Spring Training 2009 - Discuss Your Plans Here
We've discussed our various Goodyear/Arizona plans in a few different Fanshots/posts, but I thought it might be nice to have one FanPost dedicated to plans to meet up on a day to day basis. Post your plans now, and hopefully closer to the dates little LGT gatherings can be arranged. I'll be there in Goodyear from the 15th-17th, going to the 15th and 16th games.
Let's hear your plans!

I’ll be there somewhere in the vicinity of March 22-28, and going to as many Tribe games in the Goodyear/Phoenix area as possible

just purchased my plane tickets. I’ll be down there March 23-28 and am hoping to make it to Tribe games on the 24th (Goodyear), 25th (Peoria), 26th (goodyear) and 27th (Scottsdale). Anyone around, send me an e-mail as the date gets closer and we can meet up somewhere.

What price did you lock in? I’m watching for the time being and have decided that if I come, my son Ryan is coming too.

I did see a fare last week for $150, though. Not sure if it was direct (out of Boston, for me) or not.

I’m still deciding too. Can we keep this thread on the front page, so we can update?

getting it recced up would at least keep it here longer. i think the moderators can re-active it if it goes dead, which might bring it up to the front as well.

The recs aren’t necessary, we just have to edit the article and click “update date/time published” at the bottom.
I’m pretty sure Mario can do it himself.
Also, for those who don’t realize, the number of FanPosts and FanShots you see on the front page is something you can modify for yourself. I think the default is 10, but mine is set to 20 for everything.

Luckily enough, my brother is moving from San Diego to Chicago next week and I’m helping him drive his car. I think we might be able to stop for a few hours in Goodyear on the way. Do they let fans in the compound before the spring training season starts?
My Dad’s going to be going for a few days at the end of the month. We’re sure to deliver full reports in any case.

I stopped by there today (Saturday) but too late, around 1:30pm. The guy attending the players’ parking lot said they started training around 8:00am and lasted until just after noon. It may last longer when all players arrive, but I would say you should be able to see them train if you stop there in the morning.
There is a nice area (Fields 3-6) where you can watch them train – open to the public with several picnic tables, etc. in an area between the four fields.
Got to walk around the new stadium and it’s pretty cool. The outfield grass looks pretty cool and are cheap ($8). You can get right up next to the fence.
by steincat on Feb 14, 2009 7:01 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
What’s $8… a section of the outfield grass?
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
by westbrook on Feb 14, 2009 9:16 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah – the tickets are pretty expensive, actually. $8 gets you a spot on the grass – but I’ve been to Cubs game in Mesa on the outfield grass and it’s pretty fun. People just bring blankets or chairs or whatever.
The other tickets get up to around $25-30, which seems steep for spring games. But walking around, it’s small enough that there’s not a bad seat in the place.
by steincat on Feb 15, 2009 11:19 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs

I’m talking about Goodyear, not just Phoenix!
by Jay on Feb 16, 2009 4:35 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It goes without saying, but I think population projections for Phoenix are undergoing a fair amount of revision at the moment. Having been there in December/January, there is an awful lot of vacant, and in some cases unfinished, housing in the West Valley area of Phoenix, including Goodyear. Michigan may have bad weather and a crap economy, but at least they have water.
by APV on Feb 16, 2009 4:45 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
How much does water have to do with it? I mean, people aren’t buying houses in general right now, and Phoenix in particular had a lot of housing speculation during the bubble… which means it had a lot farther to crash than a lot of places…
by Logodaedalus on Feb 16, 2009 5:01 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
They were really two points which I did a bad job of expressing. One is that Phoenix’s short-term growth has been slowed in part by the housing collapse, which has had a major impact on construction in the Phoenix area, which is a major industry for Phoenix. The second is that the long-term outlook for Phoenix as a major metro area can’t be considered without considering a long-term view of its water source.
by APV on Feb 16, 2009 5:17 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes. Both points are valid — I was just wondering how closely they were connected, but I guess you didn’t really mean them to be.
by Logodaedalus on Feb 17, 2009 9:46 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Gets pretty simple, Logo. They’re mad at us because we signed a pact about not distributing Great Lakes water. Think about that. They were seriously considering footing the bill for shipping water 1,800 miles, because they believe it’s cheaper than what’s going to happen to them without it.

by supermarioelia on Feb 15, 2009 1:47 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
No – not to watch. You can just walk in to watch practice fields. I was trying to describe the actual stadium where the games will be played.
The practice fields for the Indians are actually about 1/2 mile away from the main stadium. But you can walk and see most of them – there was one that looked like it might be the “super-secret” practice field where Hafner will take BP and Jhonny will take balls at third.

Ah ok, you meant the $8 for the BERM. I dunno, I really hate the BERM….tried it one time at Vero Beach, had a terrible view for 4 innings then got stuck in the worst rainstorm of my life. Ladies in wheelchairs sliding down the BERM, everyone soaked from head to toe….we drove back to Orlando in basically just our underwear. It would’ve made for a great episode of Cops if we’d been pulled over.

