Anyone else watching the Netherlands hold down the Dominicans? Am I the only one who cares?

by NickFantana on Mar 7, 2009 1:50 PM EST reply actions

I am. I just read the play-by-play for the first inning and wish i could have seen it.

I refuse to ever root for a team that routinely does the MVP chant for opposing players.

by TheVanillaGorilla on Mar 7, 2009 1:55 PM EST up reply actions

Wow the Netherlands just won.

by cclemens31 on Mar 7, 2009 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

Wedge is drooling over that guy.

I refuse to ever root for a team that routinely does the MVP chant for opposing players.

by TheVanillaGorilla on Mar 7, 2009 1:58 PM EST reply actions

You don’t see that happen too often. I wonder if part of it is that Fernando Tatis is a little rotund these days.

by NickFantana on Mar 7, 2009 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

Or maybe just not expecting some guy to dive into his legs out of nowhere. He was looking a bit portly though.

I refuse to ever root for a team that routinely does the MVP chant for opposing players.

by TheVanillaGorilla on Mar 7, 2009 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

Did you happen to see who this pitcher is?

by NickFantana on Mar 7, 2009 2:06 PM EST reply actions

Oil Can Boyd looks like.

I refuse to ever root for a team that routinely does the MVP chant for opposing players.

by TheVanillaGorilla on Mar 7, 2009 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

Hm, that was fun. And now I turn over to see that Canada is already on the board….Goodness.

by NickFantana on Mar 7, 2009 2:13 PM EST reply actions

Now watching US – Canada. Runner scores on botched double play attempt. 1-nil Canada.

by woodsmeister on Mar 7, 2009 2:13 PM EST reply actions

This Candian team is way better than I thought. I didn’t realize Votto or Martin were Canadian.

by afh4 on Mar 7, 2009 2:14 PM EST reply actions

I think I knew about Martin. But Votto – huh.

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

by westbrook on Mar 7, 2009 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

I feel like we have the toughest pool. As far as there being three teams that have a good chance of advancing.

I refuse to ever root for a team that routinely does the MVP chant for opposing players.

by TheVanillaGorilla on Mar 7, 2009 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

I mean, the Netherlands may not score another run in this tournament but they managed to scratch one out against the Dominicans. Pretty cool.

by NickFantana on Mar 7, 2009 2:15 PM EST reply actions

The bad news – Peavy walks the bases full. The good news – Mark Teahen up to bat.

by woodsmeister on Mar 7, 2009 2:18 PM EST reply actions

You hit the nail on the head.

by cclemens31 on Mar 7, 2009 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

I have mixed emotions about being put in a position to root for both Pedroia and Jeter.

by woodsmeister on Mar 7, 2009 2:21 PM EST reply actions

I’m rooting for Canada and Korea.

by afh4 on Mar 7, 2009 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

I can’t turn off my Americanness.

by woodsmeister on Mar 7, 2009 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

You could argue that WBC Team USA isn’t any more American than American Idol is. Do you feel compelled to root for that, too?

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Mar 7, 2009 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

I guess I’m just rooting for the laundry on this one.

by woodsmeister on Mar 7, 2009 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

As an Indians fan, rooting for Korea makes a lot of sense. Is it because of Weglarz you’re rooting for Canada?

by NickFantana on Mar 7, 2009 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

he’s a big stubby clap fan.

by Brick. on Mar 7, 2009 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

Wegz. And Canada has likable players.

by afh4 on Mar 7, 2009 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely Korea for me.
But yeah, it’s almost impossible to root for Jeter and Pedroia.
This must be how, say, an Arsenal fan feels when he sees a thug/brat like Wayne Rooney suit up for England.

by still ill on Mar 7, 2009 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

i would say … UNpoSSIBLE!

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Mar 7, 2009 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

Inconceivable, even?
On second thought, let’s not…

by still ill on Mar 7, 2009 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

Cheering for Rooney is simple (and frankly quite enjoyable) compared to the vomit inducing thought of having to applaud Jeter or Pedroia. I’m cheering for Indians players to not get hurt and for this giant ESPN income boost to end so we can get to real baseball.

by Brad D on Mar 8, 2009 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions

3 easy groundouts for Peavy in the 2nd.

by woodsmeister on Mar 7, 2009 2:35 PM EST reply actions

lol at the DR

There is a significant lack of beards in this year's clubhouse...

by mixmasterasia on Mar 7, 2009 2:38 PM EST reply actions

FWIW, Pedro domninated some Netherlandians.

