Game Thread, White Sox/Indians 3/24
There's actual video for this one, and it's on WTAM with Hamilton & Hegan for once. I believe this is also the first game back for DeRosa since the WBC, so we actually have something approximating a regular-season lineup today.
Carmona starts with a flyout & then walks the next batter, who steals second.

This is bad Fausto. I want good Fausto.
I also want the new MLB.TV player so I can watch without being subjected to the Sox broadcasters. And a pony.
Lineups, per the PD:
White Sox (11-14): CF DeWayne Wise, 2B Chris Getz, 1B Paul Konerko, DH Jim Thome, C A.J. Pierzynski, 3B Josh Fields, RF Brian Anderson, SS Brent Lillibridge, LF Jerry Owens and LHP Aaron Pordea.Indians (8-14-1): CF Grady Sizemore, 3B Mark DeRosa, DH Travis Hafner, C Victor Martinez, SS Jhonny Peralta, LF David Dellucci, RF Ben Francisco, 2B Jamey Carroll, 1B Chris Gimenez and RHP Fausto Carmona.
So I decide to give the Sox guys a chance and turn up the volume and the first thing I hear is “the greatest offensive player I’ve ever seen was Rickey Henderson.”
He could have said much worse
So 2009.

Fields lays down a bunt to get on, tries to go to 2B on the hit & run & gets nailed by Victor when the “hit” part of that isn’t executed.
DISCLAIMER: I may be bitter.
Why they make Fields bunt is strange. There’s one thing he looks to do in the majors, and that’s slug. But at this point it’s spitting in the wind.
Steel Nick
I could be watching this in theory, but I can’t deal with Harrelson. Plus it’s nice to hear the regular WTAM duo. Makes it feel more springlike to me for some reason.

Shapiro on Hafner, from WTAM’s site:
“I feel the only thing not there for him right now is timing. He’s clearly seeing the ball better. There’s no way anyone could see him this year and not see the difference. Just the way he’s taking pitches and tracking the ball, last year he was a different guy. I think it’s just a matter of time before his timing gets down and he starts to hit the ball with authority. He’s finding himself in hitters counts, last year he was almost never in a hitters count. His injury filtered into other parts of his game last year.”

And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful
Wife
And you may ask yourself-well…how did I get here?

I’m going to switch to the WTAM feed in a bit, but I want to watch Fausto for at least this inning as I have not seen him yet this spring.

I’ve got no baseball on my actual physical radio. Unless a guy who sounds like Kosar is being interviewed.
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
For what it’s worth (and it’s a lot), George Lombard went 3/5 with 3 RBI’s in a minor league game yesterday.
(and it’s not a lot)

sorry, i’ve missed a whole bunch of game day threads. who the heck is george lombard & where did he come from? i don’t remember him in the 100 prospect list from lastoria or hearing about him in the minors.
He’s not a prospect, just some roster filler. He’s been around for a while, you can see him at baseball-reference here.

DeRosa hitting made me think to look up what Stevens did this spring with the Cubs, guess he got sent down a week ago:
Stevens, a reliever picked up in the Mark DeRosa deal, allowed eight runs — six earned — in 6 2/3 innings

I’m mock drafting on Yahoo. Took Grady 4th overall. I have Santana, Webb and Halladay in my rotation. Why am I picking so many SPs? Because they are there?

by Gradyforpresident on Mar 24, 2009 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions
I ended up with Sizemore and Webb yesterday, but not Santana. Mock drafts do not prepare one to draft with you guys, however. Mock drafters have much less respect for Lee, Wood, Peralta, Martinez, blah, blah, blah. Plus they don’t hate Jeter and A.J.
Jeter? I move him to my do not draft list. I know, irrational, but you have to draw a line somewhere.
Signature to be named later.
My teams are always Yankees free zones. I love the No Draft List. In football, my teams are Ravens free zones. Victory is not worth the price of one’s eternal soul, especially in a league with no $$$ on the line.

“They have Carl Pavano at #3. And then after that they have problems”
After that? AFTER Pavano? I have miles more confidence in Reyes and SLewis than I do Pavano.
Anyone watching actually see that catch? Hammy got excited, but it doesn’t take much.

I thought maybe it would be quantifying not just how often a pitcher misses bats (ie K rate, swing strike%) but how badly the bat misses (ie .2 inches, 1 inch, etc).
If Gameday can track pitch location, the technology to track bat & pitch movement relatively cant be too many more steps id think.
As General Manager of this team, I demand to know when I'm getting a start.
I was sort of kidding. Because “long swing” vs. “short swing” is basically all Hawk Harrelson and Joe Morgan ever talk about.
i had a hell of a time finding this. i think i went to the offical website – this year’s ST stats, then changed the URL by hand.
the only thing worse than when these two start yucking it up, is when you miss the beginning and don’t know what the yuck they’re even talking about.

I love the uncertainty over whether they’ll bother playing extra innings.
DISCLAIMER: I may be bitter.
Impressions from today’s game:
- White Sox fans suck
- It was entertaining to watch Ozzie Guillen come over to yuck it up with Victor before the game and be, what I would call, politely dismissed by Victor
- Fausto did not look good early, but looked great after the 2nd
- Hafner – ugh (even his hit was weak and wouldn’t have been a hit if they had the shift on)
- I wasn’t terribly impressed by Masa, but I didn’t have a great view of him (I was standing in a concession line for much of his inning)
- Jensen Lewis obviously did not look good
- the Budweiser clydesdales, which were hanging around before the game, looked decidedly uncomfortable
White Sox fans suck
and those are just the whitesox fans in arizona.
carlton fisk is a hall of famer, buddy.
2 sets of White Sox fans behind me. One felt compelled to do his best Hawk impression of ’hegone on every K, the other was generally surprised it was sunny in Arizona.