Yeah – The one time I was at the Cubs in Hoho Kam was a bachelor party, so it was really good for that. Watch the game off and on, play catch with a whiffleball in the background, and a group of 10 guys can kind of come and go.
Actually paying attention and watching the game, a non-berm seat might be better. But at least in AZ, you can pretty much take the rain factor out, although ladies in wheelchairs is fairly prevalent.

I live about 2.5 hours from Goodyear. I’m pretty busy weekends that time of year, but I’m planning on getting to weekday games the first three weeks. I’ll definitely be there Opening Day (Feb 25).
May try to catch away game (KC) at Surprise March 3, Cubs@Tribe the following day.
Will attend Tuesday, March 10 at Tempe with friend who has Angels tickets. ( We may have two extra seats, by the way.) At Goodyear, vs. Rockies the next day, probably.
Don’t know after that. I’d like to get to a Tucson game (22nd or 28th) because it’s closer to home and for old times sake. But that is looking like a tough week.

I plan on putting on Bermuda shorts and every bit of Indians paraphernalia that I own as well as sun glass and eye-black. I will grab my little league glove and an old ball. I will sit infront of my tv and mindlessly scan it for hours on end for any glimpse of an Indians stat or report.
I also plan on getting my car washed and purchasing the freshly mown grass scent.

by mjschaefer on Feb 13, 2009 10:46 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
yep – I bet that tickets to the Dodgers game will be scarce (along with every game in Glendale)… but one of the great things about the Cactus League is that it is very easy to follow your team wherever they go and it’s cool to check out the different parks. Most are very nice but none are as intimate as Winter Haven (Maryvale, where the Brewers play, might be the closest as far as interacting with the players).

Anybody have an opinion on the Scottsdale/Giants experience? I’ve got most of my tickets purchased already for Goodyear and a game at Mesa/Cubs, but am on the fence about watching the Tribe in Scottsdale. If I don’t go to that game I was thinking about heading down to Tucson for a random Rockies vrs. whoever game to get a good look at Hi-Corbett. Keep in mind, I’m a big fan of old stadiums that smell like beer and not a big fan of corporate- style, resorty golf culture. With the exception of Goodyear, I’m trying to avoid that vibe as much as possible while out there (I’m staying with family in Phoenix.)
by PatBordersHelmet on Feb 20, 2009 9:41 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Can’t make Indians @ Rockies on 3/22? See Hi Corbett and the Tribe…. simultaneously… (woah)
by Logodaedalus on Feb 20, 2009 10:06 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Oh, I think you’ve nailed it. Scottsdale is exactly that, probably the most “resorty golf” feeling of all the cactus parks. [maybe not corporate – it’s still retirees, kids, and frat boys] It’s also, after the Cubs, the most full. I still like it, because it still feels small and comfortable, and has grass outfield seating like most. Hi-Corbett, on the other hand, is exactly what you’re looking for: moderately smelly and old.
Hi-Corbett is also excellent because the minor league games are right there and open to everyone walking around (like a little league park), just like Winter Haven. And that, in my mind, is what takes the experience to another level. I just can’t remember if that was true in Scottsdale.
Of course, Scottsdale is a popular park because you have those senior citzens who have been Giant fans all their lives. I like that. Not so much for the Rockies.
(FYI, it’s been a few years since I was down there. Don’t know about recent changes)

A somewhat off topic post – but it fits in here as well as anywhere. To those of you who will be traveling to Goodyear, please let me know if Chief Wahoo has any presence at the new facility. I’ve been looking at the pictures that have been posted, and while I certainly didn’t look at them to see the Chief, after looking at a bunch of the photos on indians.com and cleveland.com, I just kind of noticed his absence.
I’m not here to start another discussion on the appropriateness of the Chief , I’m just curious to see if he’s been included in the design of the new facilities or not.

Yeah, I got it from a doctor, so I figured it’s legit. It makes a lot of sense. Babies lose a lot of fluids.
by afh4 on Feb 22, 2009 3:13 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Here’s the short course. Alcohol – ethynol – is a diuretic. It inhibits the release of polypetides – hormones – from the anterior pituitary. One of these is Ant-Diuretic-Hormone – ADH – which reduces dehydration, so you lose more water and salts. Pedialyte helps replace that loss. But the other biggy is that the liver converts ethynol to sugar, and one to the intermediate steps is to convert it to a ketone/aldehyde. Folks with liver disease have a build up of this chemical and exhale it with their breath – the well known “fruity” breath of alcoholics. People with normal livers also have an increase in ketones when the drink. This is another big contributor to the hang-over since its toxic to the brain tissue.
Pedialyte and aspirin’ll help, but your still gonna hurt in the moring.
