Meh, they’re not going to contend and they’ll probably have young guys in all the other spots. If any team can afford a nostalgia signing, it’s probably them.

Unfortunately, Gameday is really erratic today. It’ll be three batters behind the audio, then throw out the results for all three in about 2 seconds.

by FredOx on Apr 1, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, if anyone can provide PBP, I’d appreciate it. I only have Gameday.

by Voltaire on Apr 1, 2009 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

It seems odd that mlb isn’t posting the links to all the gameday feeds. Why have them active and not made available unless clever users twiddle with the URL…?

by JimmyAB on Apr 1, 2009 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably because it’s clear that like everyone else, Gameday is in ST mode. Erratic updates, no pitch-by-pitch, etc.

Isn’t that how Gameday always performs…

by Voltaire on Apr 1, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

It makes me crazy when nothing happens for minutes on end and then suddenly catches up in one refresh. Or at the end of an inning, fails to update what has happened. When it does work though, it is a decent way to follow a game if you can’t watch or listen.

He was discussed ‘round here on the thread about the Mariners choosing Gutz. But yeah, he is what he is – he’s affordable, he’s got the starting job, he’s not a cornerstone. He’s a Well-Received Placeholder.

Warning: Long and boring vent ahead

I had checked in for a flight tomorrow morning, and prepaid the $15 bag check fee (which is obnoxious all by itself, but that’s another story)… I prepaid because I have to take a shuttle to Phoenix tomorrow and it’s going to be relatively tight, so I didn’t want to have to wait in an extra line at the airport. Anyway, turns out I fit everything I need in a carry-on, so I called customer support to cancel the bag reservation. Once I eventually got hold of a person (when several menus took me in a loop), I was initially told the fee was nonrefundable, so I asked to talk to a supervisor. When the “supervisor” (who sounded identical as far as I could tell) came on, he told me he’d have to call someone or other and put me on hold again. While being transferred I got disconnected. I called back, and explained again, and they told me they had to transfer me to the “online help desk”. Once I got there (after more hold music), I was told that I needed to call the refunds department… except they were closed by now, and wouldn’t be open again until well after it would do me any good. After a few other dodges, he eventually put me on hold again, and came back and said “as a one time exception” he would refund my fee (this after telling me there was physically nothing he could do from where he was).

So eventually I got my frickin’ $15 back (supposedly — we’ll see if my credit card statement shows the refund), but if I had a real job, the time I spent doing it would be worth more than the fee. It’s seriously like Soviet Russia. Except much of it is in India.

Hafner up and in a 2-0 count. Big hack, fouls it back. Takes a pitch, 3-1. Swinging strike. Full count. Hafner strikes out swinging.

Ok. Matt Herges in pitching. Gets a strikeout to start it off.

Lopez up. Broken bat foul, bat head into the seats nobody hurt as evidenced by the applause. Line drive base hit.

Full count on guy batting. Ball four. Runners 1st and 2nd. 1 out.

by JimmyAB on Apr 1, 2009 7:17 PM EDT reply actions

Herges getting his fastball up there at around 84 mph, strikes out whoever was just batting.

by JimmyAB on Apr 1, 2009 7:18 PM EDT reply actions

After all this it seems it’s possible San Diego will win this game

by Logodaedalus on Apr 1, 2009 7:19 PM EDT reply actions

That would be an amazing feat, esp since we’re playing the Mariners

Tribe in '09!!

Hammy misspoke.

Yeah, okay, it wasn’t really funny.

Johnson up and desperately wants to send the home team fans away happy. 2-2 count. Jam shot to Peralta. Ball Game!

by JimmyAB on Apr 1, 2009 7:23 PM EDT reply actions

wait a minute… if you read the score backwards and insert slashes it’s 4/1 4/1….

By golly I think this game was fake!

I preface this by saying I don’t really follow a lot of spring training ball, but these games in Arizona seem ridiculous. Tons of balls lost in the sky, crazy wind blown homers and then the usual gaffes and errors that happen from players playing in odd positions. It just makes for lazy, clunky baseball that doesn’t seem to really give you a value on what anyone is really capable of.

I was actually going to make this rant last week, but today just kind of brought it all back to me. Let’s play some real baseball.

Not to mention that it’s been roughly the longest spring training ever. Pitchers and catchers reported almost 6 weeks ago. Ugh. I was so excited when that happened, then excited again when exhibition games started, but now I just don’t really care any more.

DISCLAIMER: I may be bitter.

I really can’t wait until these are real game threads.

by lenred on Apr 1, 2009 9:03 PM EDT reply actions

Completely OT. But I just got R.E.M.‘s 1985 Rockpalast performance, and during “Hyena” the backing vocals actually sound like hyena cries, unlike the studio version, where they just sound like…backing vocals. It may not sound as good but at last it’s accurate.
