View from Peoria (with Shapiro and Antonetti)

So I wander up to the ticket window at Peoria for today's game at about 11:30 and ask for something behind home plate. She says she can get me 2nd row. I say, "sounds good." Little did I know I would end up sitting right behind Chris Antonetti (right in the picture above) for the game and Mark Shapiro (left) for the last 4 innings. I introduced myself, but I'm naturally pretty hesitant to insert myself too much into the conversations of people I don't know, so I didn't do much other than that. I did however listen in on their conversations and peek over their shoulders a bit during, what turned out to be, a great game. Some thoughts and observations from the game...
First off...Antonetti spent much of the first part of the game reading through scouting reports from other teams which appeared to be little more than a reprint of the stuff you get off Rotoworld. I did notice, however, that while Antonetti didn't pay much attention when the Indians were at bat, he watched every pitch Pavano threw.
My reaction to Pavano's outing was that I thought he got very lucky. His breaking stuff seemed to be working and clearly had the Padres hitters off-balance. But his fastball, especially over the first three innings, didn't seem nearly as effective. I thought he was afraid to throw it in the strike zone and as a result was dancing around the zone for the first couple innings. When he was in the zone the Padres were making pretty solid contact. Although his final line doesn't look bad, I thought he was one cracked Brian Giles bat away from giving up 5 runs instead of 2. For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure I overheard Shapiro and Antonetti say they were pleased with his outing and that after getting his pitches up the first few innings, he brought them back down and did a better job of getting some sink on his pitches.
Hafner is still a big guy, but talking with someone else, Shapiro acknowledged he's lost 15-20 pounds. I thought he looked better at the plate than yesterday, but still not great. He made solid contact on his first inning single but didn't get any elevation on any of his hits. Shapiro said he has consistently gotten himself into great hitters counts this spring, but has been behind on everything he's swung at.
When Crowe hit his HR to right (which was huge), Antonetti and Shapiro exchanged a raised eyebrow glance. After the inning, chatting with Skinner and Wedge, Shapiro said something along the lines of, "Joel told Kelly that's how you hit a real HR".
Shapiro and Antonetti seemed impressed/happy with what they saw out of Wood, Smith and Chulk. They said Wood was working on his cutter in yesterday's minor league game and were pleased to see him get a little extra work (courtesy of awful defense) today. They seemed impressed with Smith. I wasn't sure if these comments were about Chulk, but they were made by Shapiro while Chulk was pitching - "He's better than Kobayashi," "He's one of the top 12 guys we have in camp," "I've had four GMs tell me how good he looks." So I think things look good for Chulk, although Shapiro told Antonetti they're not in a position where they have to waive him (i.e. they can send him down to Columbus, at least for awhile).
Shapiro was talking about a conversation with Kevin Towers (SD GM) and said something along the lines of, "Kevin was saying, 'you guys are trying to cut down from 27 or 28 to get to 25 - we're trying to get up to 25 from 17 or 18.'" To which Mark said, "that's not good, Kevin". I laughed (on the inside).
Antonetti said it is a privelage to watch Sizemore play. Marte looks like a guy who doesn't know exactly why he's out there. The errors yesterday and today were both just terrible. That said, his HR to left center was impressive.
All in all, an awesome game.

Good stuff. What an awesome seat to have during the game. Anyone else around you seem as interested as you were in Shapiro’s and Antonetti’s conversation?

the only other person in my row was a 8-year old kid from Minnesota. Only 3500 people in total at the game. So no, no one even seemed aware who they were.

So are you taking notes through the game and just tyring to commit it all to memory?
Can’t get much better than that. I am stuck in the office all day and you are watching to game with Shapiro and Antonetti.
Wonder how long it takes for someone with the Indians to point out that their conversations have made it to the internet. There will probably be two empty rows around their seats the rest of Spring Training. :)

OK, we have to ask: Did you site-drop LGT?
So 2009.

No. Although if they read it, my name and occupation might have rung a bell. My conversation with Antonetti was extremely brief (he didn’t seem too talkative), and pretty brief with Shapiro as well. I had already heard them talking about how hard it was to walk around without getting stopped by fans.

Brick you’re really not that far away from being a GM as some would have you think….

Adam -
I was also at the game this afternoon and concur. Pavano looked really deliberate in his delivery and that didn’t seem to contribute to his accuracy.
Don’t forget the back-to-back web gems from Asdrubal at second base – he dove to the hole for one and threw out the runner from his back. Next batter gave a hard shot that would have ate up Barfield, but Droobs handled it not problem.
I’m jealous about the seat you grabbed – mine was a walk-up at gametime and netted a seat behind home plate, but yours seemed like a much better spending of $23.

