Choo Mash in WBC
Korea in the World Baseball Classic finals after defeating Venezuela 10-2. Ideally, a win in the finals would earn Choo an exemption from military service. The WBC finals are on Monday. So temporarily, "Let's go Korea"!
I couldn't find a permalink to this video, so hopefully MLB won't change the link anytime soon.

Couple of important lessons here…
One, um Venezuela, Carlos Silva in a must-win game…what the heck.
And I’ll try not to worry again about Choo’s performance in like 10 atbats in the WBC as an indication of his potential performance for this coming year. He’s still awesome apparently.

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

Watching these Koreans for the past two competitions, you do wonder why more haven’t been signed by MLB scouts. Their 3/4 hitter (Both named Lee, I think) look just as good as Choo does.

Contract issues. Korean free agency is only given to nine-year veterans, and they haven’t even figured out a posting system like Japan. Choo never played for a pro Korean team, the Mariners signed him out of high school.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

If Korea meets USA in the final, do you root for Korea because it means a possible (but not guaranteed) military exemption for Choo? Seems like a moral dilemma to me, I’d actually like to see America win this thing.

``In addition, the law became extinct in 2007 when the military service law was revised. It makes little sense that the exemption is making headlines just one year after the revision.’’

None of us are doing anything but reading tea leaves on this.
My reading is that the law was repealed because it was perceived as too broad or too generous, thus sending the wrong message with regard to military service. A legally guaranteed exemption also denies officials from making appropriate decisions on a case-by-case basis. Does the 25th man on the club deserve an exemption if he’s only just reached draft age? Some years it might be a heroic effort to make it to the semis, while in others only the WBC title would be considered heroic. The WBC is also a new event, so expectations haven’t yet crystallized around it. How good will the competition be? How prestigious will the tournament become?
I think if they want to grant Choo an exemption, they’ll enough reasons. He’s playing with significant injury risk. The Indians (who stand to gain/lose along with Choo) have been cooperative when they didn’t have to be. He likely will compete in the 2010 Asian Games (late November) as well.
Given Choo’s current circumstance and his assistance launching Korea into the finals, the best thing for all parties would be if Korea would agree to grant Choo an exemption conditioned on his participating in the Asian Games. But I don’t know if that kind of negotiation would be considered appropriate.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Choo might also be tempted to become a US citizen in order to keep/earn the $$ that comes with being a baseball player in the prime of one’s career.

I think he will do that, in fact, but only as a last resort.

Yes, this is the hidden leverage that will get Choo his exemption. Of course, no one of authority (MLB, the Indians, the Korean govt) will ever mention it.
But I would root for Korea just for Choo. I’ve got no connection to DeRosa yet.
