Nice Story Regarding Team USA
Brian McCann obviously has never been to the playoffs.

This reminds me of a great moment during the White Sox/Dodgers spring training game.
About 15 Army soldiers were in attendance at the game. The PA Announcer called attention to them – they stood, and received a rousing standing ovation from the players and crowd.
They had to leave before the end of the game, and when they got up, without prodding, the crowd gave them a second ovation as they filed out.
Signature to be named later.
That’s what has endeared me to the WBC this year. It’s the passion and excitement that the players show while the game is going on that really sells it.
These games are largely meaningless, but when you have professional athletes selling out like it’s a playoff game, it’s hard for it not to be infectious and you get caught up in it.
I was watching the Korea/Japan game last night and you wouldn’t believe the amount of effort and hustle the Koreans were putting on display in the early innings. Every play was a matter of life or death to them.

I watched the last two Korea games pretty much from beginning to end, and man, that’s a fun team to watch. I feel strangely invested in their success now.

This is the part that is becoming less true.
I like the WBC. I put it at least on the level of olympic basketball now. Let’s forget for a second about the imperfections of design- the thing is here and there are a good portion of the best players in the world playing as hard as they can. It’s for real.
Well, meaningless in a historical sense. No one is going to remember the semi-final games 3 years from now and no one is going to remember the US roster for 2009. Not in the same way you remember teams/games from playoffs or World Series or rosters of your favorite team that made it to the playoffs.

The problem is that you can’t ignore the imperfections in design – by playing this thing at the beginning of spring training, you’re insuring that you’ll never get real baseball, at least not from the non-asian squads. They’re playing hard, which is worth something, but too many of them are just not yet ready.
