"I don’t believe that on-base percentage stuff. That’s overrated to me. If you get hits, you’ll be on base. That’s what it’s about."

I know this is so facepalm obvious it’s almost not worth it. But come on. Especially from that guy.

And I get it if a player doesn’t care about the number crunching or how he’s being evaluated, but
A) OBP is telling us something about Brandon’s performance.
B) I don’t think this quote exists if Brandon Phillips has a lifetime OBP > .308.
C) He’s actually crapping on walks and plate patience here, not on-base percentage. And that’s not him ignoring the stats, that’s him ignoring an important process that would probably help his team.

So, he wants to be Adam Dunn without the walks? Awesome career choice.

by Toxicadam on Mar 2, 2009 12:34 AM EST reply actions

If Adam Dunn were a Gold Glove caliber middle infielder, he could lose the walks and do just fine. As Phillips has.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Mar 2, 2009 12:36 AM EST up reply actions

His defense is a huge, huge reason he’s been such a positive impact for the Reds. He’s been a ~4 win player for them over the past two years.

But man that quote sucked. When Dusty Baker says “Be more selective,” you need to stop being a curmudgeon.

I think my point is, Brandon, you could be a lot better. Imagine with that defense and speed/power package what it would do for your team if you could avoid making outs 35-36% of the time.

Nice tags. I almost scrolled right past them.

this is really all i do now. i always read my own post after i hit post and usually notice the mistake then. it stands to reason i would just go through that process before i hit post, but i don’t. and don’t really have a good reason why.

Disclaimer for random Reds fans: even with a poor OBP, Phillips is still a very valuable player becuase of his defense, baserunning, and power (for his position).

That said, it’s a stupid comment.

by Ryan on Mar 2, 2009 10:10 AM EST reply actions

Well, um… 2007 Brandon Phillips, absolutely. 2008 Brandon Phillips, not-so-much.

2008 BP K/AB up, SLG down, CS% up. Curious regression there.

Don't be stupid. PUT IN MELOAN.

by gte619n on Mar 2, 2009 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

The defense still makes up for that at this point. He could almost afford to hit like Jamey Carroll if he continues to field in the manner he has.

by Brad D on Mar 2, 2009 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

Still a 3-win player.

Or, twice as valuable as Asdrubal Cabrera.

maybe not, but he put up an outstanding .392 career mark

by APV on Mar 2, 2009 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

nope. which is fun, because he’s the poster child for the player set most undervalued by traditional thinknig

by Voltaire on Mar 2, 2009 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t know about that exactly. I don’t think it escaped traditional thinkers’ notice when he led the league in slugging while playing second base. He is a first-ballot HOFer, voted in by the traditionalists.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Mar 2, 2009 6:09 PM EST up reply actions

He was also a two-time mvp. Bobby Grich would be a better poster child.

exactly. overall a pretty fun eppisode though. loved using the american splendor guy.

by Brick. on Mar 3, 2009 11:33 AM EST up reply actions

I’m still pissed that despite watching hours and hours of the show I haven’t yet seen the Cleveland episode

by APV on Mar 3, 2009 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

i had to record first run and repeats for litterally 3 months, deleting the 900 runnings of tokyo in order to catch the one time they aired this eppisode a couple weeks ago.

I just think it’s a baseball player not taking value in statistics that aren’t easily measured. You’d never hear a player say RBI aren’t important.

by mjschaefer on Mar 2, 2009 10:42 AM EST reply actions

OBP is very easily measured. It’s easier to measure than batting average.

It’s an accident of history that everyone is familiar with batting average but not OBP.

Why are you surprised that Phillips said that?

He is playing for a manager who became infamous in Chicago for espousing his theory that “walks just clog the bases”.
