Game Thread: Indians vs. Padres, March 25
It's Spring in Arizona, and I hear they're playing more baseball. Lineups per the PD, as Castro is off gallivanting somewhere:
Indians (8-14-2): CF Grady Sizemore, 2B Asdrubal Cabrera, DH Travis Hafner, SS Jhonny Peralta, RF Ryan Garko, C Kelly Shoppach, 1B Tony Graffanino, 3B Andy Marte, LF Trevor Crowe and RHP Carl Pavano.
Padres (5-16-3): CF Jody Gerut, 2B David Eckstein, RF Brian Giles, 1B Adrian Gonzalez, DH Cliff Floyd, LF Chase Headley, 3B Edgar Gonzalez, C Henry Blanco, SS Luis Rodriguez and RHP Kevin Correia.

Missed the top of the first, but looks like single for Grady, triple for Asdrubal, single for Hafner scored 2 runs. GIDP Peralta and some sort of out for Garko.
Only one right now, Grady was driven in by Cabrera & then Hafner drove him in.

I’m not sure if these announcers (Padres crew) know what they are talking about, but they really like Pavano’s changeup.
Sadly, the mlb.com guys are the Indians guys. I think it’s Mark Schwab &.. some other dude.

Jim Rosenhaus. Yes, they’re Indians guys.

It would’ve been strange if the Padres color guy broke The Scott Lewis Story. It’d be even stranger if he called it “the biggest story of the spring, other than Adam Miller”

I’m listening to the Padres Radio network. I got them by clicking on the audio on mlb.com. Must not be the same for everyone.
You should have two options, one of which is the Padres’ feed, the other labeled “mlb.com”

What kind of AB did Hafner have? Where did his hit drop/land?

Nah, we’re just talking about the Padres after some reference the Indians’ radio guys made to them having a lot of brother tandems.

Apparently, Nate Robertson sprained his thumb today. Not sure if it’s serious, but it is his pitching hand.
Cut it off!

Pavano appears to have found it again. Zachson begins thinking about where in Columbus he should get an apartment.
How about if he just gets an apartment in Mansfied?

I will not survive in the real world. I was given a task yesterday with no deadline and no ASAP request. I did it today and was yelled at for turning it in four hours late.
Mets ranked No. 5 at FanGraphs. Indians Top 4 (and all AL teams Top 4). My guess on the Final 4 rankings:
4. Tribe
3. D-Rays
2. Yankees
1. Red Sox
I don’t know how anyone could put the Yankees above any of those three teams.
So 2009.

By which I mean, their position players are aging and overrated, their farm system not so great, their ownership crazy, and Cashman only a good GM because he has insane resources.
So 2009.
by Gradyforpresident on Mar 25, 2009 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions
Their being overrated has no bearing on their raw quality.
I assume that major league talent is being rated on a 2009-only basis, and on that basis, the Yankees are in a commanding position with their new signings. Remember, those guys (and their contracts) will never look better than they do now.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
It’s either Indians or Red Sox 1-2.
So 2009.

income stream. the yankees just have so much money, and they’re about to get more from the new stadium. they’re playing a different game than the indians and rays, and pretty much a different game from boston, too.
Yes, but how does that make them a better franchise, at all? It makes them richer, not smarter, and I’ve got to believe FanGraphs places more value on the latter.
So 2009.
by Gradyforpresident on Mar 25, 2009 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions
i thought the idea of best franchise is which franchise is going to have the best chance of winning in the near-to-mid-range future. being that much richer than everyone else almost gives them a different category, like their farm system includes every other teams’ best unsigned players.
I think that is how they’re doing it. It’s based on how happy their fans should be about the club at this moment.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
when does the current CBA run out?
So 2009.

I think the economic environment has put a real crimp in those new stadium revenues.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
i’m really wondering what the downturn is going to mean for the Rays. Tampa is a wasteland right now. they had trouble getting fans before, now the unemployment rate there is 12 percent and people are just walking out of mortgages and moving. although maybe those weren’t the people who would have gone to games anyway. who knows?
Maybe the most interesting grade the Indians will get will be Ownership. I would not be surprised to see a B or B+ or even higher grade.
So 2009.

Interesting, of course, to the idiot Cleveland.com’ers who don’t read FanGraphs, but still.

They have been critical of other ownership groups for being too involved in baseball operations. In that respect, I’m sure the Indians will get an “A,” but I don’t know if that’s the whole of the criteria.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

So I guess we’re happy with Pavano’s performance? I’m interested in Adam’s take if he was the same all six innings or if his one bad inning was truly an aberration.
Why isn’t Adam twatting his reactions to the game?

Huh, that is confusing. The box score has Lombard taking Crowe’s spot in RF, but the announcers were both saying that Crowe had hit that homer.

I’d say that these guys might’ve confused Lombard & Crowe (that is, Lombard actually hit that one out), but you’d think they’d notice because Lombard has a.. uh.. darker complexion than Crowe.
