Decsion Day for Miller
"Adam Miller will throw a bullpen session Friday. It will be his third bullpen since being cleared to throw with decreased range of motion and strength in his right middle finger, and it will be his last bullpen before the Indians decide whether to let Miller pitch with the problem or to have him undergo season-ending surgery. Head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff will update the media on the situation, but that update might not come until Saturday. We shall see. For what it's worth, Miller is telling people that he feels pretty good."
UPDATE: Castrovince is now reporting that the Indians now believe Miller may not need surgery. Apparently he is feeling no pain or discomfort, and he's gained significant command incrementally across multiple throwing sessions. [Jay]

Don’t we have someone on location in Goodyear?? Next year, we’re organizing this thing so we have full coverage.
Seriously. My boss and I had talked a few weeks ago about driving down there this weekend, but it fell through. Which is unfortunate because now we’re buried under about two feet of snow here in the Springs. You get a snowday up in Denver, Cambridge?
Il faut d'abord durer.
Partial news from castro
…but it sounds like he’s going to continue to stay the course and pitch with decreased range of motion and strength in his right middle finger, rather than undergo season-ending (and career-threatening) surgery.
If this all works out for him Miller is definitely going to be in need of a new nickname. My first vote would be for ‘Tipsy Miller’
This raises a question. Maybe you can pitch without a middle finger, but how can you drive?

Unless, of course, it takes some break off his fastball and flattens his slider, in which case he’ll actually become Jason Davis.
Sigh.
That said, I agree. OTs and PTs can work miracles. As long as he’s throwing, there’s a chance, but I was pretty well convinced that if he got his finger re-strung, it was all over.

he’s now pushing the ball off his right index finger, whereas he used to push off the middle finger
Interesting. Maybe they can teach him a forkball.

Hello everyone,
It’s nice to hear that MIller will still be pitching – even if he’s only 75% to 80% of his potential, that’s still better than having 0% chance of reaching 100% of his potential. Of course, if he can consistently show his former self using this new “delivery,” that’s all the better.
Let’s just hope he can stay healthy and contribute to the Indians in 2009 and beyond – he would seem due for some luck and breaks to go his (and the Indians’) way. :-)
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
