions

Meanwhile, Toronto gets prospects. It’ll be interesting to see if they get as good or better as the Carrasco et al package the Indians got for Lee. It sounds from the SI article as if the prospects are coming from Seattle — we’ve done pretty well out of their system in the past few years. Anyone know what they still have to give up in exchange as part of this deal?

I imagine Toronto would get prospects from both Philly and Seattle. Hard to speculate without knowing more at this point.

by Roger Dorn on Dec 14, 2009 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry, didn’t see the discussion here.

LAAofA is taking hits left and right this offseason.

by JulioBernazard on Dec 14, 2009 5:40 PM EST reply actions

I read this as “Laffey” at first and was very, very confused.

by Voltaire on Dec 14, 2009 6:25 PM EST reply actions

I will be shocked if Halladay agrees to a guarantee as small as $60 million. Santana got more than twice that in the same situation.

by Jay on Dec 14, 2009 6:48 PM EST reply actions

The Nation is very interested in Lackey and a potential deal could happen if the physical goes well. Nothing is imminent.

It’s hard to imagine someone named Lackey working for The Nation

Yeah, can we not give fans of any team “Nation” status, even snarkily?

This is nauseating.

by Brad D on Dec 14, 2009 10:59 PM EST reply actions

This isn’t really helping me perceive the playing field as level. I’m with Brad, I think I’ll just go be sick now. This isn’t how “sport” is supposed to work.

Oh no, the Big Bad Sox stole Lackey from the poor, cash-strapped, small-market Angels!