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

Sutcliffe credits Jeter for McCann’s sac fly.

by ClarkM on Mar 7, 2009 2:47 PM EST reply actions

Randomness

Think we can get a new ‘Featured Poll’ over there on the right?

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

by westbrook on Mar 7, 2009 2:49 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, maybe something a bit more forward thinking. That thing is depressing me.

Joey Votto goes second deck. 2-1 Canada.

Wow.

I refuse to ever root for a team that routinely does the MVP chant for opposing players.

by TheVanillaGorilla on Mar 7, 2009 2:53 PM EST reply actions

Wegz with the walk. I was hoping for fireworks.

by still ill on Mar 7, 2009 3:09 PM EST reply actions

Hey, the game must be getting serious, ’cause the US put their first-string shortstop in.

by still ill on Mar 7, 2009 3:35 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Suttcliffe speculating that Jeter is injured because the original plan was for Jeter to play all nine today.

by NickFantana on Mar 7, 2009 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

Starting to love the WBC…

by still ill on Mar 7, 2009 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

I very much wish we had been able to sign Adam Dunn.

by NickFantana on Mar 7, 2009 3:54 PM EST reply actions

Pigeons?!? Did anyone else just see those pigeons behind home plate? Do they live in the SkyDome?

by woodsmeister on Mar 7, 2009 3:55 PM EST reply actions

Wegz walks.

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

Fly ball to right, USA! USA! USA! USA!

Don't be stupid. PUT IN MELOAN.

by gte619n on Mar 7, 2009 5:04 PM EST reply actions

So here’s how dumb I am.

I switch on the MLB Network, they’re showing some spring training game — Kouzmanoff was up, so it must have been the Padres.

And I think to myself: Huh, I guess they’re not televising the WBC game. Weird.

So I queue up Hammy on Gameday Audio and promptly fall asleep.

All in all, a great couple of hours, but man … I am dumb.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Mar 7, 2009 5:37 PM EST reply actions

I’d tell you that Sidney Ponson dominated the Dominican Team, but you’d hardly believe me.

Don't be stupid. PUT IN MELOAN.

by gte619n on Mar 7, 2009 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t really care what happened, that’s part of the beauty of it.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Mar 7, 2009 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

Man that was an incredible game to be at. Caught a foul ball which was a first for me, and earned a few claw marks for my trouble…also needed first aid which was also a first.

As for the game, everyone was in agreement that the Skydome/Rogers Centre hasn’t been that loud for a baseball game since 1993. Can’t believe that the Canadian pitching staff got themselves out of those jams (Who the hell is Aumont?), and it was nice to see some pop from guys like Votto and Martin. And how about that eye on our boy Wegz!! Even though I’m pretty sure no one else in the place knew who he was.

All in all, a fun afternoon, and hopefully Tuesday’s game can measure up.

We’ll get you next time, America. Next time…

Aumont is a pretty good prospect. He was a first round pick in 2007 and Kevin Goldstein ranked him as the #2 prospect in the Mariners system.

by ClarkM on Mar 8, 2009 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not at all qualified to comment, but his pitches looked really nasty on TV.

Here’s hoping we can steal him from the Mariners for a washed-up platoon first baseman at some point.

by still ill on Mar 8, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah we had a nice little chuckle during the game that he would eventually belong to the Indians.

by supermarioelia on Mar 8, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Nice job on the foul ball! Looked like a fun crowd.

So is Canada playing the part of Dr. Claw above? Or is Canada Inspector Gadget, and the US is Claw? Of course, any serious analysis of the situation would reveal that Canda is Penny.

by dgcambridge on Mar 8, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I was watching for you, truly. And I wore my Canada shirt yesterday. It now smells like cigarettes and beer.

So 2009.

by Gradyforpresident on Mar 8, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

And covered with maple syrup I hope.