It was unreal. Perfect baseball day. And the 3 dingers on the day were all classic.
Shoppach jacked it and sprinted around the bases.
Marte looked giddy while crossing home plate and high-fiving Shoppach
Crowe absolutely crushed the ball over the lawn area in right, and sprinted as well.
Classy baseball. It’s good to see.

One other note – Garko does NOT look like a RF. He blew a pretty basic grounder through the infield, right through the wickets.

You going to tomorrow’s game in Goodyear by any chance?

Unfortunately no. I’m here for school, and Wednesday’s schedule has classes that end at 1pm. May try to grab the Cubs game in Mesa on Sunday, but booked up until then. Are you around through the weekend? If so, let me know if you are going to Sunday’s game.

Unfortunately no. I’ll be at tomorrow’s game in Goodyear, Friday in Scottsdale, but I head back to Boston on Saturday.

Alum – yeah. I guess only an NU grad would put a team that has never, in their history, made the NCAA field of 64/65 teams as their favorite for NCAA basketball.
I remember seeing last season that you were a student there – be sure to schedule morning classes so you can make the cheap weekday day games at Wrigley during April and May.

Shapiro was reading a few printouts as well. The ones I saw were basically everything put up today on indians.com (e.g. Lisa Winston’s articles) and a NY Times article on pollsters.

Great post. Some sort of rotation should be established to sit behind them!
The raised eyebrows at Crowe’s shot niggles at something I’ve been thinking about – I’m all for giving Barfield a shot at the 25th spot, simply because of his newfound versatility, good doobiness and speed, and that it is the last guy on the bench after all.
But to me the primary “real” necessity for that spot is the ability to put up a decent at bat in a pinch hitting role, and I’m just not sure Josh qualifies.
by mcrose on Mar 25, 2009 9:05 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Crowe isn’t a much better candidate for designated pinch-hitter. I think that job goes to a platoon of Dellucci and Shoppach/Garko.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
by Jay on Mar 25, 2009 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wasn’t really pimping Crowe for the spot, despite the initial association. I think he needs steady work. But so does Josh. I just keep coming back to the fact that, at this point, the only designated (primary) role for Barfield is pinch runner and backup 2B.
I realize that in a way its a functional demotion for him not to go to Columbus and work on his hitting, but despite his learning new positions in the last few weeks, he’s going to have to learn how to deal with a ML at bat at some point, and since he’s not a starter, that’s a bit of a hurdle.
Josh is a great athlete and still young – the niggling thought is simply that until he learns to work the count, he’s not going to get a lot of at bats in Cleveland.
by mcrose on Mar 25, 2009 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, being the last guy on the bench isn’t exactly conducive to developing your hitting skills, but it’s still a major-league job, and if Josh can play the outfield, it makes him a more valuable commodity than if he had remained just a second baseman.

What do you think scenario – Valgood has opened some eyes with his ability to play SS as well as 2B, Cannizaro is the AAAA player at Columbus pencilled for SS, not on anybody’s agenda. Would you prefer Barfield at Columbus getting fairly steady at bats at his old and new positions, and Graffinino on the ML roster to start the season?
Speculatin’ is all…
by mcrose on Mar 25, 2009 11:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The funny thing about both Josh and Crowe is that were either to have any success in Cleveland, I’m pretty sure they’d be huge fan favorites. Barfield is always all smiles and Crowe is one of those little guys who is always going full speed.
And I just remembered another observation from Shapiro and Antonetti. Apparently Crowe is a terrible slider – always sliding too late and jamming himself. They commented today after his slide into 3rd.
by APV on Mar 25, 2009 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Crowe spent some time on the DL already for that – something they’d remember fer sure.
by mcrose on Mar 25, 2009 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the new reality is that the time has passed for Josh to develop as a hitter. At this point, his best/highest use is as a utility player, and if he does that well and earns a good reputation, he’ll be doing it for several more years. At some point over that time, the situation may arise where he plays every day for a few months, so he may get a second chance as a hitter that way. Or, he may kick around in the minors for a few years after getting DFA’ed and eventually put it all together as a minor league vet. But barring one of those two scenarios, the goal of developing this guy into a real hitter has simply been set aside for the foreseeable future.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
by Jay on Mar 26, 2009 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I hear you, but I think of Graf and Carroll as true utility players – guys that are limited by talent rather than experience, and had fairly regular playing time in the majors until they hit a certain age, but by that time know the pitchers and situations and can put up a decent at bat when called upon.
Not trying to argue, just think Barfield is in a pretty unusual situation, not experienced enuf to know what he’s doing, yet put in the role of someone who does. If he does earn a reputation, he’ll have to learn the hard way.

I’m surprised Shapiro and Antonetti were so unguarded with their comments while sitting around fans who could overhear their conversations and post them on a blog or something. Heh. I guess I’m surprised they don’t have special seats of their own where they have more privacy.
Great post. Are you sure you can’t stay though the end of Spring Training???
