Indians won't negotiate extension for Lee this season
Lee said that the Indians declined to make an offer now because of economic conditions, and Lee's agent said that negotiations won't happen during the season so that they don't become a distraction for his client. Whatever the reason, the Indians aren't taking advantage of the best point in a player's contract to get an extension done, and now it is very likely that Lee tests free agency after the 2010 season.

Cliff is on the wrong side of 30.
((Hope we can flip him for picks next year!!))

After we win the World Series this year, I am okay with having a down year and trading Lee and Victor at mid-season.

i’m not jumping on this trade victor boat. at all. or anytime in the near future.
at the risk of sounding trite, he really is the heart and soul of the team. if we’re fat at catcher, why jettison him? he can move to 1B which is less valuable, but not necessarily not needed. i think he has (more trite commin’) intangibles that can coddle a fausto and bring along a santana. you get the sense the guy would stick around on the relative cheap, too with the way it’s been said how much he loves being part of the indians.
Victor is by far my favorite player on the team, but let’s be honest here, what is his market value after next year (assuming he puts up consecutive decent seasons)? 4/45? 3/36? Possibly a 5 year deal? At some point we have to let these guys go if we are going to sign Grady, Fausto, etc.
It’s not like we are thin at 1b either (Mills, Hodges and possibly LaPorta).

The day Victor suits up for another team will be a very sad day in my life.
So 2009.

1. i’m betting we can keep him for less than market value, whatever it is.
2. carmona is under team control through 2014. 14!
4. i don’t think you have to choose between grady or victor.
5. i’m arguing victor is not just one of “these guys” whereas a shoppach is.

Just block-quoting this out of context, move along.

Agree. Don’t buy high (and old).
Also, if we could get Carlos Santana for a Casey Blake rental, a consistently good Lee would net a huge return.
Carmona for Cy Young 2009
Yeah, comming off a Cy-Young year is probably not the best time to be negotiating a long term deal from the Tribe’s perspective. Not that Lee is not a very good pitcher, but I don’t think we’ll see numbers quite like ’08 again.
They can make the “sign to long term deal/trade for prospects/keep and get the draft pick compensation” decision this offseason. What’s important now is he’s our #1 starter and he’s going to be mowing down Rangers in Arlington in 10 days.
I’ve only heard 2 relevant items – one, during a broadcast, a Tribe announcer said his latest throwing session was better than his first. The second, from Castro, Miller himself saying he feels pretty good.
Anybody other scuttlebutt?
If his velocity is fine, pain absent, and making adjustments to control issues after just one session, I don’t see how they can recommend surgery. But hey, that’s just me – the surgeon may think different.
Is this really news, I mean, to this community? We were never seriously considering giving him an extension.
It would have had to have been a serious sweetheart deal for the Indians to buy high on a guy his age and with his injury history.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
I know that he is a pitcher. I know that he is 30. But does he really have any significant injury history besides the pulled muscle in his side 2 years ago?? I could be forgetting something, but glancing at his baseball cube page, it doesn’t seem like he has missed much time in his career.

Does Hoynes think before he writes? (No a serious question, we all know he doesn’t).
Cleveland is filled with doom and gloom fans. Hoynes should know by now that writing an article saying the Indians will not extend Cliff Lee, who to some Cleveland fans is now Sandy Koufax after an almost unheard of Cy Young season will likely result in bloodshed if then entire Dolan family.
Look at some of the fans replies. Several times I read the likes of “I’m glad I no longer am emotionally invested in this team” and “thanks for the memories Cliff!!!” Only to be countered very rarely by a rational and obviously educated baseball fan pointing out that he’s still here for the next 2 years and that the Indians have no reason to rush out and buy high and end up likely having to sell extremely low.
Really, I try not to get angry. I just really believe the Paul Hoynes’s followers are about as bumbling as he is himself.
It’s okay, man — you’re in a safe place now. You don’t ever have to read those comments again.
I can’t blame Hoynes for reporting it — it is actual news. I don’t love the lead, which, instead of stating the story plainly, puts the story directly in Cleveland sports soap-opera terms. But I don’t know if that context can be avoided.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
I’m not sure I get the criticism … does this qualify as news or not? And why should Hoynes concern himself with the commentary on Cleveland.com?
Frankly, I don't contribute much.
it’s news. the tone of the delivery is up to hoynes. and that delivery reaches all readers, not just the ones that post on cle.com. i roll my eyes when i read it because i know it just fuels that flame. it smacks of shameless rabble rousing from a professional writer.
It’s amazing how much less people look like noobs when they avoid the subject line.
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
It is kind of crazy — don’t you find that you’re willing to cut a guy all kinds of slack if he just demonstrates that little bit of paying attention? It’s not that easy to avoid the subject line if you’ve never posted before.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
yeah.
I still have trouble with it.
