Game Thread: Indians vs. Padres, March 25

It's Spring in Arizona, and I hear they're playing more baseball.  Lineups per the PD, as Castro is off gallivanting somewhere:

Padres (5-16-3): CF Jody Gerut, 2B David Eckstein, RF Brian Giles, 1B Adrian Gonzalez, DH Cliff Floyd, LF Chase Headley, 3B Edgar Gonzalez, C Henry Blanco, SS Luis Rodriguez and RHP Kevin Correia.

Tribe up 2-0 in the bottom of the first. I tuned in for the bottom of the first so I don’t know how they scored.

Missed the top of the first, but looks like single for Grady, triple for Asdrubal, single for Hafner scored 2 runs. GIDP Peralta and some sort of out for Garko.

3. D-Rays
2. Yankees
1. Red Sox

I don’t know how anyone could put the Yankees above any of those three teams.

Their being overrated has no bearing on their raw quality.

I assume that major league talent is being rated on a 2009-only basis, and on that basis, the Yankees are in a commanding position with their new signings. Remember, those guys (and their contracts) will never look better than they do now.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

income stream. the yankees just have so much money, and they’re about to get more from the new stadium. they’re playing a different game than the indians and rays, and pretty much a different game from boston, too.

by TheDanimal on Mar 25, 2009 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, but how does that make them a better franchise, at all? It makes them richer, not smarter, and I’ve got to believe FanGraphs places more value on the latter.

So 2009.

by Gradyforpresident on Mar 25, 2009 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

i thought the idea of best franchise is which franchise is going to have the best chance of winning in the near-to-mid-range future. being that much richer than everyone else almost gives them a different category, like their farm system includes every other teams’ best unsigned players.

by TheDanimal on Mar 25, 2009 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that is how they’re doing it. It’s based on how happy their fans should be about the club at this moment.

Romero at SS, Valdez at 2B, LOMBARD BABY in RF. He is going to make this team.

Marte nullifying earlier heroics. Nice.

Anyone sees Marte’s error yesterday? It was pathetic.

Shoppach with a homer, sounds like he destroyed it.

Is anyone getting blocked from listening to this game? It’s saying to me that I need to upgrade to MLB.tv premium.

hmm, this is weird.

by Ryan on Mar 25, 2009 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I occasionally get a message like that… It usually means that I have to close and reopen my browser. I don’t know why it does that.

by Logodaedalus on Mar 25, 2009 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Shoppach shows how it’s done. Major Yardage.

by JimmyAB on Mar 25, 2009 6:13 PM EDT reply actions

I gotta say, Ivan Nova is an awesome name. Kinda sounds like he’d be a villain in a superhero movie.

His brother Avon, though palindromic, is not nearly as badass.

Trevor Crowe also hits one out, “may have left the complex” say the radio guys.

My favorite reaction to this by them: “Good grief!”

by JimmyAB on Mar 25, 2009 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Crowe hits a long ball completely out of the ballpark.

by JimmyAB on Mar 25, 2009 6:18 PM EDT reply actions

I thought Lombard took over for Crowe? JW

I think Lombard took over in right & Crowe’s in CF for Grady.

In the MLB box score, it says Josh Barfield took over for Sizemore

Tribe in '09!!

by indiansfan20062000 on Mar 25, 2009 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah, they just fixed the box score. Lombard took over for Garko in RF, Crowe’s still in LF. Confusing!

DISCLAIMER: I may be bitter.

by zempf on Mar 25, 2009 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh, that is confusing. The box score has Lombard taking Crowe’s spot in RF, but the announcers were both saying that Crowe had hit that homer.

DISCLAIMER: I may be bitter.

by zempf on Mar 25, 2009 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d say that these guys might’ve confused Lombard & Crowe (that is, Lombard actually hit that one out), but you’d think they’d notice because Lombard has a.. uh.. darker complexion than Crowe.

DISCLAIMER: I may be bitter.

by zempf on Mar 25, 2009 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Box score now has Crowe in Left, Barfield in Center and Lombard in Right

by JRontherim on Mar 25, 2009 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

That clears a lot of things up

Ok…so I was sitting right behind Shapiro and Antonetti in the 2nd row for today’s game…I’ll post my reactions in a little bit

by APV on Mar 25, 2009 7:03 PM EDT reply actions

I’m glad this happened to one of our more restrained members.

by NickFantana on Mar 25, 2009 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

So 2009.

by Gradyforpresident on Mar 25, 2009 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

And then posted the hilariousness …

“Antonetti, after seven Budweisers, not-so-casually grabbed my shirt and slurred out, ’Fausto is going to win the Cy Young. Groundballs, baby. Groundballs.”

So 2009.

by Gradyforpresident on Mar 25, 2009 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

while I had two tasty Fat Tires, they had decidedly lighter fare

by Jay on Mar 25, 2009 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not sure if this is code for “They drank light beer” or just that they had a salad. If it’s the former, I’m going to have confused emotions.

by NickFantana on Mar 25, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Water (for Shapiro) and what looked like Gatorade (for Antonetti)

by APV on Mar 25, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks for clearing this up, I was wild with concern that these guys drank Coors Light or something……shudders…

by NickFantana on Mar 25, 2009 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

YES I CAN’T WAIT !!!

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
