Grady pulls out of WBC
Slight groin strain, no classic for Grady. can't say I'm unhappy about that. Only downside from a fan perspective is perhaps seeing less of Brantley.

this is good news.
that leaves perez as the guy i’m most worried about.

Yea it is good I think. Though, I was looking forward to him being included in topps’ upcoming WBC set.
I bet he is partly just trying to get out of it.
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

Better title now, thanks.
I’ll still worry about SS Choo. Although I wish I could eschew it. The worrying, that is.

I have a hard time feeling happy about any chinks in Grady’s armor, minor or not.

Yeah, and I actually like the WBC. There is nothing good I take out of this news.

I like the idea but not its current form.
Therefore, I really don’t want any of the Tribe’s expected contributors to partake. I think the management feels the same although they obviously won’t say as much. I think that injuries may be exaggerated to serve as a reason to pull out of the event with some gentle nudging. Hopefully thats the case here (meaning the strain is really minor).
No way Choo or Perez are going if they get a papercut or head cold.
As General Manager of this team, I demand to know when I'm getting a start.

It could be improved, sure, but I still like it.
Thing is, I watched Grady bust it down the line for to beat out a double play on Wednesday. That’s to say, he could just as easily get hurt in a Cactus League game than a WBC game.

Agreed. And I know its a cliche but that’s just how Grady plays.
Hitters are not as much of a concern as pitchers, as it’s mentioned below and everywhere.
I’d love to see Choo perform well in the WBC and become a national hero. Get a team shop open in Seoul and boost the revenue a bit.

and he could get hit by a bus tomorrow, too. i mean, he hurt himself shagging fly balls. it wasn’t even a game. that’s not the point – that you can get hurt anywhere, so just do whatever and roll the dice.
it’s that by staying back at spring training he can take all the days off he needs and get medical attention from the indians.

I guess I’ll by the medical attention from the Indians might be better. But the fact that he needs medical attention makes this bad news, regardless of who is treating it.

so is the wood back thing. but they both seem pretty minor considering how much time there is till the start of the season.

I’m assuming it also means Grady will be held out for a bit in AZ to let the minor pull heal. He felt pain when stealing the base. They’re not going to put him right back out there.
Ben Fran is in center for today’s game.

That’s why I think Brantley should still see a good amount of playing time, especially early in ST – Grady is likely not going to play right away at this point.
Besides that, the Indians know what Grady can do and Grady knows what he needs to work on (mainly trying to keep the Ks in check and hit LHP consistently); it’s Brantley who really needs the ABs right now, and being that he was a high-profile player they acquired for our former ace, it’s very likely Brantley will continue to get consistent playing time for a few more weeks, at least.
Just my 2 cents.

Choo is going almost no matter what. The Indians could have held him back but chose not to. His injury is not likely to recur anyway — he had Tommy John surgery, but it’s not like he’s a pitcher.
The better Choo performs in all venues, but especially while representing his country, the easier it will be for him to be granted a military exemption. I think he is prepared to renounce his citizenship if necessary, but obviously you don’t want it to come to that.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

he’s already left for hawaii, i thought.

I guess the fact that I’m pretty much rooting for South Korea to win behind a massive effort from Choo is a fairly clear sign that this tournament is still a long way from relevance.

Well, that all depends. Are you from South Korea?

I’m from North Carolina. And the thought of rooting against the US team in the World Cup makes my brain implode.

I may cheer for the U.S., but not Jeter.
Signature to be named later.

Are you serious?
Sizemore didn’t want to push it in meaningful games
by Brick. on Feb 27, 2009 1:08 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I mean, if he’s hurt, I’m glad he isn’t playing. I’m sure there is a lower threshold for the WBC than for a regular season game. But Sizemore is hurt. And like I said above, he could hurt himself in a Spring Training game pretty easily. I guess he might not crash into the wall for a Cactus League game, but I don’t see Grady taking it easy otherwise.

Yeah, I wouldn’t be worried about position players playing in the WBC. I was actually looking forward to seeing Grady play centerfield for the USA. It’s the pitchers that I’d be worried about.

sure, the pitchers are a whole different thing.

Again, it’s likely Grady is not going to play for a few days at least; other options like Brantley and Barfield are going to see consistent playing time while Grady heals. Like with Brantley (though not as vital), Barfield needs more at-bats (and more OF playing time if they really plan on utilizing him in the OF, which I presume will be the case).
Just my 2 cents.
