Game Thread, White Sox/Indians 3/24
There's actual video for this one, and it's on WTAM with Hamilton & Hegan for once. I believe this is also the first game back for DeRosa since the WBC, so we actually have something approximating a regular-season lineup today.
Carmona starts with a flyout & then walks the next batter, who steals second.

This is bad Fausto. I want good Fausto.
I also want the new MLB.TV player so I can watch without being subjected to the Sox broadcasters. And a pony.

sounded to me like he was getting a little squeezed. i actually want a baserunner an inning so he can work on pitching from the stretch – and induce plenty of DP’s

Yeah, I think that’s right. First batter flew out to right, second & third walked, Thome with the weak grounder, & then AJ flew out to Grady.

White Sox (11-14): CF DeWayne Wise, 2B Chris Getz, 1B Paul Konerko, DH Jim Thome, C A.J. Pierzynski, 3B Josh Fields, RF Brian Anderson, SS Brent Lillibridge, LF Jerry Owens and LHP Aaron Pordea.Indians (8-14-1): CF Grady Sizemore, 3B Mark DeRosa, DH Travis Hafner, C Victor Martinez, SS Jhonny Peralta, LF David Dellucci, RF Ben Francisco, 2B Jamey Carroll, 1B Chris Gimenez and RHP Fausto Carmona.

Anytime you can run a lineup out there with DeWayne Wise, Chris Getz, Brent Lillibridge, and Jerry Owens, you gotta do that.

Why they make Fields bunt is strange. There’s one thing he looks to do in the majors, and that’s slug. But at this point it’s spitting in the wind.

Shapiro on Hafner, from WTAM’s site:
“I feel the only thing not there for him right now is timing. He’s clearly seeing the ball better. There’s no way anyone could see him this year and not see the difference. Just the way he’s taking pitches and tracking the ball, last year he was a different guy. I think it’s just a matter of time before his timing gets down and he starts to hit the ball with authority. He’s finding himself in hitters counts, last year he was almost never in a hitters count. His injury filtered into other parts of his game last year.”

Francisco with a beautiful diving catch to end the inning!

Anyone watching actually see that catch? Hammy got excited, but it doesn’t take much.

I think the next big sabermetric breakthrough is going to be quantifying length of swing.
by afh4 on Mar 24, 2009 5:54 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I thought maybe it would be quantifying not just how often a pitcher misses bats (ie K rate, swing strike%) but how badly the bat misses (ie .2 inches, 1 inch, etc).
If Gameday can track pitch location, the technology to track bat & pitch movement relatively cant be too many more steps id think.
As General Manager of this team, I demand to know when I'm getting a start.

I was sort of kidding. Because “long swing” vs. “short swing” is basically all Hawk Harrelson and Joe Morgan ever talk about.

ah gotcha, got the radio going not mlb tv cause they block it at work. but seriously though someone invent that now for my amusement.

Can someone direct me to last season’s spring training stats?
by JRontherim on Mar 24, 2009 5:59 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i had a hell of a time finding this. i think i went to the offical website – this year’s ST stats, then changed the URL by hand.

I can’t even find where I’d change the makeup. Point being, does anyone remember if Kobayashi sucked this much last year during spring training?

i couldn’t either. i forget what i did. took me forever.

Not much, but something?
by JimmyAB on Mar 24, 2009 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Close enough to show he wasn’t nearly this bad. If he was, I would be more confident in the “keep him on the roster until he blows up, then dump him” idea. But I’m not confident he can come out of the gates pitching even average baseball. I’d much rather Chulk and Jackson than Masa and Chulk.

Impressions from today’s game:
- White Sox fans suck
- It was entertaining to watch Ozzie Guillen come over to yuck it up with Victor before the game and be, what I would call, politely dismissed by Victor
- Fausto did not look good early, but looked great after the 2nd
- Hafner – ugh (even his hit was weak and wouldn’t have been a hit if they had the shift on)
- I wasn’t terribly impressed by Masa, but I didn’t have a great view of him (I was standing in a concession line for much of his inning)
- Jensen Lewis obviously did not look good
- the Budweiser clydesdales, which were hanging around before the game, looked decidedly uncomfortable

imagine 80% of the people around you doing the impression every time. then imagine tripple the number of people with the same obliviousity, and two more guys that want to fight you, all of them wasted and you’ve got a picture of the first inning at u.s. cellular.
